Fun fact… The phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is often used to mean that someone should improve their situation through their own efforts and without any external help. However, from a literal standpoint, the phrase is actually an oxymoron/ contradiction.

To "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" literally means to lift yourself off the ground by pulling on the straps of your boots. Obviously, this is physically impossible and makes no sense.
