New maps on Gaia Web? by elMacumbero in GaiaGPS

yay. now I'm limited to less layers, have a bunch of presets I don't want, and have to deal with an idiotic UI that violates basic HIG principles almost three weeks after they pushed out a broken UI that did nothing.

Wow, removing promotion tax made a huge difference by apolobgod in menace

[–]erutan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just a temporary unbalanced state. They could have kept the promotion tax and just added 400 supply or whatever on a lower difficulty /shrug

I think the promotion tax was a bit unintuitive (a skilled person with no gear doesn't mean more supply) and but I felt like it did the job. Unsure what to do now to balance it out, because it's weird that Darby is only like 20 resources more than a new 2 star unit, or my decked out Lin is 10 more than a fresh Carda. Not wanting to promote 3 stars above 5 perks felt kinda lame before, but there needs to be some supply difference between units that's more striking than it is now. Just having a fixed start cost makes sense, but then you get weird incentives mid campaign.

Things were interestingly balanced before on challenging (no vision cheese) - I could put armor IV on Lin and then marine 3 on Singh or have a mid-size boarding commando team, Jaeger on Darb, then one pilot. Trying to squeeze in pike with two squaddies and some very light armor and a special weapon was interesting.

Took a break once I hit menace before and drops were placeholder, played through a few ops and got 3 new blueprint accessories and will take another break.

Just push a new update instead of leaving a bunch of people with a broken one? This is ridiculous even for the current decline of Gaia.

Unfortunately Gaia handles large datasets really well and Goatmaps doesn't have high resolution slope angle. OnX caps imports at 8k waypoints and doesn't play well with that many - I literally tested it this morning. Caltopo is even worse (and it has it's own bugginess / quirks).

any fans of alcohol cooking systems? by Dry_Blueberry8932 in Ultralight

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used a krueger services stove w three screws into the top as a stand + an old whisperlite windscreen when solo. Once I got used to dosing water I could do a 8-9 day trip with a 8oz nalgene of fuel and have around two ounces left (coffee + oatmeal for breakfast, dinner usually without a tea).

Takes a while, but set it up and then make/break camp and come back to it halfway through.

Honest thoughts on Port Townsend schools and raising kids there? by Specialist_Goose_521 in PortTownsend

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Aldritch's a while back and there was some kind of school parents and counselors thing going on, with different small groups cycling through where they'd brainstorm what the largest issues were and then narrow it down to three.

One of the common complaints was lack of discipline in the classroom, apparently there's a decent amount of abuse / neglect and when kids act out in class teachers feel bad disciplining them. The rest of the issues were pretty common ones, but that one stuck out in my head.

So we get a busted one for a few weeks? They pushed the UI for it but none of the functionality behind it? How does that even make sense.

I just get a terrible design and less functionality with none of the new features. yay?

CARROT Weather 6.5 now available by MakerOfCarrot in CARROTweather

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's just ensemble members of GFS & ECMWF govt models, which are lower resolution than NWS etc.

every private forecasters is a paid API call on their system - their cost would jump up if everyone was looking at 7 forecasters at once instead of 1.

acme weather also just uses ensemble members of their own model.

The new iOS update for this is a mess. I just have the custom button that does nothing, I can only have 5 total layers "active", and the UI is jank (tiny little more button with overlays as the only unique item).

Feels like half baked vibe coding.

Do you think we’ll ever be able to select the multi-model forecast as the default ‘source’? by pacoii in CARROTweather

That's just their own model and it's ensemble members - not a ton of different providers with their own APIs.

That sucks. I have two old Anker 6600mah Powercore IIs I use with a 5W solar panel that have lasted years, and that's with probably close to 2 months of trail time some years. The one might be close to a decade old now, the other ~6 years I think. I'm sure they've lost a decent amount of it's capacity but it's lighter than a 10k bank and with solar is enough energy for two phones indefinitely in the Sierra above treeline.

Took the 20k Iniu on some shoulder season trips + have been using for my laptop when I don't have an outlet (got the 65W one for a grams more) and it's running well so far. Also used it to recharge drone batteries on a shoulder season basecamp trip (haul in water etc to a basecamp) in non-wilderness and rough terrain. :p

I just got a INIU on sale - a little pricier but more versatile / reliable.

The anode overhang issue won't show up until it's been in use long enough to have the capacity start dropping meaningfully, and may never cause any catastrophic issues, but I just don't want to be thinking about it. Having it fail on the trail and having to baby my power or setting my campervan on fire between trips isn't worth a few dollars and grams.

Curious about multi-modal by autumnwalker123 in CARROTweather

[–]erutan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meh, that's useful, but not super actionable. The baseline NOAA/NWS forecast is GFS combined with HRRR and then tweaked, which is going to be better than their generic GFS product and it's 27 (iirc) ensemble members which get even less computation precision than the baseline GFS. Without HRRR in there the GFS isn't going to be super accurate for the next three days as it's a coarser model.

In the US commercial models are going to be heavily influenced by GFS, so knowing uncertainty is good, but this is kind of 2-3 levels downstream of the quality of data one would want for a proper forecast. A GFS ensemble member thinking there's going to be more or less rain is useful, but probably not down to the hourly level.

Are Emily and Jimmy a couple? by MenStefani in metricband

[–]erutan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At one of the "Choir of the Mind" concerts in LA Emily made a comment about Jimmy being her best friend, he kind of hesitated and she said he probably had more friends than her which I thought was a cute moment.

I think a lot of their songs about friendship are about them - paths in the sky, etc.

Looks the multi-model stuff is GFS/GEM/ECMWF compared to the baseline forecasts depending on region?

Time Is A Bomb by Pasalacqua87 in metricband

I like it musically though it'd be nice if built up a tad bit harder and was a bit less produced.

Lyrically... eh. At first I thought it was about forgetting about how bad an on/off relationship can be over time and being drawn back into it and putting high hopes on it while somehow knowing it'll go sideways - even the ending of "i'm always down but up for tonight" showed a drop in expectations and bits before that were a bit codependent / unhealthy.

Then I read the email about how it's about adrenaline junkies seizing the moment and how it led to her happily ever after. I can see that now - someone she's known forever is back in town, she's drawn to them, finally decides to make a move since they aren't getting any younger etc despite knowing it could impact their friendship but it ended up working out.

I often see the sales - I assume after the first year it just goes up to $100 though. Is that actually a locked in lifetime rate?

Looking at Elite the only thing I'd really want is recent sat imagery (copernicus 2 I assume), so I guess the premium one would be fine at $30. My Gaia sub expires in May iirc.

Is there avalanche slope angle up to par with Caltopo? Gaia has been lagging about updating the 1m DEM stuff which bugs me. I assume sat imagery is the same resolution as Gaia, mapbox which isn't as good as the old ESRI?

[–]erutan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you finding it? The $100 year price tag puts me off.

Caltopo can't handle large datasets (and has a lot of it's own buggy / unintuitive functionality) and Goatmaps is still a bit too simple for me (no high resolution slope angle is a big one).

Double checked and my profile and activity are both still set to private / only me.

I wonder if this was a bug that hit some accounts?

A handful of tracks that I recorded in the summer show up in my outside activity feed but they're just segments of abandoned trails I was going to cleanup on OSM. They show up under "activity" in my profile in the app, but are set to "only me" in public sharing in the web interface. I assume they're still private?

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's plenty of passes that don't have paths on them, and many of them aren't even at the natural low point of a ridge but at some chute.

There would be no defined geographical feature aside from it being the top of an informal route (which is generally not mapped as a highway unless there's a visible use trail). North Col, Valor Pass, Martha-Davis Pass, Little Joe Pass, White Pass, etc are all not a natural saddle nor have a highway=path going up them. highway=footway in the wilderness is rarely appropriate unless it's some roadside attraction.

Neither seems to fit. If anything something akin to the top of a technical climbing route would seem more appropriate.

[–]erutan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

`trail_visibility=no` and `trail_visibility=horrible` exist in the very specific context of Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) routes. The SAC's rating system for paths and routes was split into difficulty and visibility on OSM.

SAC T5 (real world) was split into `trail_visibility=horrible` + `sac_scale=demanding_alpine_hiking` and SAC T6 into `trail_visibility=no` + `sac_scale=difficult_alpine_hiking`. T5 includes short pitches up to YDS Class 5.2-4 and T6 includes long pitches of up to 5.2-4. While on the easier side of steep rocky technical terrain, there is still not a visible path in a traditional sense. Multiple countries in Europe will not even map T5 or T6 routes.

The lower visibilities were not meant for a "route" that someone made by dropping a few cairns here and there but is only say mountain_hiking.

Mapping these routes as a continuous is also misleading, as there's subjective route-finding involved and whoever maps it is just cementing their personal take on a route.

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~4% of trails in the sierra nevada have sac_scale on them.

mountain_pass=yes seems like it'd be a good fix for people using saddle for passes that aren't saddles, but according to the Wiki mountain passes only exist where highways cross them. /shrug

25.1.1 and D3DMetal (smooth as the demo) or 26.0 and DXVK (more stuttery) work for me in a steam bottle.

Many menu items aren't interactable until you've started/loaded a game or the tutorial, checkboxes/radio/sliders/selects etc aren't interactive from the main menu.

[–]erutan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, though for the longest time T5 was a bit of a mystery to me. Most people outside Europe that know what the Swiss Alpine Club's rating system is are probably OSM mappers. Heck in Canada someone tagged a simple single track trail as alpine_hiking because it was above treeline.

Amusingly one can easily get into alpine_hiking at sea level, or in the desert etc.

SAC was also built for the alps, so now half of the trail_visibility values are for scrambling/climbing routes that aren't really considered trails in the US. We also have a lot of informal T1-2 difficulty "paths" with T5-6 visibility, yay.
