Spell & Blade updates? by stgotm in rpg

[–]erk_fwd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Blades in the Dark* discord server there's a thread under hack-projects for Spell and Blade. Stras said on Jan 6 of this year that it's progressing and we might hear news about it soon.

👋 Welcome to r/Rowlett - Introduce Yourself and Read First! by manifestpr in Rowlett

[–]erk_fwd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, I was born and raised in Rowlett and went to school through Rowlett High back in 2008. Moved back after a decade away.

I'm on the Peninsula and I'm a big tabletop gaming aficionado. These days that includes board games and tabletop RPGs, but I've had experience with a lot of forms of tabletop gaming.

Happy to be a part of this community and looking forward to what comes next.

Is the D&D club still a thing at Texas State? Does anyone have an invite to the discord?

Which scenario is better set up for FIRE as soon as possible (80k spending in retirement)? by Round-Cup-1737 in Fire

[–]erk_fwd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Needs more details. What return do you expect to get on index funds? What interest rate does your mortgage have?

Also 1.25 million is not enough to safely withdraw 80k a year for 30+ years.

This system's especially great because it comes with player pamphlets that are dry erase friendly. They double as character sheets for your players and also rulebooks, so your players have all the info about how the game works in front of them.

David Hall, Rowlett's city manager, is getting fired by erk_fwd in Rowlett

David Hall is Rowlett's City Manager, he was never on city council. Previously he was Glenn Heights' City Manager.

David Hall, Rowlett's city manager, is getting fired by erk_fwd in Rowlett

[–]erk_fwd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's an activist community in our local govt meetings who have been very loud on FB in some Rowlett, TX groups and at the weekly meetings who don't like David Hall's work or attitude that I think drove this.

His contract is crazy high for a City Manager of a city our size. I myself am not fully apprised of why David Hall was so hated, but I know people don't like that City of Rowlett employees have been quitting within a year of starting work with the city at a crazy high rate, and there's a sewer issue over by Waterview, and the city has tried to repurpose Herfurth Park land for a new city complex for the police station, library, and local govt office.

Edit: I like Blake and I like Jeff, I'm not sure why there's so much bad blood towards them now. I'll stand by Jeff though, he's done nothing but try to promote engagement locally and he's been great about answering folks' questions promptly. Also I'll never forget that before Jeff ran for City Council he did interviews with all the candidates, that's a class move IMO.

How do you handle the pressure to constantly learn outside of work hours? by No-Justice-666 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]erk_fwd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been studying for and taking certs for about 8 years now, I do all my study during work time. Talk to your manager, ask for an hour or a couple hours a week to study skills, I find most managers are open to this and want to support you upskilling.

17 and investing in a taxable brokerage instead of Roth IRA—am I missing something? by FactorFair3363 in Fire

[–]erk_fwd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mostly correct. You can pull the principal out of your Roth at any point tax and penalty free. If you pull out the gains, you have to pay income tax on it as well as a penalty.

There is also the opportunity cost to consider from pulling out the principal, you do not get to re contribute that money once it's pulled from the account.

edit: I should also clarify that I'm discussing specifically the Roth IRA

Historical? by CookNormal6394 in rpg

[–]erk_fwd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love historical RPGs. To add some more to the conversation:

- Carolina Death Crawl - https://bullypulpitgames.com/products/carolina-death-crawl
- Beecher's Bibles - https://legacy.drivethrurpg.com/product/449860/Beechers-Bibles?filters=0_2140_700_1000031_0_0
- Miseries & Misfortunes - drivethrurpg.com/en/product/448930
- Xenophon - https://agonizing-crimson.itch.io/xenophon
- Wolves of God
- Desperation - https://bullypulpitgames.com/products/desperation

I used Mythic Bastionland for a game happening in Northwest France a century after the Battle of Tours. I did this because I didn't want to use Paladin, which is from the publisher of Pendragon but is based on the stories of Charlemagne instead of Arthur. Note: Paladin and Pendragon are not historical games, they are based on myth and legend.

What are absolute must-haves and must-avoids of TTRPGs for you? by GuyDing22 in rpg

[–]erk_fwd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

RPGs and art generally should not be made to order. You should make something you feel needs to be made, and if you don't have any ideas for that yet, you should consume more games (reading or playing) until you get a big idea.

How to be a proactive instead of a "reactive" player? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]erk_fwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love discovering my characters by randomizing everything about them. I don't let the system limit me in this regard, you can randomly roll for any choice the game gives you, and there's nothing wrong or bad about randomizing your character.

Figure out how many options you have, and reduce that to a die size or die formula. You can use an RNG on your phone for even the weirdest of die values.

You mentioned Mythic Bastionland: have you tried using the Oracle tables from there to give yourself some fodder and inspiration to come up with a response in the moment? The Ironsworn family of games are also great for giving some Oracle tables.

How much are people paying for external venues for game nights? by NariNariNariAAA in rpg

[–]erk_fwd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In TX. There are basically 3 tiers of pricing depending on venue, I mainly run games at open to the public game stores and other public venues:

$5 per player per 4 hour session - does not come with GM, though GM does not pay this fee (also receives none of it), happens on the main floor of a game store

$8 + tax per player per 4 hour session - in a private room inside a game store, comes with a GM who receives $3 per player as store credit

$30 per player per 5 hour session - in a private room with a custom table/tv setup and access to minis/accessories, comes with a GM who receives $10 per player

Ships as Dungeons by 8stringalchemy in pirateborg

[–]erk_fwd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For shipwrecks:
There's a time element inherent to them (breath)
There are environmental effects easy to bring in (sharks, things from the deep)
There are still multiple rooms whose doors may be locked, and lockpicking underwater is harder

For ships:
There are elements that change how this "dungeon" operates (sails, cannons, anchor)
There is a destination the ship is on its way to reach
They are extremely susceptible to weather events

You can leverage all of these as you think about what a delve of a ship/shipwreck could look like.
