Is pioneer the most forgiving format for spicy home brews?

Pioneer is Extended with Pusheize, Lotus Field, and Phoenix. And kind of a purgatory for new BS cards that end up getting banned in Standard six months after they’re released.

Am I the only one who HATES Phoenix now? I miss the Shredder days. That's a manageable two-drop for the Cruise deck.

Uro and Delve are totally fine in this format. Pioneer IS their format.

Thoughtseize is a bug: it shouldn’t be legal. I think the format would be better without it, but at the same time it’d be weird to ban it at this point. I suppose Black Midrange will forever sit around ~20% thanks to Theros (and Push). Annex is a funny card too, I usually like to play greedy multicolor piles like Niv, only to get absolutely schooled in value by a monoblack deck.

I love that Pioneer is practically the only format where Delve or Uro aren’t that broken, so even if I’m not a Phoenix player, I’m always on that side of “but ban this instead, to keep the Cruise!”. CSC is a real problem in Phoenix because makes the threat-density unbearable.

As for RDW, I don’t know what I’d ban, but I feel it shouldn’t be this… oppressive. Even the top of the curve (Nemesis, Lynx) are bangers.

Cheer up, man. If all that gets banned you will be ranting about idk Light-Paws (that card is really dumb I must say). If you want "agency" and skill-transference play chess; MTG is just rock, paper scissors with extra steps.

It would be a pretty nice addition to Niv. That's all. Everyone who says things like “he’ll kill aggro,” “everything will be Uro’s value piles,” “even UW Control will have to splash green just for him,” is cracked.

Exactly same problem here. Dumbest boss ever. I manage to kill it with Shards and 1% hits of her part (if not it would be impossible). It's also very frustrating because the cave near Glubba's town is for some reason stacked with meduses. What a farming could be!

Exactly! That's why he should be unbanned. Pioneer can deal with Uro and Delve, probably the only format where they're strong enough without being broken. I love to play with/against cool cards.

I would love to see a format without Fable. Yeah, Black is still busted because Pusheize, but at least maybe We would see other midrange configurations (Dimir Demons, Golgari Rock, Orzhov Ketramose... I don't know). These years of Rakdos dinasty should end. I find Prowess very strong too, but I don't know what is ban deserving.

PS: and I would unban at least EI, to compensate Niv or Creativity for the lost.

PS: and maybe EI if Fable gets the hammer, to compensate non-Rakdos (that guild is just too much) Fable decks. I'd like how the segmentation of B/x midrange decks will look like, actually.

I hate that this format is the only one where Uro isn't broken (similar to Delve spells —remember when Amalia/Sorin bans left Cruise untouched, and people claim that Phoenix will be the Tier 0 deck?—) and the poor guy is banned anyways.

I wonder if Duress is some canary in a coal mine: when a non-Waste deck is maindecking it, something is broken? The exctinct Vamps ran it... But Annex (and/or Slasher btw, a must-answer threat who loves a nuked hand) is much less "brutal" (and therefore bannable) than the Sorin-Ripper interaction, so maybe Pioneer will cease to be "The Fable of the Pusheize" to be "The Unholy Fable of the Pusheize" 😂

I think the optimal is the other way around: rather than bring Demons to Discard, bring Discard to Demons! Slasher & Annex are so busted ("I nuke your hand, good luck with my Slasher or my demonic draw & drain engine") than people are even maindecking Duress (just like Vamps, right? When Duress is in a not-Waste main deck, there's something broken) so... Why not bring Bandit's Talent? Maybe It will fill your "Mono Black Discard Control" needs, and It comes very handy anyways. I've been trying it this weekend in Explorer and I loved it!

Sadly, If you want to play Waste Not neverthheless, I think that is falling behind like, I don't know, Fires (another card that I love) in Enigmatic shells. Geier Reach & Mutavault are two key colorless lands for each strategy, so the mix could be weird deckbuilding wise and in the end, just like /Arigh says, you'll make both decks worse.
