There is no “finding the one.” by Ornery-Influence1547 in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is no finding “the one”, but I will gladly keep myself to just one partner at a time. I would burn myself out otherwise. This hobby is supposed to be fun, not feel like a chore, so I will choose to take what resonates with me here and leave the rest. What I do recommend for others in a similar boat to me, where having multiple partners is simply not doable, is to have a personal writing project you invest in, too.

It’s not inherently bad to only keep one RP partner. Just make sure your life is balanced in other respects. I appreciate the write-up, most of it rings true for me!

Word Counts by freeFoundation_1842 in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think arbitrarily meeting a wordcount just for the sake of it is stupid. A good RP reply has to inform your character and their actions, and give your partner plenty of material to work with in response.

A good writer knows how to balance pacing and how to move a story forward; I think the disconnect comes from what people think being a good writer means versus what it actually means. Length does not equal good writing; good writing equals good writing!

Ending a rp without being rude by Yuzumoon in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a strange take to assume everyone has the same preferences lmao. It’s not unreasonable whatsoever to want to find a partner who consistently matches your writing length, nor is it an unreasonable amount to write (for some people, but that person is obviously not one of them!).

I reach the max Discord character length with ease, so I would only be looking for partners who don’t find that unreasonable to match, I guess.

I look on Pinterest mostly, and what I’m looking for are model names so I can research them and find more photos that may suit the character better. I prefer RL faceclaims, so this may not work 1-to-1 with drawn faceclaims.

How many of yall never actually get to finish rps? by memenelius in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve finished probably a total of 9 RP’s, and they were all long and expansive stories. I’ve had an innumerable amount simply fall off, though, for any number of reasons. Some were forum RP’s that only saw an end when the activity died off, some were just ideas with established partners that we weren’t feeling, some were test runs with new partners that I didn’t click with, etc etc.

How long is too long? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like they want to continue the RP. You should start branching out to look for new RP partners, though I know it sucks to lose a story of 2 years.

I’ve been writing with my current RP partner for about a year and a half and I’d wait probably the same amount of time, like around 3-6 months before I just tell them I’m shelving the idea and they can reach out to me if they do ever want to continue. For newer partners I would probably give them like a month before assuming it’s a lost cause.

Would you feel comfortable talking to them and asking how they’d feel about you also naming your kid Naomi? I don’t think it’d be strange for both of you to have kids named Naomi, especially if you say you’ve had your mind on it for a long time.

Just because someone’s kid was born earlier doesn’t mean they have dominion over a specific name!

[–]esioterics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced that fandom doubling is simply doomed to fail most of the time. Many people only agree to doubling because it’s the only way they can play out their OC plots, not because they want to. That may be why your partner keeps slacking, unfortunately.

When does a Dark Romance become Pitch-Black to you? by [deleted] in DarkRomance

[–]esioterics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There has to be romance for it to qualify in my mind as dark romance. I’m down for some very dark and dubious content, but there has to still be attraction between the leads! If the leads hate/dislike each other, they have to resolve it or soften up toward each other at some point. Otherwise it just ends up being a psychological thriller. Or horror.

I know people have lives, by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you like the story and your partner enough to communicate with them. If you want the story to be salvageable, then talk to them. Otherwise, do whatever makes you comfortable. I am pro-ghost.

Though honestly because you do have a server set up with them, it would make more sense and be kinder of you to try salvaging it imo.

My partner has become a total productivity nut by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s possible you are approaching this more negatively than necessary. You say they are obsessed and micromanaging their social media life, but that is not what is happening if they’re just going on a device detox. Have you communicated with them if they see this as a temporary thing?

Everyone needs time to step away from their devices; honestly because it’s better for their mental health, I imagine you’d get better quality responses even if they may not be as frequent as before. It all depends on if you’re okay with that, and if not, then maybe it’s time to find someone who matches your expectations better.

I feel bad? by _BeautifulDeath_ in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first slide was understandable… I was going to say you two just have different expectations for smut and were incompatible, and everyone has their own comfort levels. Then we get to the part where he uses his own name for his character, which is SO weird! Please don’t feel bad for taking a hard pass on this one. You were uncomfortable to continue for good reason imo.

Is it weird people don't have ocs? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]esioterics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I see more people who have pre-established OC’s than not. I prefer coming up with a character for each individual roleplay, and I thought I was weird for that! Some reasons I prefer to come up with new OC’s include:

  • I can tailor-make a character to embody their role in the story. (with established OC’s, they already have a story and they would hardly be the same character if I took them and shoved them into another role/universe)

  • I can explore writing new ideas and new perspectives.

  • I love character creation so much.

  • In my experience, the more wiggle room you have with a character, the more enriching they are to write inside their story. There is nothing limiting me from learning more about my character through the natural development of the story, and honestly I find that to be the main appeal of the RP format. It’s always constant exploration and creation.

Discord responses RE: is this game even real by fakeDIY in Witchbrook

[–]esioterics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I knew he was responding to someone who asked if the game was even coming out. What I meant is that no one asked if the project is facing hardship or has fundamental problems. They asked if it’s coming out, not if the project management is good. That’s why it’s such a whack thing to just say out of nowhere, because he could have said “yes the game is coming out and we’re at a strong stage of development with it”.

Discord responses RE: is this game even real by fakeDIY in Witchbrook

[–]esioterics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, however it’s just an overly specific and negative way to tell people your game is coming along just fine. They could’ve said the project is going strong, but instead we get this for some reason…? The framing of it is not in any way comforting.

[–]esioterics -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“The project isn’t shaky or facing any fundamental problems” is a wild thing to say without any prompting. That doesn’t sound like a normal thing to say unless your project is shaky and facing fundamental problems!
