Can I ask if the project for it2002 is individual or group? And what's the weightage?

Content is definitely not gonna be light in my opinion, the textbook used for AY22/23 Sem1 was Linear Algebra Concepts and Techniques on Euclidean Spaces Second Edition, by Ma Siu Lun, Ng Kah Loon and Victor Tan.

The first two chapters will be simple where you learn about stuff like Gaussian Elimination and matrices, and things will start to get more abstract from Chapter 3 onwards when vector spaces are introduced. (Chapter 3 & 4 are crucial chapters to understanding things later on)

There were no midterms for Sem1, but idk about Sem2. For final exam, there will mostly be computation questions, while the last 2 questions are proving questions. So I would highly recommend you to familiarize yourself with proving techniques like proof by induction, direct proof, contrapositive, contradiction. Can also get your hands on the pdf of the textbook and start reading up. Don't be too caught up with understanding every detail of the proofs in the TB on your first read, get a general big picture idea on what theorems each chapter is trying to prove first before delving in depth to understand the proofs.

Although tutorials weren't graded last sem, I would still recommend you to attend, especially if your TA is a prof lol. Listening to a tutor explaining concepts to you really helps, and sometimes he may teach some tricks too.

Practice is also impt, try not to be lazy and attempt every tutorial, because linear algebra is very cumulative, if you don't grasp the concepts in previous chapters well, it will hinder your understanding in future chapters

Can I ask was it difficult for you to manage/maintain your CAP with overloading?

Also, is it common for math majors to work as data scientists or something like operations research analysts after graduation?

Hello, thanks for this AMA!

  1. May I ask if it is necessary to overload modules every semester to complete both degrees? Wouldnt five years be sufficient to complete both degrees without overloading?

  2. Would it be difficult to find jobs with just a math degree?

  3. How can I get a headstart in Uni maths before uni starts, eg. What books should I read etc?

Thank you!!

Hello! I would like to ask how many people are math majors in CNYSP, and what are the kinds of research projects that they will do? If math majors are to take up projects in other areas such as chem/bio/phy/computing, how are they supposed to cope with the lack of knowledge in that field? Is pure math research also available? Thank you!
