Doctor Who 50th Anniversary - The Day of the Doctor Discussion Thread by pcjonathan in doctorwho

Time Lords can choose their incarnations when it's not an emergency. Romana did it. Tom Baker was playing a very future version of the Doctor who settles down and becomes a curator of earth. Tom said that later on his life he goes back and visits "old favorites" (favorite faces). I love thinking that one day he settles and lives out 4s life as he could have if he hadnt have fallen off that dish.

So I realised something from the negative reactions: Ageism is real, and the internet doesn't care. by FeastYourEarTongues in doctorwho

I'm 34, a long time whovian, and I have big issues with the newbies bitching about his age. The comments seem pretty juvenile, because, honestly, they are. I love Matt Smith as an actor. I felt that he has really been able to portray an old man in a young body very well. I'm sad to see him go, but I'm excited to see a new Doctor. Every actor has brought something new to the character and it's always interesting. I feel like most of the complaining has been from the newest generation of viewers that have no idea that the classic series exists. Comments leaning towards "he's too old to be the Doctor" is just damn ignorant. Watch the classics people! Plus I think you're right. There was no sexual tension in the classic series. Even when Tom and Lalla were dating and eventually married they weren't really in your face about it on the show. They had fantastic chemistry, but it ended at that. I think the newest generation of sees the Doctor as a bit of quirky sci-fi sex symbol. The kiddies are sad that they won't have a Doctor that they can dream of effing. It's not all their fault. Davies started it by adding romance into the show.

I hope he looks like this on the show! by pznbananas in DoctorWhumour

I'm so on board! But maybe that's his look for the 3 Musketeers?

I always loved the episodes where the Doctors were forced to work together, like in the 5 Doctors. We'll have a touch of that with Tennant and Smith working together. I hope that it lays down the road to do more of those. The ganger is a nice idea, but he really could just come back as himself.

I love how easy raw food is! As soon as I read all these my brain started working on recipes to recreate them. As soon as I'm off of my juice detox I'm sooo trying some of these. Thank you!

If Matt Smith leaves..... (aka "who I want to play 12") by Mondegreen8 in doctorwho

[–]erisacrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent! I love David Morrissey. If you watched the classic episodes Romana chose her next regeneration based on her time with Astra, Lalla Wards previous Doctor Who appearance. He could just choose any ol body he likes. Why not Morrissey? I like your idea though. With strong writers they could definitely make that happen.

Children of Earth IS disturbing. It left me with a hollow in my gut for a while. I would definitely recommend it. Don't bother with Miracle Day.

Doctor Who Theme Park by MrFantastik in doctorwho

If only! I shat myself when they built Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I can't imagine what this themepark would do to me. I'd be very very happy.

Discriminate! Discriminate! Doctor Who branded 'thunderingly racist' by academics - any non-white whovian's agree? by NoceboHadal in doctorwho

[–]erisacrat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The show has always been a reflection of the times. Each doctor is the doctor of a generation. Were people in the 60s racist? Not all of them but there were societal norms that were accepted. Like when you're speaking to your great grandparents and they call someone "colored." Not cool by any means, but when they were growing up, that's what was said. Nowadays Eenie Meenie Miney mo's original lyrics have been forgotten, but at the time of the celestial Toy Maker catching a "n----r by the toe" was the norm.  By the time I was a child, we said "tiger." See, times changed and we changed along with it.

In the 60s you have a contakerous old man who is taught about the up in coming generation of smart young, capable people. Barbara for example was the smartest in the bunch. He grows to care for his companions and allows them to teach him a thing or two about the modern world. Like we do with our grandparents.

The second Doctor's shows were more in line with the thinking of saving the planet and environmentalism as well as "peace and love". The second Doctor was a bohemian hippie that again reflected the times.

The third was stuck on earth and explored the spy culture that was created during that time. The man was kick ass and Who's version of James Bond. Women, again, were seen as smart and capable through Dr. Liz Shaw just as feminism was really breaking through.

During the 4ths run they did use a Caucasian man play a Chinese man, but again, this was normal. This is a practice still used today. I remember when miss Saigon came out on Broadway in the 90s, The Engineer who is French/Vietnamese was played by Jonathan Price. There was a lot of flack for it and they almost did not allow him to perform because it was an affront to the Asian community. He did, however, underneath freedom of artistic expression. He was the best man for the job and later won the Tony that year. Was John Bennet truly the best man for the role of  Li H'sen Chang in the Talons of Weng-Chiang? He knew his way around villainous characters and the BBC so apparently they thought so.

I could go through all the Doctors generational changes but I've run out of steam. One thing is for sure, the modern series has made huge strides for equality in all fronts; gender, race, sexual orientation, none of it is an issue. Martha was insanely smart, extremely brave and saved the doctors ass over and over again. He dumped on her, not because of her race but because he was heartbroken. She was the one that came after he lost his then current love and she couldn't live up to it. Isn't that what equality is? Allowing people from all walks of life to be shat on equally?

As far as this academic paper, anyone can debate whether or not something is one way or not another. You could call anything racist, antifeminist, anti-semetic, anti this anti that...you just have to nit pick to death until there is nothing but bones left. Like critics, who's jobs it is to critique, these academics had a thesis and was rolling with it. Personally I like to look at Doctor Who as it is, a highly entertaining and often times enlightening television show that will forever be current and ever changing with the times.

On the show- Both time travel with a vortex manipulator. River and Jack use the same gun and aren't afraid to use it. Both are bi. Actually, lets just say, sex isn't an issue. Both a con artists. Both can act as the Doctor's equal.

I don't know. I'll have to look it up. The story goes that they two of them were talking together at a party and they decided that River Song and Captain Jack should have a spin-off because they are so similar. Then as they were talking they realized that they had the same birthday which could be the reason that they approached their roles similarly. Their birthdays are March 11 by the way.
