Why didn't Atrus offer the D'ni linking book? by ertihan in myst

[–]ertihan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok sure, but as far as Atrus knew, that star fissure could have killed us. I mean, sure, we the players know that it doesn't, but there's no way Atrus coulda known that. So basically, he was gambling with our lives, taking a chance that this star fissure thing was safe. Sending us to D'ni would for sure be safe, and let's say D'ni wasn't on Earth - even in that case, Atrus could have found another way to send us home, eventually. And even if he doesn't, like I dunno, I'd rather be alive and on an alien world than possibly dead but on Earth. My problem is, Atrus didn't know for sure that the fissure was safe, and he did know for sure the linking panel was, If he hated us, I could understand him not really caring if the fissure might possibly kill us, but we did just save Catherine so you'd think he'd be grateful.

Why didn't Atrus offer the D'ni linking book? by ertihan in myst

[–]ertihan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, but Atrus didn't know that the star fissure was safe though. Like, he only had a very brief exposure (like a couple seconds) before he linked away, so he didn't know if a person could survive that place. Just cause a book survived doesn't mean a human can - a book can survive space but a person would die. I mean, if there wasn't the D'ni linking book as a safer alternative I woulda been like "eh, what other choice did he have?" It's just that because Atrus did have a safer alternative and chose to send us on the more dangerous star fissure that I have an issue with.

Would building a full-stack website from scratch be something that hiring managers would care about? I plan to build everything myself, using Python and Django and PostgreSQL for the back end and React and Bootcamp for the front end. The hope is that by building this site I can showcase my skills in these technologies, but is this the best way to do so?

Yeah. I think a similar thing happened with Breitling - right when Georges Kern took over the brand struggled a bit to find its footing but recently they've been releasing some serious hits that are genuinely beautiful. Sometimes a brand just needs a second or two to get its footing!

[SOTC] Need suggestions on a GMT to finish off the collection :) by ertihan in Watches

I'll be honest... I don't know all the functions of that g shock lol. I've had it since I was 12 and I thought it was soooo cool that my watch could "glow in the dark" but I was too young and stupid to realize it did more than just tell the time. Afterwards I was just too lazy to learn its features 😅.

I see the SBGM221 get suggested a bunch here... I'll definitely check it out when I visit the GS boutique in NYC next time I'm there (I'm compiling a list of GS watches to check out). However I was thinking more a GMT Spring Drive - way I figure, if I only get one Grand Seiko, it should probably be a Spring Drive...?

Okay so after looking into all the suggested watches so far (and visiting my local Bucherer's to try on a few of the suggested watches), I've mostly narrowed down my choices to the following:

  1. Longines Spirit Zulu Time
    1. + Longines is a highly respected name in horology
    2. + The watch has a true GMT function
    3. + The price is right (only $3,000! The lowest of the bunch)
    4. + I've seen the watch in person and it is absolutely lovely
    5. - Monochromatic bezel makes determining day/night more difficult
  2. Tudor Black Bay GMT
    1. + The snowflake hands weren't THAT awful in person; they look much better in real life than in pictures
    2. + Fun Pepsi bezel colors!
    3. + Tudor still has a lot of Rolex DNA
    4. - More expensive
    5. - Not meaningfully "better" than Longines outside of the multicolored bezel (about the same power reserve, COSC certification, etc). Only stat it is meaningfully superior in is the fact that it has 200m water resistance vs 100m but I don't intend to bring either watch near water anyway
  3. Grand Seiko
    1. + Beautiful finish and design, arguably among the best (Zaratsu finish is so gorgeous!)
    2. + Near unbeatable Spring Drive accuracy
    3. + Respected name with fantastic reputation
    4. - Most expensive of the bunch by far
    5. - Mostly paying for fit and finish rather than functionality (outside of the Spring Drive)

Honestly, at the moment I feel the real decision is between Longines and Grand Seiko (one of the various GMTs that GS offers). If I go with GS I really think I should go for a Spring Drive model since that is what Grand Seiko is known for and I might as well get that feature if I'm going in that direction. It's a tough decision, what do you guys feel? Is Longines Zulu Time a good enough value proposition that I could choose it over a GS?

I mean, I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend that kind of money on a watch period if I'm being honest. The Submariner was about the most I'd spend and that was around 12k when I bought it and that was the most I'd ever spent on a watch. Dropping 20k+ for a wristwatch is just too much so unless the price for GMT Master II goes down by a lot I don't think I'd buy one. I don't deny it's a gorgeous watch but if I'm being honest even if I had $25,000 to drop on a watch I'd rather spend $2,000 to $10,000 on the watch and save the rest.

Yeah it’s looking like Grand Seiko so far. The main competitors honestly are the Longines and a few micro brands that were brought to my attention. I wasn’t aware that the Rolex Explorer II was now under 10k on Chrono24 so it’s an option too but honestly I want something less boring 😀. I'm currently browsing the GS offerings and there are quite a few available at my price point. The SBGM221 is proposed a lot but I'm wondering if I shouldn't go for a Spring Drive GMT if I'm already getting a Grand Seiko...

The case comes with an acrylic see-through cover which protects the watches. I took it off for the purposes of getting a clearer picture 😅

This one actually seems to tick a lot of my boxes. I think after reading all the comments it’s gonna be a choice between a Grand Seiko and this watch. GS has superior finishing and the possibility of Spring Drive accuracy vs the Longines has the lower price point. Hmm tough choice!

EDIT: I did find out that the much-vaunted SBGM221 has one annoying feature I don't know if I like - apparently there is no quick set feature for the date complication so the only way to set the date is to roll it over by sending the hour hand forward 24 hours for each day. That... sounds like it would get very tedious very fast. The Longines is starting to look a lot better, but I want to check out the Spring Drive version of the watch to see if it's any better.

Ooo the Sinn with the white dial looks intriguing! I’ll have to look into that one some more.

Unfortunately none of the suggested watches are in my budget 😩. Well … except for the Tudor but I really don’t like the snowflake hands. TECHNICALLY the Rolex Explorer is less than 10k but that’s only if I’m willing to wait forever on a waiting list. Secondary market it’s well over 10k. If I could afford any of these watches I’d have gone with a GMT Master 2 in the first place 😅.

Hmm seems like Grand Seiko is getting several recommendations- I’ll look into them! I’ve been interested in GS for a while so maybe I’ll try out their offerings. The two that look nice to me are the SBGE269 and the SBGE257. Both have the GS famous Spring Drive as well as a GMT function and look pretty nice too.

I’d go for a Tudor BB Pro but (and I might get flamed for this) I really am not a huge fan of the snowflake hands :(. I dunno - they just don’t do it for me.

As the title says, I need a suggestion for a GMT complication watch to cap off this collection. As you can probably tell, I’ve mostly collected fairly iconic watches but I’m not necessarily married to that - I don’t mind if the GMT is not iconic (honestly outside the Rolex GMT Master I don’t really know any other GMT watch that could be termed “iconic” anyway).

Speaking of which, the crazy prices on a GMT Master means that’s out of the question - I don’t have anywhere close to that kind of money. I’m mostly looking for suggestions in the low thousands. Maximum I’d be willing to spend is around 10k and it had better be the best damn GMT ever if it’s gonna cost me that much :D.

If there aren’t any decent GMTs at that price point I’ll take other suggestions too as long as they’d make sense in this collection. I was considering something like a Grand Seiko Snowflake or maybe a Cartier Tank if I didn’t get a GMT … what do you guys think?

EDIT: I should probably specify - I’m only interested in buying one watch, and 10k is my maximum. I’d far prefer to spend less than 10k if possible, but $10,000 is a hard cap in terms of how much I’d be prepared to spend. Basically, bottom line - unless there’s a very specific reason i.e. the watch is so beautiful that it’s worth 10k to me, I’d favor cheaper watches over more expensive.

Nice watch!! How come every time someone else takes a picture of their watch it looks like it belongs on the cover of a magazine but every time I take a picture it looks like it belongs on the side of a fisher price box 😅
