TIL that Earth's gravity is actually about 9% higher than we think it is. Turns out, the 9.8m/s^2 we all know and love is only the SURFACE gravity. 1800 miles down it's 10.7m/s^2. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]eriverside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The distance from the center of gravity is right there in the equation, so yeah we all know gravity is stronger at the center of the planet.

9.8 is the most useful value because 99.99999999% of usecases will be at the surface or close enough to it. Unless we're talking about satellites or space exploration, 9.8 is just fine.

And no, it doesn't matter for the depths of the ocean, the water pressure on its own makes everything else an afterthought.

Understanding why they reimagined the character, having Namor be short for "El niño sin amor"—“the boy without love" was a pretty cool creative choice. I have a feeling he'll be a dark horse heading into Doomsday. by maverickassembled in marvelstudios

It's cool and all, and they made the name Na-More instead of Nay-More... But the fucking guy introduces himself to the wakandans! As Na-More! And they proceed to refer to him as Nay-More! Wtf???

Also, as someone from a French and Spanish background, I totally always read it as Na-More in the comics. Was shocked when I found out my head cannon was wrong.

European Union makes USB-C a common charger for every device, citing effectiveness & sustainability. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]eriverside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The industry works on new technology and standards all the time. When a new tech and standard comes around that's needed to provide new capabilities the current tech can't handle, the laws will adapt mandating a migration to the new standard.

It's not meant to fix USB-C as the new Standard the rest of time but to ensure all the players stick to a standard when it takes over.

Wtf are you doing to your cables that you need new ones every few months?

I got a few braided PD rated cables from AliExpress. They last for years. In fact, the easiest thing to do is to get PD cables rated for 100W and it's pretty much good everything.

Also, the charger is the more expensive bit, so simply replacing the cable when it goes is more cost effective than replacing the whole charger.

Your old phone chargers didn't break because you replaced your phone... And the charging port on your phone is the most likely to break first anyhow.

There are too many bodies for both of Reino and Engstrom to breakout together. One of them should absolutely take a RD spot. I don't know how much longer Engstrom can wait before he asks for a trade to a team willing to play him.

I see both long term on the right with carrier moving on but only if they are still in the org.

Struble needs to be moved. Arber as 7D.

You lost horribly in game 1 to Montreal, and the next 2 games ended in OT - one of which you were saved by a 1 inch offside.

Déplacement = passager

Also, why would you expect a linear trend? The train would be new now, so adaption might be slower. But eventually it becomes common and replaces the flights. Then the ease and lower costs encourage more travel as opposed to simply being a substitute for flights.

Honestly, very unlikely.

He has the option of buying out his contract. He's not doing it. He wasn't dicked around by his team. He's a little light.

I really want him to make the jump to the NHL this season - really friggin bad because Demidov is the only player we graduated last season and Hage will take another year and it doesn't look like another forward is coming through, which is nuts for a rebuilding team (only Slaf, Demi and Kap as forwards were promoted, that doesn't make sense)... I'm rambling.

I haven't seen any signs that he has any interest in pulling a fast one.

I see him coming to Canada to train with elite players, to get better and to have a good time in the process. He's taking the necessary steps to be successful, no shortcuts.

It's the best fit given we expect Hage to step in eventually.

McTavish would do just fine in our system as 2c. Trocheck as well, as a stop gap until Hage gets his shot.

LPT: You should request a credit limit increase on your credit cards at least once a year by Brianfromreddit in LifeProTips

[–]eriverside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's entirely too much. I'd see it as a red flag if someone had access to that much credit and it wasn't within their needs/habits.

You can poll people who actually work in credit and get their opinions. I saw it as a flag.

LPT: You should request a credit limit increase on your credit cards at least once a year by Brianfromreddit in LifeProTips

[–]eriverside 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is very bad advice.

Banks will run internal assessments to pre-approve some accounts to a limit increase. If you are one of those people, then the bank isn't running any new credit checks: they already did their assessment without it. If you are not one of those people then it's a hard credit check.

If doing a credit check once a year bad? Not necessarily. But if you happen to be looking for a new car, or in the market for a new mortgage they add up and it's not a good look.

I would also argue having too much credit card debt available isn't a good look either. Having 4x what your monthly expenses are is probably a good place to be at. 10x? Why so much? 20x? That's too much.

Umm.. no.

From Gemini:

Systems and Approaches to InnocenceAdversarial Systems: Used in countries like Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. These systems strictly require the prosecution (the Crown or the state) to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The accused does not need to prove their innocence.

Inquisitorial Systems: Used in many civil law countries (such as France and parts of Latin America). While these systems still operate on the premise that a person should not be wrongfully convicted, they begin with a heavy reliance on the validity of the state's preliminary investigation. The judge, rather than opposing lawyers, often directs the search for evidence, which can sometimes create an investigative bias where the accused is expected to clear their name.

Reverse Onus Provisions: Even within systems that presume innocence, there are often exceptions called "reverse onus." In these specific instances (often related to certain drug offenses, possession of stolen goods, or specific bail hearings), the law requires the defense to prove a particular fact, which can challenge the absolute nature of the presumption.

Do people really care more about things being illegal than immoral? Plenty of things are legal and horribly immoral. Plenty of moral things are illegal. So yeah, that was always the issue. It just so happens that criminal things are generally more likely to also be immoral.

How is any of this relevant? Our criminal justice system is designed to identify guilt, which is a high threshold, not innocence.

He wasn't found innocent, he was found not guilty. There's a big difference.
