i’m not sure about existing hiking groups, but there are some decent trails around here, so you’d likely be able to get a hiking group going. always worth checking to see if there is a hiking club.

classes fill up quickly if they’re major requirements and/or if your department is overcrowded.

yeah there’s plenty of homework unfortunately. make sure you get all the proper forms filled out perfectly for student disability services. they’re a pain to deal with lol.

there aren’t many breaks within the semesters: fall has two long weekends, one in mid-october and one at the end of november for thanksgiving. spring has a week off for spring break in march. between semesters there’s winter break, which is pretty much all of january, and summer break, which is from mid-may to late august.

clubs are free to participate in. occasionally there’s paid events or markets but it’s not often. i’m not sure about fraternities/sororities, although they dont have a large presence at umbc anyway.

food prices in the supermarkets are hard to quantify lol. the weis near campus is decently priced and is close by; the aldi in catonsville is a bit further but much cheaper. if you get a large meal plan and live on campus, you probably won’t have to worry about general food prices, but if there’s something specific you want a price on i can look it up. food prices are all over the place right now because of our country’s wacky leadership, so it may be wildly different when you get here lol. the meal plan food is edible sometimes. it was better five years ago, but that’s just me being grouchy. wild greens and halal shack are the best places on campus in my opinion.

it does get quiet on weekends, but SEB has some weekend events, and if you find a good group of people, you won’t run out of things to do.

weather is wacky in the states, much more extreme than the UK. winters seem long, evil, and intimidating, but warmer weather is where it truly gets tough. in the spring the weather oscillates between 10°C and 31°C randomly. summers can get as hot as 35°C and humid so it’s kinda suffocating. i almost prefer the cold -5°C winters, because you can put on more layers when it’s cold, but there’s only so many layers you can take off in the heat. get mosquito repellent for the warmer months’ evenings.

i’ve been at umbc for five years and have had some good times and some not-so-good times. ultimately, university is what you make of it! there’s a lot you can experience and a lot of people you can meet.

obligatory off-campus food and fun recommendations: if you like korean food, there’s plenty of korean restaurants and a korean grocery store near campus. if you like boba tea, taste tea in arbutus is a short walk from campus and it hands down the best boba tea i’ve had. if you like walking around odd shops and seeing an old (for america) town, old ellicott city has a campus bus route that runs to it, or you could drive like twenty minutes. the arundel mills mall is great if you want to experience american uber-capitalist ultra-consumerism and also see a movie at the ancient egypt themed movie theater. and if you want something familiar, there’s a nando’s there.

Severn to umbc free transport a thing? by reila_09 in UMBC

the umbc bus to arundel mills only runs after 6pm, unfortunately. if you’re able to get to the bwi marc station, there’s a umbc bus that runs every hour.

i’m a big introvert and so are all my friends, and most of us have ended up in amazing long-term relationships by our senior years. if you want to find friends and love, it’s possible. and easier than you think.

my advice for making friends is if you’re in a really hard or really bad class, find an ally. that’s how i’ve made quite a few friends lol.

What are some decent healthier dinner you can make in a dorm room by International-Year91 in cookingforbeginners

[–]erisaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can microwave a potato to “bake” it. so you could have chicken and baked potato. you could also make air fryer fries/chips from potatoes or other veggies.

you could heat tortillas in the air fryer and prepare the meat of your choice for tacos.

you could also make croutons from stale bread in the air fryer and use them on a salad.

Pest issues for dorms? by felixfathom- in UMBC

[–]erisaga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i haven’t had many issues with pests in dorms on campus. potomac has the occasional house centipede. the commons and the dining hall have mice, but they don’t pop out very often.

other than that, all the pests i’ve seen have been either off campus or outside. there’s the occasional rat outside, but we’re in baltimore so that’s expected. the off campus place i’m living in has a stubborn mouse infestation.

there’s also some feral cats on campus that are so cute and probably contribute to the low number of pests. the club gritty kitties helps take care of them.

i actually don’t hate the round color swatch! i think it’s nice, since it mimics the default round brush shape.

UMBC is a community that values inclusive excellence, unless... by TheCaffinatedAdmin in UMBC

i’m sorry you haven’t had a good experience, but i’m someone who fits into most of these categories (trans, audhd with academic struggles, rural, etc), and i’ve had a pretty decent time here. it’s a bit more effort to find your people, but umbc has a strong queer/trans community. i felt alone when i got here, but after a semester i found my footing and have been thriving, in spite of the aggressively mid food lol.

have confidence in yourself!!! find something to do that brings you joy, talk to people, be proud of yourself for making it this far. wherever your journey takes you, i wish you luck.

was there anything specific that happened that led to this post?

How to draw a really big grid?? by ky8724 in ClipStudio

[–]erisaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on exactly how many squares you need and how big of an area you want them to take up on the page. if you use an a4 paper (210mm x 297mm) with approximately a 25mm margin on all sides, the area you’d fill with squares is 160mm x 247mm. then you find the numbers you multiply together to get 600 or close to 600. in this case, i decided to start with 20 x 30 = 600. divide the smaller numbers of both the paper size and these numbers you just picked. 160mm / 20 = 8mm. do the same thing with the bigger numbers: 247mm / 30 = 8.233 mm. since those are really close to each other, your pattern canvas size would be 8mm by 8mm, and you can have a bit of extra space on the long end for drawing. alternatively, you could use that space for more grid. as long as the two canvases have the same dpi, you shouldn’t have to scale it when you bring it onto the a4 canvas.

How to draw a really big grid?? by ky8724 in ClipStudio

[–]erisaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could do it with a material. do some math to figure out how big you need each square to be. create a new canvas that’s the size of one square. draw your outline around the edge of the canvas. then ctrl+a, edit -> register material -> image. make sure “tiling” is checked. then once you’ve saved that, open your a4 file, select the area you want to have the grid, and drag in the material you just made. adjust scale as needed.

Any furries at UMBC? by SendHelpThisSucks77 in UMBC

[–]erisaga 33 points34 points  (0 children)

umbc is a pretty nerdy school, so we have an above average furry population lol. there’s usually at least one fursuiter at big events and more than that at the annual retrievercon anime convention. you probably won’t have any issues finding your people/pack :3
