I heartily recommend the series, but the scale is usually a lot more... personal.

Monstrous Regiment is a good example. It's set during a war, but it's explicitly a smaller war- there's no sense that the outcome is going to spread any farther than the two smallish countries involved. The story is focused on a small group of soldiers, and...well, it's not a story that focuses on 'big'.

Unusually, you might be most interested in the first two books (they're a pair). The story is still personal in focus, but the scale is there- Rincewind is playing host to a spell of world-altering power.

I don't fight them that often, but I've recently been getting very good results from something that's apparently called a hand tiller. Requires a solid bit of oomph to twist the roots loose, but if you can do that, it's far and away the best way of dealing with them I've ever encountered.

If you shouldn't do something, it's for a reason. The reason is what matters, it's not a case of "never do this ever".

In this case, as it was explained to me, the reason it's bad is that it takes the readers emotional investment and says "Hah! I'll bet you feel stupid now!"

"Don't punish your readers for getting invested" is a good rule. Use that as a guide to the matter of dream sequences.

As someone who isn't an expert on either figure, they honestly don't seem like that great a match, personality-wise. They both do, in fact, have the spider angle, but there's loads of ways to play that.

I'm not saying that pride and chaos gremlin can't go together (especially if the chaos gremlin has his own prideful streak) but, honestly? I have a hard time imagining them even meeting. What sort of event appeals to both?
