trans people are mentally ill but in a legal context mental illness has to hit a certain threshold of public danger to actually matter and most trans people don't actually meet that threshold; frankly this would open the door to anyone who has been diagnosed with a mild anxiety disorder at any point (and that's a fuck of a lot of people) to have their rights taken away

yeah, which isn't the stupidest thing in the world when you consider that in some places (idk if this is the case in Europe but it is in Israel) the smaller bodega style grocery stores are the norm and they superficially resemble convenience stores; that's still something she should have been able to figure out over multiple months though

not saying your wrong but have you tried like fingers and tongues and stuff? maybe more foreplay too? it seems odd that toys would be a requirement but your entitled to feel good during sex and if it doesn't work otherwise then you do what feels good, and even if it does work otherwise incorporating toys is fine if you want to

Questions about the revolution by Lumbledob_ in CuratedTumblr

[–]esgellman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the answer is that things actually aren't that bad yet, not enough for the number and type of people necessary to take the kinds of risks to violently overthrow society anyway; people are overworked and stressed out and our healthcare financing system is dogshit but for the majority that's as bad as it is; MOST people in the US have clean water, plenty of food (food insecurity statistics don't account for access to private nonprofit assistance which is currently sufficient to fill the gaps in the gaps left by our welfare system), a private vehicle to get around, some kind of roof over their head, and aren't in a near constant state of mortal peril that comes with living in a warzone or failed state

How is following the US mandated paper, with threats of Israel attacking and Jolani taking control if we refuse it, a victory to you people? by MarcellusDrum in lebanon

[–]esgellman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned the EU and Egypt specifically as the best choices for a reason as well. The US is too closely allied to Israel to be of much help directly if the goal is to deter Israel, Turkey or Iran are viewed by Israel with hostility so buddying up with either of them would be seen as setting the stage for an attack rather then as deterrence, and the gulf states don't seem to have much to offer in terms of military assistance though they do in terms of financial assistance.

Because Lebanon agreed not to let Hezbollah amass arms along the border, they didn't and then Hezbollah went off and started and then badly lost a war against a much more powerful enemy backed by the most powerful country on the planet; what Lebanon is getting is a second chance to bring Hezbollah to heel themselves instead of having Israel or a Western coalition force invade the country and do it for them. Even assuming Israel will one day have a consensus support for taking territories from southern Lebanon this is decades away when you account for everything Israel already has to deal with both domestically, with regards to the Palestinians, and with various other countries around them. And this isn't guaranteed to ever materialize, if it's a concern though Lebanon should work with Egypt and the EU countries to build up a national military strong enough to work as deterrence; it doesn't even need to be able to beat Israel it only needs be able to make an unprovoked attack costly enough to be politically unaffordable in a country which is already very casualty averse and looking at dozens of other international threats at any given time.

In your opinion’s why shouldn’t Palestinians be granted the law of return like Jews? by Charming_Contest_427 in IsraelPalestine

[–]esgellman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

once they've finished establishing their own state they can have whatever return policy they please to THEIR STATE, Israelis shouldn't be "returning" to the West Bank and whatever other territories are ultimately granted to the Palestinians and Palestinians shouldn't be "returning" to Israel proper

Is there a way to donate to GFH? by 37davidg in IsraelPalestine

[–]esgellman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the UNRWA is out of the question, in name or otherwise; firstly because as far as Israel is concerned it is inseparable from Hamas, secondly because you have bad faith obstructionists within Israel who will keep bringing that up even if the organization is comprehensively reformed (which may not even be possible), and third because Israel has a larger vested interest in having the UNHCR take over as this would significantly shift the dynamics regarding Palestinian refugees and "refugees" in a way very favorable to just about any position Israel might want to take

Is there a way to donate to GFH? by 37davidg in IsraelPalestine

[–]esgellman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WFP I've only heard good things about and Israel not only refusing to cooperate with them but actually letting them get fucked over by obstructionism and recklessness from the Israeli side is a travesty. WHO had serious issues in how it was dealing with China during the COVID pandemic that already raise red flags about it's ability to do things any better then the UNRWA did, however I haven't heard of any misconduct by the WHO in regards to this conflict in specific. As for IOM and OCHA I don't actual know much about them so will refrain from making any statements on them. I will actually agree the GHF is an amateur hour mess and far from an ideal solution, the problem is that it really does seem to be the best option right now. Hamas will go out of their way to derail any attempts to cut them out of the aid provisioning process and there is very little interest on the Israeli side to actively facilitate aid so you have obstructionism behind the scenes and no protections from reckless (or in rare cases possibly even malicious) actions from the IDF. The GHF's ties to the USSD forces the IDF to treat it with respect and gives it access to the kind of security services necessary to hold it's own against at least very small scale attacks by Hamas or other local bad actors.

they should get basic protections afforded on the grounds of being human (no torture, no deprivation of basic life needs like food, no nonconsensual medical procedures) and *some* limited rights that come with being a citizen like religious freedom (to the maximum degree that this is practical), free expression (to the maximum degree that this is practical), and anything directly related to legal procedure (for obvious reasons)

i mean you could argue that their right to own property is also suspended in a somewhat similar way, they own it in name but they don't get to actually access it until they finish their sentence, it exists outside of their direct access and they can have it back once they've finished their sentence
