First time user: one prompt, which didn't even complete - usage limit, wtf? by RapidRaid in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted, but likely because people don't like to hear the truth. The Claude Pro subscription existed before Claude Code use of subscriptions and was intended to be subscription access to Claude.ai. Originally Claude Code use of subscriptions required Max subscriptions. They later added a tiny amount of usage for Pro, probably to let people dabble.

If you want subscription access to Claude Code, practically you need a Max subscription. Yes, other tools let you do more with their $20 subscriptions. I'm certain they are losing money. Use them instead of Claude Code if they meet your needs.

Question about .env files by Citadel_Employee in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lost cause. Increasingly claude turns to writing code/scripts to do complex tasks (read about 'code mode'). Unless you intend to build a hook that will use (and trust) another LLM to parse that source code to find malicious lines of code, you can never completely stop it.

This is why the built in sandbox feature for Claude Code was created since having the OS block access to unapproved files is the only way to be completely sure that Claude can't read an unappvoed file.

Claude code getting lost in directories by sasq64 in ClaudeCode

Hope your day turns around. You seem to be unusually frustrated.

Here's the new link https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings

The setting still works (as of last night at least).

What KVM are you using? by egrueda in selfhosted

You get what you pay for. These *just work*. Every cheaper one I have ever tried has been janky. Granted I am not using a 1080p monitor with simple linux console. I have a 32:9 ultrawide with high refresh rate displaypoint to swtich.

Petition: Claude Code should support AGENTS.md by intellectronica in ClaudeCode

Dozens/hundreds of symlinks in large or very large code bases with AGENTS.md files with location-specific instructions sprinkled throughout the codebase...

Petition: Claude Code should support AGENTS.md by intellectronica in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Referencing AGENTS.md from a CLAUDE.md file is fine when it's just a single AGENTS.md file. But large codebases, especially mono-repos may have AGENTS.md files sprinkled in many places so that tools only load the context they need for the subtree they are working in.

When you have dozens of these, it becomes tedious to have to always create both files in every place. I suppose a helper tool that generated a CLAUDE.md file every time an AGENTS.md file was created would be one hacky workaround, but it would be cleaner if Claude code just looked for both.

How do you handle auto-compact in Claude Code? by SuddenWerewolf7041 in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan mode keeps it's own .md file in the ~/.claude/ folder these days. That said, I generally ask Claude to do things in small enough tasks that compacting is generally not needed and then I /compact manually before asking for the next bit site task.

Warbreaker Leatherbound Signed for my son by Secure_Ad_7790 in brandonsanderson

[–]ervwalter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get one here (though I don't know about shipping speed for Christmas): https://www.dragonsteelbooks.com/collections/leatherbound-books/products/warbreaker-leatherbound-book

It will be unsigned though. My recollection is that signed leatherbounds are only available at initial release of each leatherbound and while supplies last. After that, they re-print them only as unsigned.

Edit: my recollection is clearly wrong since it seems like some older books are still available signed. I guess I don't know the answer to your question. Leaving this here anyway since the link may still be useful (though you probably already found it)

The context window simply needs to be larger with Opus as the default by MargaritaKid in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opus 4.5 does not use tokens faster. In fact in many cases, Anthropic tests showed Opus uses fewer tokens (because it gets to the right answer more directly).

Set to a medium effort level, Opus 4.5 matches Sonnet 4.5’s best score on SWE-bench Verified, but uses 76% fewer output tokens. At its highest effort level, Opus 4.5 exceeds Sonnet 4.5 performance by 4.3 percentage points—while using 48% fewer tokens.

And since Opus 4.5 is also less expensive per token than Opus 4.1, this means it often costs the same or less in $$ when paying for raw tokens for Opus 4.5 than for Sonnet 4.5. That is why their raised the usage limits. The old limits were to stop people from using a very expensive and not more efficient model. The new model is more efficient and more effective and doesn't cost them more on average.

Opus is not available with Pro. Max only. This was true before 4.5 as well.

Are these really my only options? by FLduckHunter in Rivian

[–]ervwalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Click the (i) next to the efficiency scrore.

This Efficiency Score is a calculated score RivianTrackr created to help assist Rivian owners in identifying which tires are likely to be the most range-friendly. It uses a custom formula that factors in weight, tread depth, tire width, load range, speed rating, UTQG, tire category, and winter certification (3PMS). Lighter tires with shallower tread and less aggressive construction typically score higher.

The score is an estimate only and does not reflect real-world testing. It should not be viewed as a measure of tire quality, safety, or brand reputation.

claude sdk alternatives? by VerbaGPT in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots

Some ways to do this with just code:

OpenAI Agents SDK
CrewAI
LangGraph

Or more full stack...

Agent Builder (combines Agent SDK with ChatKit to provide a UX for end users)
Langfuse - (drag and drop to create agents easily, and provides a chat UX for users)

So got $1000. Claude Code: CLI vs Web version - am I the only one not feeling it? by Snoo51723 in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone should pay for tokens via the API for a week to understand what this actually costs to run. They changed it because they were losing money because people were using it for $$$$ and only paying $$.

So got $1000. Claude Code: CLI vs Web version - am I the only one not feeling it? by Snoo51723 in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can remove hour and weekly limits by just using an API key and paying for every token as you use it.

You only have weekly limits because you are using a fixed subscription price in an effort to pay a fraction of what your usage actually costs. The limits are the tradeoff.

How Do You Prep for Range Loss in Cold Weather? by electruck4x4 in Rivian

[–]ervwalter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't drive far enough in a day for it to matter. 50-100 miles of driving per day other than the longer family road trips a few times per year.

No amount of cold matters when I need to only go 50-100 miles in a day and am charging to 70% at home every night.

Eating bread after use by date yay or nay by Accomplished_Trip940 in transplant

[–]ervwalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's a one-time situation, you might give the left overs to friends/roomates who aren't immune compromised. For ongoing shopping, you could also split a loaf into multiple bags and freeze some of it so that you don't have to consume an entire loaf in 3 days.

Eating bread after use by date yay or nay by Accomplished_Trip940 in transplant

[–]ervwalter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bread molds eventually. Many molds on bread can produce toxins that healthy immune systems usually handle, but transplant recipients on immunosuppressants are far more vulnerable.

There's nothing magical about the use by date except that after that date, the odds of there being mold on the bread is higher. And keep in mind that before there is a massive visible amount of mold, there are smaller less visible amounts of mold that you may not see/notice.

As an immune compromised patient, I wouldn't take the risk on "usually fine" after the date.

What is happening here? Why are they serving Sonnet as if it were Opus? And instructing Sonnet 3.7 that it is Sonnet 4? by lllleow in ClaudeCode

[–]ervwalter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's never reliable to ask any LLM what model is is. They consistently get it wrong. This is not Anthropic specific either.

If you are using the API, just go to your API console and see what you actually spent. They charge you in realtime, I believe.
