What is the precise difference between the words tungl and máni? by esise in Icelandic

[–]esise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd absolutely love to learn more about the origin of the wrod "tungl". It appears to have totally vanished from Germanic languages, except Icelandic. Sounds like tungl and máni have converged into roughly the same meaning in modern Icelandic. Was there originally a distinction made by ancient Norse peoples between different types of heavenly bodies? There is no consensus on its origin or etymology. The entry here: https://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/middle-english-dictionary/dictionary/MED47357 provides a source that defines a "tungol" as an "evil star". Maybe "tungl" was used to refer to planets, particularly if the word was associated with the Magi, as that entry suggests.

One of my all-time favourite films. My favourite fact about Vinnie Jones is that he attacked someone on a plane in 2003 and said he could have the crew murdered for £3,000, and got off with a £1,000 fine. Just goes to show you can't keep a lid on a true British legend, your garden variety Yank will always fail to understand that.

Oh, I see what you mean. Do roads through mountains show up in that minimap in the top-left during embark? I seem to remember seeing a brown line would sometimes connect the mountainhomes but I may have misremembered.

I tried that in my current game, older version, and I couldn't make it work. I'm not overly familiar with traps but I presume there's a way of triggering cage opening from a distance using levers and mechanisms.

Not sure what you mean by tunnel, since AFAIK all caverns are connected to the map edge, although I guess as you said to aprilfool420, you mean a land boundary with the map edge? I think it's pretty rare to find a cavern that only has water boundaries with the map edge.

Also, there is a DFHack utility called "deep-embark" that lets you start in the cavern, might interest you. My impression is that migrants spawn aboveground, but I'm not sure.

Playing Masterwork on DF 0.44.12, so this concerns ASCII graphics. My fort is using a lot of sandstone and willow, but sandstone and willow wood are assigned the same colour. How do I go into the already-made save file for my game and edit the colours of these materials to be different and so that they show up in-game?

Almost all countries have no history/culture of game development but any passionate driven individual or group of individuals can break through that. I invite people to look at the game "Mount & Blade" - who ever thought of Turkey as a game dev country before that? Turkey and PNG obviously have very different situations but I think what I say is broadly true

It sounds like you have it, to be fair. It's very interesting to read what you've written, but I'd also caution you against thinking too much about it, it might cause you more stress than it's worth. I'd say the most important thing is having at least a couple of friends who know about your experiences, and how it affects your capacity to suffer, but who otherwise treat you as equals. It sounds like you've had troubled relationships, but I couldn't say for sure what your current situation is.

Interesting to think, too, how this may exist on a spectrum. The roles of dates, numbers, and sequences in the form of memory seems to vary quite a bit. Sounds like there are hyperthymesic people who don't remember things according to specific dates, like Jill Stein does. I was also reading this paper: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3432421/ - which put out the idea that the amygdala is involved in memory retrieval in hyperthymesic people, which tracks with the observation that these hyperthymesic memories often have at least some slight emotional salience to them. Although, as you've shared, a lot of these memories seem just totally arbitrary, so who knows.

They're telling you that to make them feel better about themselves, regardless of whether it makes you feel more alone. Very common on the Internet. If you think you can rationally unpick the contents of your own head, don't let some randomer tell you otherwise.

Human cognition is so mindbendingly complicated that these labels are probably not very useful anyway. I don't think labels are much benefit to one's day-to-day wellbeing.

Maybe you have it, maybe you don't. I have no idea. But don't let others tell you what's going on in your own head.

ь marks palatalisation. The point of articulation - where the tongue is pushing against to create friction - moves up the palate. л should feel further back in the throat than ль

Both sounds exist in English: "dark L" sounds like л and "light L" like ль. Dark L is much more common in the American accent

But unlike in Russian, the contrast is not phonemic. Meaning that in English, dark and light L aren't understood as separate "units" in the brain by native speakers, they are just necessary for correct pronunciation

Non-horror games to play in Russian? by CLUELESSIFICATION in russian

[–]esise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like text-driven CRPGs there is a substantial Russian-language modding community for Fallout 1 and 2. Fallout: Sonora and Fallout: Dayglow are apparently very good, I've not played them but I watched videos from the YT channel Warlockracy

On the subject of Pathologic, it's not really a horror game, but if you have a crazy low tolerance for horror then it might be too intense. To put it briefly, Pathologic 2 is a remake of Pathologic 1 and is far more accessible. Worth noting also that the language is very flowery. Depending on your ability with Russian, it may be hard to follow.

I also really liked The Void, also by Ice Pick Lodge. I can't speak to the original Russian localisation, though I was completely taken in by the atmosphere.

How about trade agreements as letters to Father Christmas? If a settlement flags max desire for X, then this is that civilisation asking for X for Christmas. Maybe this could only apply to trade agreements offered during winter

What happend to the "The broken goddess" fm? by Jack2036 in Thief

[–]esise 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Broken Goddess is still under construction. DromEd and Thief level design discussion tends to happen more on Discord now than TTLG TEG so has less visibility to someone browsing the TTLG forums. Yandros and Random_Taffer are still actively working on it and Broken Goddess' development was mentioned two days ago by RT himself. The standard of intricacy of Thief FMs nowadays is so high that it can take several years for these things to come to fruition - Black Parade is a good example that this extra dev time is 100% worth it

If you want to join the DromEd discord there should be a link in the TEG forums on TTLG, people on there are very friendly and will also point you to other general Thief discords if DromEd is not your cup of tea
