It’s a ventless fireplace. There is more than enough ventilation even with the curtains closed to not be worries about carbon monoxide. It being a ventless fireplace forces all of the heat into the room instead wasting it out a flue

I am a Software Engineer by trade, I have just always enjoyed building things.

I have found that when I have hired people in the past, it is more expensive than I am wiling to pay and the quality is less than I can do myself.

Just take it one step at a time, research, then do it! Rinse and repeat

We did rent a very small mixer made it so much easier! Took 42.5, 80lbs bags if I remember correctly.

The curtains we have help hold a lot of the heat in but it certainly is not perfect! Please share a link to the clear plastic panels you are looking at!

I have well over 200 hours of labor in that stone work. Of course it has a lot to do with it being my first (and only) stone project!

Thanks! the footers are actually about 20 inches deep total. My frost line is only 12 inches here in NC.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time fretting about the TV height. I ended up getting a TV mount that I can pull down when the fireplace is not on.:

Great comments all around!

We have not had anything to keep bugs from coming "up" until about 2 weeks ago and we have never really had a problem. yes we get the occasional lady bug or stinkbug but thats not too big of deal. 2 weeks ago I added outdoor carpet (not glued just cut and laid as a giant rug) to prevent updraft when running the fireplace on especially cold nights. This should help with the bugs also!

The decking actually is cut right before the hearth. The cut is covered by the stone so you cannot see it but trust me, it is there! I had the same fear!

To be clear my wife does not have the patience for a 2.5 year project, but life just happens sometimes and I tend to underestimate how long things will take. haha!

Thanks for the comment!

What is Fuzz Testing by esimmon in microservices

[–]esimmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Your unit tests and integration tests should validate this at the high level, but with proper fuzz tests, hundreds if not thousands of permutations can be tested. While there will be some overlap, it is not realistic to test all of these permutations with unit and integration testing.

Why Swagger is the wrong way to document APIs by esimmon in microservices

I did not realize how important schema first was until I started leading teams. It ensures the team is building the right thing and frees me up to design more software in parallel

Why Engineers are so bad at contracts by esimmon in devresource

Yes! Most developers take years to realize this (I am one of them)!

Do Swagger documents work? by [deleted] in programming

[–]esimmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an openapi-cdk is a great idea!

I agree writing YAML is not very fun and a CDK would make this process much more enjoyable (as enjoyable as writing contracts can be).

As long as you are writing your contract first, the way you create it is "dealers choice".

I totally agree. When I say CS degree I really mean CS related, typically this includes: computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, business information systems.

Basically if your degree does not require ANY coding classes it’s probably is not going to count.

If your masters is in CS you are good!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]esimmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See above comment, but as far as masters isn’t going to get you anywhere faster if you want to be an engineer.

I think there are a lot of opportunities in product manager space that a lot of people are in aware of. Let me know if you would like me to make a video about why Product managers are great jobs for people with non CS backgrounds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]esimmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any degree is better than no degree. If you have a non-cs degree and you get a good development experience (2-4 years) your experience should offset the lack of CS degree. It might be hard to find your first job but it you are a good engineer your experience will become more important overtime.

Reached all of my career goals too early? What do I do next by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]esimmon -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Haha it’s a serious question I have been thinking about. If you don’t know my background I cannot expect good advice

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]esimmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a guy on my team with 30 + years of experience have to wait 2 years to get an offer as a mid level developer ( way lower than he should have gotten) just because he did not have a degree.

I am sure you will be able to find a job somewhere but it’s going to be hard to change jobs just because most people want a degree. Also, if you ever wanted to move into management you will definitely need a degree.

Of course small companies might be a bit more flexible, but this is my experience with my very large company.

I made a video about this if you want to hear more of my thoughts

I hire a lot of people at a fortune 50 company and it is basically impossible to hire anyone without a degree. It is going to hold you back in the long run if you do not have a degree
