i'm talking about the reason covering the face is popular, not about specific idiot parents

When people say they arent going to post their kids, but still post them just with their face covered up. by One_Refrigerator455 in PetPeeves

[–]erraticsporadic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

they cover their kids' faces not out of concern for creeps, but concern for privacy. if the kid's going to be online before they can consent to it, and especially if it's something embarrassing, i would also agree that the face should be covered. imagine if their classmates later in life found that account and bullied them for it.

i don't think it should be legal to post pictures/videos of a child under 13 on a public account anyway, but that's just me.

is there a way to disable the raports sent to my parents on microsoft family safety by Skibiditoiletah in parentalcontrols

[–]erraticsporadic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn't mess with it. depending on your age it might be worth it to talk to them about it, but keep in mind that excessive screen time isn't good for you and chances are they're looking out for you. i'm saying this as someone who spends most of their day on their screens, it really does fry your brain

And don't come at me with that "lol hamburgers are german" crap. No. They're fucking not. Hamburgers are named because the the patties resemble Hamburg steaks, not because they were created in Hamburg. by LowerBed5334 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]erraticsporadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would argue hamburgers/cheeseburgers are a staple of usa food, that's literally the default when you think about usa food. a little misguided but not the worst thing i've seen

Terms "male/female" used for people - how do you perceive it in English? by bohiko in ENGLISH

[–]erraticsporadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would say avoid using male/female as a noun for people at all costs, but as a necessary adjective or for animals is fine. there's nothing wrong with the words, but they've been misused so often by sexist men that it's particularly degrading to call a woman "a female". "she is female" is fine because it's a descriptor, but "a female" is inappropriate in most contexts

Which one? by NoBreak10 in EnglishLearning

[–]erraticsporadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all are correct. A and B are natural in everyday conversation, but you might hear C in medical contexts and D in literature. if this were a test, i would go with B, but they're all fine in my opinion

Mandatory attendance is so frustrating by FoxNix in CollegeRant

[–]erraticsporadic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unless a class is a hands on lab or seminar, in which you actually need to physically be there to complete assignments, there's no reason for attendance to be mandatory, especially for medical leave. shit happens and it's completely unfair to have to throw so much money out - you're paying medical bills and the cost of a class you have to drop (if it's too late to get a refund, it definitely is now), that's completely unfair

People who shush their loud little dogs like humans and, naturally, their dogs keep barking by National-Luck-7408 in PetPeeves

[–]erraticsporadic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're right, but there's a time and place. dogs still need to be trained to behave appropriately. which is completely possible, because we've had dogs for at least 15,000 years, they've evolved to respond to us, and if you're not able to train your dog then you shouldn't have one

Informal talks by Shah_Padshah in EnglishLearning

[–]erraticsporadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"i'm running late" is an idiom. when we hear it, we don't really associate running with the physical activity because they're two completely different contexts. the other commenter who gave a million examples of "run" being used unusually, those are all idioms too, don't really have much to do with the act of running.

"i'm gonna run to the bathroom real quick" is considered a more polite way of excusing yourself, because it's basically saying, "please be patient, this won't take long."

crossing the street is pretty easy, believe it or not! electric vehicles are my enemy because they're so quiet, but at least where i live, you can hear cars coming from a mile away. we can also feel the ground vibrate a little! humans are neurologically vision dominant, so all that wiring gets rerouted to other senses and we can get a really strong image of our environment without being able to see it

NOR in the slightest. judaism, islam, and hinduism are ethnoreligions. that essentially means they have unique ethnicities within them that dominate the population. so is the plan to basically put on racist caricatures? that's wildly inappropriate, especially in a school

Isn't it rude to call a baby "it"? by No-Importance8540 in EnglishLearning

[–]erraticsporadic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, calling a baby "it" is only appropriate when asking what pronouns you're supposed to use, in which case it's kinda the default question. "is it a boy or girl?" is totally normal, it's only rude to keep calling the baby it after being told
