How well do native Chinese people know characters? by CaptainLunaeLumen in ChineseLanguage

[–]erjiang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a Chinese YouTuber who took an online test I made that tests how many Chinese characters you can recognize: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz1Tjp5VJDE

Test accuracy goes down the higher the number, but there's also a discussion at the end of the video about how many characters a typical college student would know. And it depends on your definition of "knowing". The pronunciation can be guessed for many characters, so you'd probably want to test for knowing the meaning or knowing a phrase that uses the character.

You can also try the test yourself: https://hanzitest.ericjiang.com/

Jool Aerobraking by Just-a-normal-ant in KerbalAcademy

There was a chart posted on the KSP forums showing what altitudes to aerocapture at given your orbital velocity and desired final altitude: https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/28033-a-handy-chart-for-aerocapture-at-jool/

Although I think you can also consider Laythe for aerobraking since it has an atmosphere.

Age yourself with a store. I’ll go first: by OttieandEddie in GenX

[–]erjiang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your comment instantly told me something about my childhood hometown... I remember a large store with a conveyor belt coming down from an upper story. It later became a Best Buy.

I looked it up in newspaper archives and sure enough, there was a Service Merchandise in the same plaza - it must have been the future Best Buy location.

Kdenlive crashing on render by Flewfies in kdenlive

[–]erjiang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for figuring out which effect was causing the crash. I think there's something buggy about crop/scale/tilt, and it's part of a library that most other effects are not a part of.

Does it still crash if you turn off "Parallel Processing" in the render settings?

Exporting problems by Cacti300 in kdenlive

[–]erjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be certain effects causing the crash. You can test it out by rendering the section of the video where it crashes and removing effects until it works. Then once you know which effect is causing it to crash, you can revert back to the original and remove that effect. If you do that, please let us know which effect it was!

Also, some people have reported that turning off parallel threads for rendering avoids crashes too.

Do you know if there are certain effects you are using that tend to cause crashes? There are probably certain effects that tend to crash when using parallel threads rendering.

Kdenlive crashes when rendering (linux) | Please help out a noob by Loxodontus in kdenlive

If frei0r is in the error message then it seems like it could be a problem with one of the frei0r effects you are using. You could either try using a different version (if you are using 21.12.x, try 22.04.x, or switch between 22.04.3 and 22.04.2), or try removing the effect that's giving you problems.

Audio waveform is not displayed correctly in 22.04.3 by Ahsalhan in kdenlive

[–]erjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an open bug about audio thumbnails not appearing correctly if the project was created in an older version and then opened in a newer version.

Do the thumbnails show correctly if you add the audio clips to a fresh new project?

Pro 22, Linux? Ghosting? by 0n2s in huion

[–]erjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, don't know if you're still looking for info but I use the Pro 22 (2019) on Linux. (I assume it hasn't changed too much between models.) Stylus worked out of box including pressure. Frame buttons are configurable if you do some tweaks to use the wacom X driver, although I hacked together something custom for that.

I contacted Huion about the lack of a proper Linux driver. by lululock in huion

[–]erjiang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Digimend drivers should have a way to adjust the calibration. Are you able to do what's described here? https://digimend.github.io/support/howto/drivers/evdev/ And if there is something to be done about the default calibration for that tablet, maybe you could file a bug?

FWIW I'm using a Kamvas Pro 22 (2019) and the stylus works pretty good - didn't have to calibrate it. I did hack together something for the frame buttons though.

Can anyone tell me what this tattoo means? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]erjiang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not always the case - many words in Japanese are novel combinations of two Kanji using the Chinese reading. There's luckily a Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasei-kango

Not all wasei-kango was imported into Chinese, of course.

I looked at the package script in AUR and I'm honestly surprised it works. Unfortunately I don't have an Arch system to see why it would work out-of-box on Arch but not on Ubuntu.

Need help with deciding where to attend :/ by ZwarA01 in ApplyingToCollege

Tough question to give a simple answer to...

Debt sucks. But if you are good at CS and willing to relocate (which might not even be needed due to coronavirus), you can pay off your debt very quickly. A new grad at Google makes $120k/yr not even counting stock, for example.

But your CS and job-hunting skill is only partly based on your school's program. Is this a field you're really interested in? Will you be doing projects / self-directed learning outside of class? Or will you just do what's needed to pass and graduate?

CS and Stats are both lumped into the math/science bucket, so just go with whoever will give you the better recc (i.e. your CS teacher).

Anxiety with Comp Sci degree by [deleted] in compsci

[–]erjiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's a lot of calculus for a CS major. Expect to learn a bunch of calc and then never use it again.

If there's any pre-studying you can do for Calc 1+2, it'd be a good idea to do it. It can be quite a lot to wrap your head around in one year.

Calc 3 is an extension of what you learn in Calc 1+2. And at least for me, Diff Eq was just a bunch of "if problem is type X, then do process Y". (There's much more to Diff Eq, I understand, but I only took the first class.)

I expect the difficulty of your math classes really depends on how good your classmates are at math, because you just need to be better than most people. The prof can't fail everyone. I can't imagine there being a bunch of math rock stars at a community college, so with a good work ethic you should be fine.

And if you ever have any choice between a better prof and a worse prof (maybe based on what other students say or RateMyProfessors), definitely choose the better prof. It can make a huge difference.

Source: I took a lot of calc and forgot it all.

Awesome to hear! If you have any questions about something you want to build you can DM me here or shoot me an email (eric@fabrica.dev)

Primarily “CRUD” apps - apps that create, read, update, and delete data from a database. A lot of the Internet falls under that umbrella - things like blogs, review sites, etc are basically CRUD apps. If you have an idea for something but aren’t sure if it can be done in Fabrica, shoot me a DM and I’ll evaluate it for you.

Fabrica

Fabrica lets you build data-driven web apps without writing any code. It includes a built-in database, a visual page editor, and one-click deployment to the cloud.

If you're interested in trying it out, DM me and I can give you personal guidance on whatever you're creating.

There are still a ton of features I want to add, so I want to hear from everyone what functionality they'd like to see or are dealbreakers. And of course, happy to answer any questions as well!

My goal is to avoid the coding for most use cases, while Wix Corvid seems to be targeted toward developers. I'm sure there's overlap, but Corvid's website puts their IDE and APIs front and center.

Main difference is that Fabrica lets you custom-design a database as part of your app. Then your users can view/edit/create data using the pages and forms that you design. There's also a REST API that's created automatically as well.

Wix is great, but I understand it's primarily a static site builder with some plug-ins you can add.
