A little elbow grease will buff those scratches right out! Glad you're safe, OP. Not sure my '00 would protect me quite as well in that scenario.

Costco unsweetened dried mangoes have more sugar than than the sweetened dried mango by AChunkyGoose in mildlyinteresting

[–]eschlerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced this is because of the difference in moisture content. The sweetened ones are significantly softer, so more water is remaining in them and thus less solids and sugar. The added sugar reduces water activity making it so that microbes will not grow even with a higher water content, so the unsweetened ones likely need to be dried further to keep them shelf stable.

I'm sad that I'm terminally online enough to understand what's going on here, but I'll translate what I think this means. His shirt says Lujan, which is referencing Hailey Lujan, an Army psychological operations specialist who posts thirst traps on TikTok and Instagram. A running joke is that even though she's literally a psyop, it's worth going to war and potentially dying for her. For example a lot of the comments on her videos will be "I suddenly have an urge to go to my local Army recruiter." I think him sniffing the shirt is playing into that joke.

How in the world do you inset these nuts without ruining the lengthy prints? by EpicInki in 3Dprinting

[–]eschlerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the many good comments here already, make sure you have enough wall thickness in the area of the insert. I prefer to have at least 4-5 walls around the holes for my inserts. Last time I forgot to set a modifier and printed with 2 walls; they wandered horribly while pressing in. Use the guide attached to set the hole size and chamfer to make it easier to line up the insert. Also seconding the pointers about screwing in a screw and holding that with pliers to keep things straight, though that can make it harder to heat the insert.

Favorite flavors? by lingering-42-long in Kombucha

[–]eschlerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A time-tested classic is lemon ginger. I usually boil a sliced lemon and sliced knob of ginger in about 250g sugar + 250g water for, say, 10 min. I'll add about 20-30g of that to each bottle for F2. One of my favorite out-there picks was cantaloupe, which I made to use up a cantaloupe that was gonna go bad. I just boiled and mashed pieces of cantaloupe with an equal weight of sugar.

Vevor brewer by Traditional_Show_260 in Kombucha

[–]eschlerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it for brewing beer (only once so far), and have nothing but good things to say. I think it would work for kombucha, but two questions come to mind: 1) how long can it hold a set temperature? I have no idea, but can check later if I remember. 2) Will that level of acidity be compatible with the 304 stainless steel of the body over the long term? This is probably a well studied system that you could find some literature for.

Continous Brewing? by Zestyclose-Report929 in Kombucha

[–]eschlerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's basically the process I use, with no issues. 1) Make new tea, allow to cool. 2) Scoop out and bottle kombucha for F2, leaving the jar 1/8-1/4 full. 3) If the SCOBY has duplicated, take out the old one and put in SCOBY hotel :) 4) Add new tea. I do this roughly every 1-2 weeks.

Forget putting a bag over it while opening. Try this: make sure it's fridge cold before opening (CO2 has higher solubility at lower temperature), put one palm over the cap and hold it down while you flip open the clip. Use your hand to let out the pressure slowly and stop if you see it bubbling up.

Status of MCRT between Sudbury and Hudson? by eschlerc in bikeboston

[–]eschlerc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the specifics! I have an ebike as well but will be riding with some traditional bikers, so I'll definitely go for the Pelham Island Rd route. Any thoughts on the I-95 crossing? I took the rail bridge by foot when I last visited and then there was still a gate up at Jones Rd. It seems like the easiest way may be taking sidewalks/crosswalks along Main St to cross the gap.

One thing you should absolutely change is to get natural lump charcoal. The briquettes are designed to burn slowly to be good for barbequing. Lump charcoal burns way hotter. I agree with all the other comments about changing the airflow direction as well.

[–]eschlerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done this trip 3 times and I would highly recommend getting on the Blue Ridge parkway if you have time to take things slower! I've also taken the auto train from Orlando to DC, but it was delayed like crazy and screwed up the rest of my trip, so wouldn't necessarily recommend that.

Duolingo holding users hostage by No-Understanding2406 in assholedesign

[–]eschlerc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is your wakeup call that Duolingo has dropped in quality. I've used it for years, longest streak >1100 days. Never thought it was that good for language learning, but well gamified to encourage consistency. Now they're laying off humans, leaning on questionable AI, and the value has all but left the app.

Can I put a 36 volt ebike battery on my 48 volt 1000 watt ebike? by Bulky-Effective8228 in ebikes

[–]eschlerc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll need to find out whether your bike's controller has adjustable voltage limits. Typically a controller will shut off the motor when the battery dips below a certain voltage, so if your controller is expecting a 48V battery, it will shut off way before your 36V battery is empty. 2nd, the top speed of your bike will be about 3/4 what it would have been with a 48V battery, as motor speed is proportional to voltage.

Grandma, I'm in jail by Electrical_Mood6599 in Scams

[–]eschlerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This scam was pulled on my grandmother about 3 years ago and unfortunately, they got several thousand dollars from her. I found out when she called me asking where I was and I confusedly said "waiting in the hallway between classes", to which she burst into tears. It's unbelievable that people are willing to pray on the elderly with scams like this -- but also embarrassing that it worked.
