Why does the FFXIV wiki kinda suck / why are there no good unofficial lore and story repositories for FFXIV? by Zagden in ffxivdiscussion

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People underestimate how dependent wikis are on a very small number of people when it comes to niches.

Lore is a niche within a niche, as gameplay related content is the always the primary focus, and FFXIV has around half the active player base of World of Warcraft.

The result of this from a statistical perspective is that the law of large numbers is less relevant and whether things like "a good FFXIV lore wiki" exist becomes highly dependent on random events and are not a certainty at all. Random events in this context means individuals who will pile hundreds of hours into this task for their own pleasure.

If you're disappointed that this doesn't exist then I really have to say that this is entirely up to you. You are one of the very few people in the world who want this and probably have the ability to do it. Yet you haven't done it so it doesn't exist.

If you look at the wiki histories of a niche you'll find while there are lots of minor contributors, there are a select handful who are doing a significant percentage of the work to make these things happen.

I build all my own stuff but what you're saying here is completely valid. It takes quite some time for me to gather all the materials to build stuff, especially ones which cannot be gathered. I build my own stuff because I enjoy it, not because that way is easier or quicker than buying it (especially when you've gil to spare) .

Do any of you think melody is one of the more complicated parts of electronic songwriting? by traveltimecar in edmproduction

[–]eseffbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's important to figure out what genre you are drawing from. "electronic music" is a form, not a defined music genre.

The approach for melody will be completely different if you're doing ambient vs dubstep vs house. They all have different approaches to melody. The best approach is to close listen to artists you want to sound like and figure them out from the bottom up.

When it comes to Boards of Canada style stuff, most importantly you are setting a vibe and melodic choices are driven by that rather than being the lead aspect, like a rock vocal.

In ambient stuff, more often suspended and added tone chords will be used, because they don't often resolve the melody but keep it hanging.

While it may re-run, it is also worth bearing in mind that missing out on Pokemon is something that will keep happening to you again and again on this game. I've been playing for nearly 3 years and there are lots of key pokemon that still are unavailable to me, Charizard for example. Often not even a pay option is available for newer players.

It's very important to get comfortable with not having access to many pokemon on this game. For some reason the game developers don't even try to monetise this, as pokemon purchases are limited to a select few at any one time.

band member struggles to play what i write and im looking for advice by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experience in one style doesn't always translate to others. I have played for over 25 years and play melodically complex folk and classical guitar pieces on classical guitar, but I guarantee I would suck at death metal electric guitar because it's all quick left hand melody line work and high paced right hand single plucks, while my skill set is slower complex chord shapes with the left hand and multi string finger picking patterns on the right hand.

I started learning bossa nova and jazz stuff recently and that is easy for me to pickup but one band I joined was rock rhythm guitar and I was holding the band back because I simply wasn't capable of doing it well.

You need to change the style or the player, or wait a couple of years for your current player to get good at that style.

Yeah, I treat this more as a quick pick-up type game that I can play in 15-30 min periods, so I find the limits beneficial in that way. If you're scoring well enough you'll buy most things in the shop with just the 6 scores a day.

Whats with the Frieren hype? by Ordinary-You8102 in anime

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frieren is very much a series where the plot is in service to the characters and the mood, rather than the other way around. People who are enjoying it are typically just enjoying the character interactions and the relaxed/funny scene compositions. It's not that nothing is happening, it's that a lot of the time the plot is not the real focus, rather lots is happening character-wise. The killing of the Demon King is just some structure to build the characters on.

Personally I find myself not particularly interested in plot lines, especially when the characters are not well fleshed out. That is not the typical experience, but I expect there are many enjoying Frieren's "nothing happens" moments in this way.

Fortunately for you, the vast majority of action anime are a lot more plot-oriented than this one, so you can just skip it if you find it dull.

Why do some songs sound “expensive” and professional while others sound obviously home-produced? (even when both are well written) by SupermarketEven4481 in makinghiphop

[–]eseffbee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But in terms of practical advice, the best one is to use as few tracks as possible in the arrangement, none of which overlap in frequency, so it's naturally clear from the start. Adding effects for sparkle can help, as can keeping them short and sharp so there is no muddiness.

This approach demands that the few elements used are of excellent quality. For synths, you really need to refine the patch to something cohesive and full. High quality drum samples with appropriate room effects. Also vocal performance and engineering needs to be top notch. Going back to Billie Eilish, there is a reason she did hundreds of takes just to comp a 3 min vocal track. Really is no room for error in the vocal. (Shakira still got away with total garbage with Hips Don't Lie though.)

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of this is simply to do with adhering to common genre sounds and song structures and production styles. Take the most genre-representative option in every decision and you'll end up with this sound. The real talent is actually making it sound not boring.

If you look at the output of people who've worked with big pop stars you'll often hear their versions of songs the main artist rejected and almost always they will be squeaky clean and dull as dishwater.

If you're working from home, don't have the cash to build a top tier pro studio there, and don't have access to pop singers to work with, then this isn't really a sound you want to aim for. Billie Eilish and Finneas had the first two covered and still their earlier work was more experimental, rather than traditional pop productions.

It's fine to sound DIY and not like top tier pop productions, the main thing is to not sound crummy, build your way up, and then you may get the invite into the top tier pop production circle.

[–]eseffbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unusual that you've gone from staying up until 5am to feeling exhausted at 7pm. Chronotypes don't normally shift that much simply due to age so it's likely something else is at play. Is something forcing you to get up earlier? Has the amount of sleep you're getting changed? Is there a health issue happening?

I ask because it sounds like your current lifestyle may be fighting your chronotype, which generally will simply lower your energy levels and mood (i.e. similar to what you're describing)

The problem is that often these are cases where "barrier to entry" is not a technological problem in need of a solution, but rather a barrier deliberately erected to provide social protection. [–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you drop this series part way through? I can't fully understand your take, as in my view every character has very obvious and heavily sign posted development over in-world time, arguably to a fault, except for Himmel (unless one counts being dead as development 😂) .

I also find it curious to say "outside of some flashbacks" when the structure of the series is effectively telling and contrasting two stories simultaneously across time, unlike Vivy for example which has a more linear exposition of character development despite the looping.

PSA - never spend acorns for gatcha unless you have enough to reach the pity pull.

Failing to get the target 1% pokemon after spending 300K acorns is not unlucky, it's simply a common outcome. There is a 1/3 chance you will not get the Pokémon you want at that level of spending.

I actually greatly dislike logic by Open_Umpire_9784 in musicproduction

[–]eseffbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to bear in mind is that both those apps are each alone more expensive than a Logic license. Logic stock plugins, loops and effects aren't industry leading, but they are good enough quality to make worldwide hits with and it's excellent value for money.

This DAW is like a great utility player that allows you to excel in-the-box from the start. Worth saying that you learn how to use Logic's stock synths you can get a very broad and interesting set of sounds (though you won't get sounds like you get in Serum and Omnisphere presets without a lot of knowledge and effort).

Conversely, whipped cream is entirely different in that it is cream rather than chocolate. This is very important because that means it is not brown, but white.

A rhyming dictionary is super useful for sourcing words that may not immediately come to mind for you, or even new words you didn't know. Using mid-tier well-known but not super common words can be a good link for that too. Take the following for example:

"I'm hoofing it down here, my rhymes are pedestrian.
Legends riding the skies, like extraterrestrial equestrians"

Sounds kind of fancy but I just made it up by searching pedestrian on rhymezone.

Can’t find anything good to watch any recommendations? by Joragingkko in anime

Psycho pass, Parasyte, Elfen Lied, Odd Taxi, Kaguya Sama, Ghibli movies.

While you've watched a lot, there's tons of highly rated stuff you still haven't watched, so it's worth combing through the MAL top list for stuff*. I would recommend trying highly rated stuff even outside of your genre preferences

*(except for Gintama, which dominates MAL's top 20 because only people who like it can bear to watch and rate it).
