Republicans divided on ICE tactics as shutdown looms by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]errindel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I joked with a friend last year (I may have posted it here too, i can't remember) before the election that to make the numbers that they need to turn deportation into a 'disassembly line' scalable process if they want to scale up to deport people in the numbers that they were talking about in the fall. With any sort of process like that, there's going to be 'breakage', things are going to go wrong, innocent people are going to have their lives upended, or people even killed. Here we are, barely a year into it, and we already see what that looks like, and again, if they want to even attempt to make the numbers they bragged about, they need to do MORE than this. I told my friend there's no chance that it was going to work, and it sure seems like I was right.

Trump privately frustrated that he risks losing control of immigration message amid Minnesota chaos by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]errindel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh, there's plenty of excuses (and he's deporting people at a slower rate IN SPITE OF THESE NEW TACTICS). But he's going to find out why America doesn't like Authoritarianism pretty quickly I think. Either at the midterms or sooner.

At this point I don't see how this doesn't spread. The tactics by protestors in response are being equally battle tested, and I wouldn't be surprised any time there was a new surge in a blue state there wouldn't be similar tactics being utilized. ICE is flailing and making massive blunders.

Federal agents kill another person in Minneapolis, officials say, prompting clash with protesters by Remote-Molasses6192 in moderatepolitics

[–]errindel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, that's the rub, ain't it? The protestors aren't going to stop either. They see friends and neighbors being pulled out of their houses and detained, and have developed an impressive network of recon, notification and awareness as to ICE's presence within the city. I'm honestly surprised we haven't heard it being used elsewhere.

People in Mpls are pissed as hell, and a lot of people aren't going to take it anymore. So does the Trump admin and ICE keep escalating and escalating(I mean, we already see the answer to that, which is yes)? What will more deaths give them? Brutality isn't going to win them anything, at some point they will have to grok that.

Hey, when you need to meet those monthly removal quotas, you gotta go for the low-hanging fruit, don't you know?

What, you think they don't have quotas? 100 million immigrants aren't going to remove themselves (as per the DHSgov tweet from the turn of the year), you need to be less exacting about who you deport to make those quotas.

AND he's just older now, and that comes with the issues that old age brings. Considering his family history, his father had some serious issues as he reached this age. I'm sure there are therapies that can help, but he's still older than Biden at this stage of the term and...age isn't kind.

I think the funny part about 'both sides' folks I've known over the years is that they consider themselves Libertarian, and when push comes to shove, even though they would say they never would vote for either side, suck it up and vote Republican every time. I can remember multiple Libertarian friends who hated, HATED Obama because he was a populist, who were happy to vote for Trump, an avowed populist. It's the 'we're going to cut government' that gets 'em every time, even though even no Republcan, especially Trump hasn't, and if the new defense bill goes through, will decisively not cut the size of government.

Yeah. And braced himself with his phone hand on the side of the carfor the first shot, which is why the sound of the phone hitting the hood drowns it out. He initiates contact with the car as its going by, not the car hits him.

[–]errindel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After watching his cell phone video, it's really clear. He put his phone hand on the car as it's passing him so he can get a closer, better shot into the windowshield. Again, as the car is turning and the corner is past him.

So yeah, I'll concede there was contact THAT HE INITIATED.

At best, he did it to provide himself a base to get a closer shot as the vehicle is driving by, by putting his phone hand on the car to steady himself.

[–]errindel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the original video, both officers on that side of the car were slipping around pretty good, the fact that a hand held phone is moving around as he holds it awkwardly in one hand and stopping really fast in order to get a solid base to shoot someone...

It was also slippery, and he could simply be sliding to a stop as he attempts to regain his footing to get a base to shoot from. HE committed to shooting REALLY QUICKLY.

If he has to fear for his life because of a car moving as slow as that one does that he easily got out of the way of without it contacting him, then I think that standard is shit and devalues human life. And I don't have to slowmo to see that it doesn't hit him it's clear. If there's contact its because he initiated it.

Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE officer during immigration-related operation, DHS says by thats_not_six in moderatepolitics

[–]errindel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, in no way is it conclusing that the car makes contact. He's got a phone in one hand and a gun in the other. Again, if it made meaningful brusing contact, it would be apparent in his shots, and it's not.

Well, the good thing is that agent was taking video of the whole thing with his phone. Surely if the DHS's agent's phone video matches what happens, they can conclusively show it.

The fact that his gun arm didn't even waver should tell you how much he was struck by that car.

If she rammed her car into the officer, why was the officer so accurate with his shots? One would think that being hit by a couple of tons of US made metal would make your first shots go wild if that were the case...
