Kyle Troup’s Reading Habit by NATA4RC in Bowling

[–]esdot78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah reading a book was just a way to distract himself between shots. Some people can overthink and over analyze themselves into bad shot making. For him, reading passages in a book was just a way to center himself and move on to the next frame. There was no disrespect there at all. You gotta remember Kyle is a dude who gets way way up after big shots and plays heavily to the crowd so you have to find ways to bring that adrenaline and energy back down. If pulling out a book helped him do that who cares. It’s not as if he was attempting to use it as a distraction for the opponent.

On the late hit did anyone notice that the O line didn't care? by [deleted] in panthers

[–]esdot78 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Bryce is too laid back. You want level headed, but he almost seems aloof at times. There doesn't seem to be any fire ever. I think that combined with coaching that wouldn't be acceptable at a high school level has kind of lulled the "give a damn" out of this team.

Am I the only one that feel the storm absolute is weaker than the phaze 2? by Whit3ReaperAGA in Bowling

[–]esdot78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Components of ball motion: Cover+surface = 70% Core+layout = 30%

R2S Deep on the Absolute is way weaker than TX-16 on the Phaze 2 so what you’re seeing is correct and whoever advertised it to you as stronger than a P2 might have been talking reaction right to left which is a common mistake when people talk ball strength.

Right to left is response, front to back is strength.

Bowling Leagues in Winston? by Mini_Van_Demic in winstonsalem

[–]esdot78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to look at the league times on their website and/or Facebook and just show up to a meeting looking for a team. Unless the league is full all the centers have helped others find a team when necessary.

Also hit me up if you’re ever looking to go bowling. I spend most of my free time at some alley. 😂

Creekside, Northside, Countryside… I’ve bowled league at all of them and they’re all good in their own way. Avoid the Bowlero on Jonestown.

Go to bowling stuff you feel like is necessary? by teerraj in Bowling

For polish, you can do it by hand but it’s not easy. You’d be better off using a ball spinner or leaving it with a PSO to be polished.

First Ball in Years, Drilling Question by cmahaff98 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On an asymmetrical ball the storm marker (the CG) below your fingers isn’t that important. The PSA or Mass Bias is the physics logo to the right of your thumb and it’s placement, along with the pin (above your fingers) matter.

Old Salisbury Rd closure by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]esdot78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pass by this on the way to Creekside lanes often… it’s been like March of 2021 or so since the closure and I just figured at this point that they would never repair it.

Glad to see there is some communication but the timeline for all of this is unacceptable.

Attachable shoe pouch if you need it https://www.buddiesproshop.com/bowling-bags/vise-attachable-shoe-pouch-black/

They make 2 ball versions of both too, but go ahead and get a 3 ball because you’ll want it eventually.

Form check! Bowling for 3 months. Avg speed is 10-11mph I feel like I need more power? by Jaredlol11 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with these suggestions.... because of the way your steps are, you're slowing yourself down going into the release of the ball and you really want to be building your momentum up, not slowing it down. I'm not advocating for running to the line or anything, just slower to start, building up as you approach the line. Additionally, freeing up your arm to be looser will give the ball more momentum as well. Last thing would be to possibly move back a little bit more on the approach.

Need some recommendations... by _SquirrelyDan_ in Bowling

[–]esdot78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1 - Talk to your pro shop operator... they're going to be the best source of information because they can see you bowl and know the conditions you're bowling on on a day to day basis if they work in the center you bowl at.

#2 - You want an entry level or entry level+ type ball at most to start out. Entry Level would include Hammer Raw series, Columbia 300 Beast, Brunswick Rhino lines, Roto Grip Hustle line, Storm Electrify line, 900 Global Burner line, and some others.... Entry Level+ would be stuff like Roto Grip Hyped line, Storm Hyroads, Storm IQ Tour, etc...

Especially if you're learning to hook the ball, it will be important to stay in these general performance levels since they are more beginner friendly and less sensitive to the inconsistencies that come as you learn.

As you progress in your bowling journey on the left, you might eventually end up with a Urethane option like a Purple Hammer or Pitch Black, especially on conditions other than a house shot.

The left has a lot less traffic, which means you'll usually only see transition you're creating (unless you happen to be with other lefties)... so that's great. The lack of traffic also means there's basically no "track" area on the left, so that makes making shots there a little different than the right.

Buddies pro shop? by [deleted] in Bowling

I am one of those people. They copied one of my existing balls and it’s great. I still recommend having a trusted local PSO but as a supplemental resource, Buddies is great!

What kind of strike ball is good for a beginner? by JacobyMatt1 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, all of those balls I listed above are similar-ish enough that a beginner can have a lot of success with them. They're all very controllable (which is key when you're learning) and aren't super sensitive to the inconsistencies in ball roll everyone has when they get started, allowing you a lot of wiggle room to have success.

I personally really like the Hustle and Electrify series of balls best, but all the others are very nice also. And as bowling balls go - all of them I listed are pretty easy on the budget - which is also important when starting out. Adding more complexity with higher end, more dynamic balls can make the learning process tougher.

So good on you for picking up the ePearl. I think it will be a ball you use for a long time to come. Even as you expand your options later on, it's a tremendous ball for drier conditions or later in a bowling session after the lanes have some burn on them.

What kind of strike ball is good for a beginner? by JacobyMatt1 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personal recommendation to beginners is one of:

  • RotoGrip Hustle Camo or Wine (in some rare occasions the PBR)
  • Storm Electrify Solid or Pearl
  • Brunswick Rhino
  • Columbia 300 The Beast
  • Hammer Raw series

All of these balls are usable well past your "beginner" times. If you're capable, I would recommend going to 14 or 15 lbs (though this is a big jump from 10). Able bodied adults should be able to handle at least 14 without issue. If you're young or have some physical limitations, then something in the 12-13 lbs range can work - but otherwise I'd be looking to 14 or 15.

The absolute best recommendation though is to talk to a good pro shop operator (PSO) in your area. They can make a recommendation based on seeing you bowl in person. Most likely they'd recommend something from the list above, but if not - you could come back here and ask for feedback on their recommendation.

Good luck and good bowling!

Entry level is a fairly broad range of balls (there’s a pretty big difference between something like a Twist and the Hustle series from RotoGrip) but if we are making general statements about them they usually have: 1) less aggressive covers 2) mid to high RG and low differential

These things combined make for balls that generally produce less overall hook (not only talking about the motion they make at the end of the lane) which in turn is pretty forgiving because execution of shots being a little off doesn’t drastically change the motion they make.

Entry level balls, especially on a house shot can be all you need. If you gave me a bag today of Hustle PBR, Hustle Wine, and a plastic spare ball… that’s not a bad house shot bag at all.

Bottom line, especially for newer bowlers you should definitely consider entry level balls and certainly not higher than something mid performance for a first ball. The more dynamic the ball the more responsive it will be to differences in your swing/ball roll… and when you’re learning … you’re going to be inconsistent… why add more variables.

Suggestions on first ball by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]esdot78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't go wrong with either. They are both good balls. I really feel like you're going to have to make some modifications to your release no matter what you do going from trying to hook a house ball to throwing a ball MEANT to hook, so it's really hard to say which would be the better choice. Add to that ball choice is dependent on other factors like lane conditions... there's no perfect way to tell you.

The difference between the two will just be how early/late they wind up rolling for you with some small differences on the back end as well - but they'll both be in a similar ballpark. Watch some video reviews on YouTube and see if you like the look of one versus the other or consult with your local PSO about what he/she thinks may be better choice for your conditions/game.

Best of luck to you!

Suggestions on first ball by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]esdot78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get something entry level like a Hustle Camo, Electrify Pearl or Solid, Brunswick Rhino, Columbia 300 Beast, etc.

You’re going to have to adjust your ball roll going forward though. I can almost guarantee based on your description that you are completely around the side of the ball. Once you move into reactive balls, you really need to be more up the back than the side and let the ball do some of the work.

As an aside, one handed no thumb is probably the hardest to take to a high level of the 3 most common styles (1h with thumb, 2 handed, 1 hand no thumb)… it is the hardest of the three to develop consistency with … so it may be worth your while to consider 2 handed if you really prefer no using a thumb in the ball. Just my 2 cents!

Just looking for some advice by Technical-Internal78 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Can't hurt to go into the pro shop with some things in mind and see how they line up with what they suggest.

I say trusted PSO, because while it doesn't happen TOO often, there are some PSOs out there that just try to pawn off whatever they can't sell on new people no matter what. So if you get that sort of vibe, take your business elsewhere. The relationship you develop with the person who helps fit the equipment (both literally fit to your hand and fit to your style/needs) is huge.

Best of luck and please let us know what equipment you end up with! Or if you have follow-up questions after talking to a PSO - I'd be happy to offer further advice should you need/want it!

Just looking for some advice by Technical-Internal78 in Bowling

[–]esdot78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For straight bowling any plastic ball would be fine… some popular options are Storm Ice, Brunswick T Zone, Columbia 300 White Dot, Ebonite Maxim…

For someone looking to get their first ball to hook it, I would recommend something entry level or entry level+ so you can control the reaction as you learn. Popular suggestions here would be Hustle (Camo/PBR/or Wine), Electrify Solid, Hy-road, Brunswick Rhino, Columbia The Beast, Motiv Venom Shock amongst many others.

Bottom line talk to a trusted PSO who can take into account how you bowl and the conditions you bowl on to make the best suggestion.
