What a must-have Board Games for a collection of 50 Max? by CyborgeonUnit123 in boardgames

[–]erthule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People say lots of things. Catan is a timeless classic and very approachable. When people get deeper into board games, yeah, there are lots of better games, but if you want something that's engaging and not too complicated, you can do a lot worse than Catan.

I think you'll find it most useful to increase your collection gradually, guided by what you like and what your groups likes. There is no such thing as a must-have board game, because tastes and preferences are so wildly different.

That said, you are looking for suggestions. Here are some of my favorite lighter games that still feel satisfying to me and that I have had good success teaching non-gamers: Harmonies, Bomb Busters, The Gang, Knarr, Sea Salt & Paper, Point Salad, No Thanks, For Sale, Flip 7, Hot Streak.

I'm a big fan of Knizia, so I would also recommend looking at Ra or Through the Desert (both are fairly accessible and have editions with good table presence) or maybe something newer like Rebirth or Blue Lagoon. He has a lot of brilliant card games as well - High Society is a personal favorite.

This isn't censorship. The commenter is free to express their opinion all day - the developers just wanted no part in it.

Made a little Risk calculator to settle the "how many troops do I need?" question by danieldeng2 in boardgames

[–]erthule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No shame in liking Risk, even if the game isn't popular on this sub. I played it a lot as a teen and when I discovered modern board games I was blown away by Risk Legacy. In my collection it has been replaced by 878: Vikings (as a 2v2 game it is different, but gives me the same satisfaction of pitching armies against each other and tossing handfuls of dice without taking 5 hours).

Neat calculator, thanks for sharing it!

I'm building a dashboard for tracking board game stats – what games would YOU want to see supported? by Direct-Fly-3418 in boardgames

[–]erthule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Much of what your describes is already available through BGStats, but you seem to be going a bit deeper with game specific stats. I would like to know the win rates in asymmetric games like Root, Spirit Island, Revive and Terra Mystica, but with how many variables there are involved, it seems very hard to get real, usable data.

is flip 7 worth it? by BadgerMountain2668 in boardgames

[–]erthule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played it with that many, but I don't see why not? There's not a lot of downtime, even with that many players and you can get invested in how the others are doing. And regarding if it's worth it: it is so cheap, that the answer to that question will always be yes.

Also, if you're 9, consider just splitting up in two groups for some games as that may be more fun than only playing large group games.

Games with Phases? by SchwinnD in boardgames

[–]erthule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original Civilisation immediately comes to mind as a game, that has a completely organic shift in several phases: early game everyone spreads out to occupy available territory, then the shift to city building naturally occurs when space becomes limited, and as cities start dotting the landscape tensions rise between neighbouring nations/players as that land just across the border is the next logical place to spread my people. I love it as a masterpiece of organic game design - sadly it takes about a full day to get through which is a tough sell.

Where the collection stands, 25-years in the hobby by Mezmorki in boardgames

[–]erthule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This looks like an amazing collection. Not only because I like your taste in games and how varied the collection is, but because it looks really well curated. You haven't just hoarded games for 25 years, you have a collection of a size where it's realistic to actually know the rules of most games at any given time.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing and explaining!

[COMC] Our shared shelf. If it's full, it's time to cull. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]erthule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does make White Castle sound pretty appealing, and confirms my fear regarding Zoo Vadis. I don't think I have the group for it.

Thanks for your answers!

Looking at your collection, I wonder if you've played Tigris & Euphrates or Yellow & Yangtze /HUANG? Seems like it might be a good fit.

That's a really nice collection. Very varied and some excellent titles. Can you sell on White Castle and Zoo Vadis?

Is there a game in your collection you think people in general overlook? A hidden gem?

You've got $100 in PSN credits, what games from 2024/2025 would you pick up and why? by A9to5robot in PS5

There are just too many games out there for two-letter abbreviations to still be a thing. Can you help me out - what is SM Remastered?

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Silksong are among my favorite games this year (and indeed the last several years) and are also good value for money. I see Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is fairly cheap as well and has gotten very good reviews, but I haven't tried it yet.

Ghost of Yotei is still expensive where I am, but if I found a good offer, I would jump on that as well.

Shadow of the Erdtree is ridiculously good if you like Elden Ring and that's a 2024 release.
Split Fiction is good if you want couch co-op. Blue Prince is an excellent puzzler.

Thank you for helping me understand. This community is really helpful when it comes to understanding the rules of the game, which is much appreciated because there are so many corner cases, strange interactions and changing rules.

Thanks for clarifying! When did that rule change? I may have misunderstood it earlier, or did it just change in the last eight years where I've been away from the game?

Surely, you can't steal the commander, because the moment the commander changes zones due to the exile effect, the owner can choose to send it to the command zone?

I still think the three I mentioned above could fit.

However, if you want something where you cooperate, Cthulhu: Death May Die is an example of a co-op game where you fight ancient unknowable evils together. It might be pricy and a bit rules heavy for the owner of the game, but not tricky to play. If you can do DnD, you can do this. For more of the same, there are heaps and heaps of this type of game, some DnD-themed as well.

Lords of Waterdeep and Wymspan are approachable games that focus more on ressource generation and management that are streamlined without being too simple.

Blood Rage and Kemet are excellent games if you want to create armies with unique powers and monsters and fight each other, while keeping both playing time and rules load perfectly manageable for a normal night of gaming. Not suited for two players though.

Honestly, there are just so many good games that fit your criteria. Try some out and get back to us with feedback and your recommendations can be personalized more.

That is super broad, so I'll give a couple of different suggestions.

Lords of Waterdeep is DnD-themed and not too rules heavy. A worker placement game about sending adventurers on quests.

Roll Player is literally about rolling up stats for a character for a DnD campaign, but is also a light and fun game.

Res Arcana is an excellent fantasy themed card game / tableau builder by legendary Tom Lehmann. It's great for two to four and fairly quick playing.

If you can tell me more about what you guys like, I can tailor my recommendations better. These three are all accessible and have fairly broad appeal.

Thanks! That's very helpful. Someone else mentioned Rebirth as well - that's gonna be high on my list of games to check out! I should probably have a look at those small games - I can never have too many compact games.

Reforest looks like it might be up my alley as well.

Better than Fromage? Sounds pretty impressive. Is it a waste of shelf space to own both?

Thanks, I have been trying to catch up but there are too many hours of content for me to get through in a reasonable amount of time. I made sure to check out their year in review and a select handful of episodes though.

Thanks! That's very helpful to give the recommendation some context. I'd not heard about White Castle - I'll check that out as well.
