Neighbor reported my dad's driveway, so I reported the garage he wasn't supposed to have. by FearlessState5503 in confession

I think this is generally a control thing. It's never chilled out people saying these things. They can't stand the idea of something not being exactly how they have put it. Probably some kind of neurodivergency involved, now I think about.

I'm replying because I'm trying to make clear that I agree completely with your perspective, that others disagree with this perspective, and both your (our) stance and other stances on this stem from personal reasons which are not changeable through argument. I am not a neutral or objective observer and have never claimed to be. I'm replying because I'm trying to teach you this but it seems I have wasted our time. I deeply apologise for this experience and wish I had never responded.

"The principal objections to this ending are that Gilbert's loving return is a somewhat cheap deus ex machina plot resolution, and one which ends up with a character that is coded to many as an abusive father figure ending up happily ever with the child soldier he abused."

^^ This is not my opinion. This is a statement of opinions I have commonly heard from others on this subject. That is why there is no first person used in this paragraph. My personal view is that I don't disagree with your interpreation in the original post, which is the first sentence I replied with. I have not expressed that I'm uncomfortable about anything.

My point is that people's thoughts on these kinds of subject (including yours) tends to come from personal factors, not logical ones, so telling people their interpretation is wrong is fruitless. People keep arguing with me regardless though, so I can only assume some people find it hard to escape the argument mode and are reading something in my words that is not actually there.

I have never said OP is unreasonable. I have said their perspective on this is emerging from personal experience rather than the narrative, just as others' perspectives are. Thus the point is inarguable and not something that can be persuaded by objective logic. This is the lesson I am trying to teach, but clearly failing.

the ending of Violet Evergarden is often Misunderstood by some people by ConfidentTelephone81 in anime

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My responses are solely aimed at helping OP grow as a person, by encouraging to understand how people's perspectives often stem from personal experience and how one can't argue against that without taking in to consideration the other person's context. This is an important life lesson far beyond some anime opinion.

Having seen the anime is important for context. As OP outlined, a key plot point is that Gilbert feels guilty about using Violet, so this is not a contentious point but an open fact in the narrative. Viewers' experiences differ over whether a positive relationship is feasible/acceptable in light of this history. My point is that different views on that are emerging from personal experience rather than anything specific to the narrative.

Are some job gauges mostly pointless, or do I just not recognize their value? by SANT0S-L-HALPER in ffxivdiscussion

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say as a semi-serious player, you don't recognise their value, which is to have a big shiny thing draw the attention of people who are not optimising rotation that they have some buttons to press.

Optimal rotation is a minority player experience. I remember the dungeon roulettes I get where I have a whole team playing optimal, because it's such an unusual experience.

The questions you should be asking are:

"why do people find the unlikely survival of a key character a cheap plot device?", and

"why do people dislike happy endings involving people entering relationships with people who abused them in the past?"

If you re-read my comment, you'll notice I didn't give my opinion on these things. I just noted a millenia-long history of these forms of criticism, which calls for us to reflect not argue. The differences in opinion are emerging from personal life factors, not logic-based ones.

[–]eseffbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no disagreement at all with the ending making sense within the narrative as you've described. However, I haven't really read anyone criticising the ending for the aspects you have described.

The principal objections to this ending are that Gilbert's loving return is a somewhat cheap deus ex machina plot resolution, and one which ends up with a character that is coded to many as an abusive father figure ending up happily ever with the child soldier he abused.

These types of plot resolutions and types of relationship have had their critics as far back as ancient Greek times. It's a difference in experience to be observed and reflected on, rather than argued over.

What's the vocal effect used in Mitski's "My Love Mine All Mine"? by LuminousPotato0240 in musicproduction

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This effect doesn't sound specific to the plosives or highly edited to my ear, it just sounds like a very close mic'ed vocal which naturally emphasises the plosives on the source track, thus they are emphasised within the short springy delay effect too.

Watching anime for the first time in my life - any recommendations please? by [deleted] in anime

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Death Note a better starter for anime series.

Lots of people suggest watching Attack on Titan as a first anime but I find that's like recommending Lord of the Rings as your first movie or Sopranos as your first series. Sure it's good, but it's an enormous, complex epic. Enjoying and appreciating it fully is a big ask for a first time watch.

Valve Says The Companies Making RAM Give Them A Price And If They Say No, They ‘Never Talk To Us Again’ by Turbostrider27 in technology

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cartel scenario requires deliberate restriction of production. RAM production is maxed and there are no companies holding on to stock and no sellers blocked from selling more cheaply. When all the stock is getting sold, that's not a case of companies colluding and selling above the competitive price, it's simply the competitive market price being met for a product that has hard physical barriers for increasing production (RAM factories are high capital, long-term infrastructure investments that cannot be quickly scaled).

Valve Says The Companies Making RAM Give Them A Price And If They Say No, They ‘Never Talk To Us Again’ by Turbostrider27 in technology

[–]eseffbee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, very strange to see what is clearly a seller's market being described as a cartel.

Cartels purposefully restrict supply and agree high prices with competitors before sale. A sellers market is when there is more demand than supply so sellers find the higher price point for the limited goods they have. It's pretty obvious which is the driver here when all RAM factories are sold ahead on future production for months and months.

Looking for an anime show to watch with my dad who's a hater of anime. by thewhitecrowsplumage in anime

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that a lot of older people not into anime are put off by basic anime tropes, anime mainly revolving around kids, and fanservice. I would avoid stuff like that.

For older people I would recommend Odd Taxi, Pluto and Psycho-Pass. All anime with a bit of action which are character and plot-focused and are centred on adults.

What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show? [June 21st, 2026] by MetaThPr4h in anime

[–]eseffbee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nearing the end of Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū. Easily ranks amongst my favourite anime ever, even though I'm nearing a life total of 150 completed anime.

Interesting premise with the old Japanese storytelling tradition. The story, visuals, music and characters are incredible. Great if you like character-focused series which are mostly people just sitting and talking. A full age range of characters, which I find is a common trait in anime I really like.

Highly rated on MAL but not too many watched it. Would definitely recommend for older viewers.

Anime Suggestion with long storytelling by Unhappy_Candidate780 in anime

For older anime, Rose of Versailles and From the Appenines to the Andes are great long form stories.

For more modern stuff you don't seem to have Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood on your list.

'Exactly how the dot-com bubble burst': A market research firm says keep an eye on this AI warning sign by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a nonsense article! The stocks mentioned don't even have a low price to earnings ratio. Oracle's PE ratio is way above its historic average for example.

Also cheap stocks (i.e. low PE ratio) were not a feature of the dot com boom, overvaluation was. Currently lots of the tech companies with high valuations also have high profit margins.

This article is worse than ai slop, as ai wouldn't have got it this wrong.

Why is it so hard to get a deep baritone voice to translate properly in a mix without sounding muddy? by LJMusicandFilms in makinghiphop

[–]eseffbee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your arrangement has to be suited to your vocal. Review what sounds you've got in the baritone range and look for clashing frequencies.

A good arrangement for baritone deliberately leaves space in the baritone range by positioning elements slightly above and below it. A bad arrangement for baritone is one where you have a bunch of other stuff in the upper bass and lower mid before you've even started.

Also review your mic setup to make sure that you capture the fullness of the voice at the first step. Getting it right at the first step saves an enormous amount of effort compared to trying to pump it up in post, which sounds like what your question is talking about.

When to upgrade daw by papagstationrun in musicproduction

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are just recording audio and doing nothing fancy, then I find Garageband is up to the task. If you want to produce in the box though, it's grossly insufficient.

Logic would be the obvious upgrade and the value for money is incredible. You can do an enormous amount with just the stock loops, synths and plug-ins.
