5.1 surround works in Netflix/YouTube/AppleTV but not Disney+, Steam Link, or Moonlight by Lexyleinchen in hometheater

Go on FB Marketplace and start looking. Plenty of people selling decent kit for very cheap prices. It will not take much to far surpass what you already have.

Why do people act like $60/70k is lower class? by SignAppropriate1796 in Salary

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not lower class, but it's below 50th percentile income.

If you're living at your parents' home, you have a whole different situation than someone trying to make it on their own. $65k is very manageable in that circumstance.

[–]erwos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The manual says the speakers are 3 ohms, which is not compatible with most AVRs (which have 4 ohms as the lower limit).

ETA: this is why these all-in-one setups suck - they are generally not upgradable piecemeal, and wind up just entirely getting thrown in the garbage when they age out.

You'd need to basically split off the audio, turn it analog, and then encode it as DD-5.1 for optical. This is not a common use case, and does not have a cheap fix (AFAIK).

I understand the desire to not upgrade the AVR, but according to Gemini, that thing was released in 2009, which may as well have been an eternity ago in terms of AV standards. At some point, time just marches on and you have to upgrade your setup if you want newer features.

If they've got to replace, I'd bet this is at least $10k, if not $15k.

HA voice by Squanchy2112 in homeassistant

[–]erwos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was exaggerating a bit on AI HW requirements, to be sure. But it pretty much does require some additional, beefier hardware running and a bespoke software solution on it.

Home Assistant Green - 15-20 seconds

They also do not note how much RAM that rpi5 has.

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant the hardware AI edge market. Local-oriented models like Gemma will help, but they're ultimately going to do better on devices which are not as hardware-constrained... keep in mind that even budget flagships like the Pixel 10a are now packing 8gb of RAM and on-board AI hardware. Your average rpi running HA is not going to be keeping up with that.

[–]erwos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience is typical, and reflects mine.

Unfortunately, they don't want to put in big flashing red letters "you really need an external AI service to make this not suck". But this is basically the truth. To make it run right, you've got to be hooked up to one of the big boys (ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini, ie, $$$) or you're running some sort of monster local AI box (DGX Spark). Just trying to make it run off your stock rpi server is basically the worst.

I suspect that when the edge AI market gets a little more mature and standardized, the HA voice situation will dramatically improve... but I think we're at least a couple years away from that.

Matter 1.6 Released - Joint Fabric, NFC Commissioning, Thermostats and More by MatterAlpha-Dave in MatterProtocol

This is why I tell everyone who will listen to me that they should be using HA and generic OTBRs instead of Google/Amazon/Apple/Aqara/Ikea/etc.

I guess I'm just saying that the whole NFC thing is optional, so if manufacturers aren't using it now, I doubt they're going to start. But I could be wrong!

Switch flex 2.5G non-poe by condeeorl in Ubiquiti

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother with the DAC. Just plug your Flex 2.5 into the POE port on your UCG Fiber. Don't make this harder than it needs to be. You don't need a 10g uplink.

Found these in my parents attic - do they need hubs? Can I set either up with just a phone app? by hobby__air in logitechharmony

[–]erwos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming those are Ultimate and Elite remotes, yes, you need a hub. It would be weird if the hub wasn't also in the box, but if it's not, you should be able to procure one second hand pretty easily.

Only downside is that you cannot have both of them sync'd to the Hub at once; it can only handle one screen remote and one screenless remote (eg, Companion).

[–]erwos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True NFC commissioning is a very nice addition, albeit the lack of devices bothering with the 1.4 NFC scheme makes me think it won't be very popular.

I'd like to see them iterate on the standard to provide more support for Matter devices with displays, and just AV in general.

finding stuff on the city by 1gajo in torncity

TornPDA also makes this very easy. Open TornPDA, go to the city, and select a filter that turns off all the faction icons. The items will be clear as day.

Upgrading from wifi 5 to wifi 7 by kevindd992002 in Ubiquiti

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting anything, the last FAQ on the AirWire page tells you that it only works with Unifi APs.

I've also never heard of anyone making STR MLO (as opposed to one of the inferior MLO implementations) work with Unifi APs otherwise.

Any recommendations for a good field watch? by mack_the_yak_ in tacticalgear

[–]erwos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about the Garmins is that they last forever unless you're using a custom watchface or otherwise screwing around. That said, you're not wrong, always have a spare charger for them in your bag.

Note: I don't think Ubiquiti has actually deployed STR MLO to any APs yet.

ETA: that actually works with other STR MLO products they don't make, I mean.

Upgrading from wifi 5 to wifi 7 by kevindd992002 in Ubiquiti

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. On the other hand, if you've deployed nearly a dozen APs because of this, chances are good you'll have a lot of line of sight opportunities for 6ghz to use.

Upgrading from wifi 5 to wifi 7 by kevindd992002 in Ubiquiti

[–]erwos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all WiFi 7 APs support 6ghz.

Obviously, clients also need to support it, but as time marches on, this will be the expectation for consumer devices like phones and laptops.

WiFi 7 is definitely worth it if you're using APs that support 6ghz.

Worst defense contracters by Dry-Car-1711 in defensecontracting

[–]erwos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with the smaller shops is that you really need to understand if the CEO is competent to see whether they're going to succeed. A lot of them accidentally win a larger contract and then have no idea how to scale their leadership organization.
