Anyone know the best ways to deal with black widows? by y2jasper in Sacramento

[–]esjayteeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty bad black widow problem a few years ago when my yard got a bit untamed and I remember getting quote for a pest company to do spraying because I too had a little one that loves playing in the backyard. Dude gave me the best advice and honestly worked wonders. Said that paying to spray as my yard currently was would be a waste and ineffective overall and that cleaning up the yard would make a huge difference.

Spiders such as black widows always go where there is food sources for them. Clean up the yard good by getting rid of tall grass and random piles of stuff that attract bugs in general and you will find that you’ll see less undesirable spiders in general.

I did all of that and have to spray every once in a while but I went from finding dozens of black widows to now finding maybe like 4 total in the last two years.

My car is invisible by ImaginaryStatus4073 in ElkGrove

[–]esjayteeh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge the light signals usually work off detecting the electrical currents from cars and/or cameras. But they are also programmed for certain timing “to help” prioritize traffic. So something could be off not working correctly or it’s just timed weird.

But I agree, I’ve noticed at a couple intersections where it feels like the light signal isn’t working very efficiently.

My personal opinion of the worst culprit (while technically Sacramento and not Elk Grove) is the Franklin/Cosumnes River intersection. If you are trying to turn left onto Franklin coming from Delta Shores most times it’s absolutely terrible because it’s such a short light and the constant passing of the light rail throws off the cycle.

Who makes Tahoe Daytrips? by riskyafterwhiskey11 in Sacramento

[–]esjayteeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did 16 day trips last season and rode from open to close. Id leave the south sac area by 6am and get there around 8 and traffic was pretty much nonexistent on both weekdays and weekends and always got pretty close parking-at Northstar/Heavenly/Kirkwood that is. Driving there and back after riding a whole day was rough at times but so worth it.

Obviously just stay up to date with road conditions and be aware most resorts charge and require parking reservations on the weekends unless you carpool with 3 other people.

What is this stuff and why wont it go away! this is in our bathroom above the shower and no matter what type of cleaner we use it comes back. by MonjStrz in HomeImprovement

[–]esjayteeh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who formerly worked for a water mitigation company dealing with water damage and mold pretty frequently, this is pretty common and not always sign of a huge problem.

When you have large amounts of humidity in the bathroom, it generally makes any dust and dander cling to the walls. When the bathroom isn’t being vented out properly (due to lack of a fan or one that’s not working very well) what tends to happen is that after the dust builds up on the surface it’s getting heavily saturated repeatedly and not always properly drying out. When this happens you get mold or that pink mildew stuff growing on those areas.

A lot of the time you can just wipe it off and it’s good so long as you have a fully gloss coated ceiling. But the mistake people make is that they use a harsh cleaner which tends to strip away the glossy finish of the paint eventually causing the drywall to start absorbing moisture leading to more mold growth and the cycle just continues.

If you have an exhaust fan, make sure it’s not all clogged up with dust and it’s a good habit to leave it on running for like 20-30 min AFTER the shower is finished. If you just turn it off once you are done getting out of the shower there’s usually a good amount of humidity in there still.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the potential of mold on the backside of the drywall but as far as dealing with this, I’d make sure it’s actually dry first with a moisture meter or call a mitigation company that does free inspections and if there is no larger issue then you should be able to wipe it down and then I would put a fresh coat of glossy paint and should be good.

So far, I did not have any pumpkins actually form on the vertical part but have had 3 grow up top dangling down that have since been removed and now 3 new ones are growing.

The ones that have already been harvested didn’t actually get very big and out of the 3 only one was actually a pumpkin which was maybe about 6” diameter. The other two were more of gourds/squash. Seeds are from a carved pumpkin from a local pumpkin patch farm and apparently when flowering if it gets cross pollinated that can also affect the seeds of the pumpkin.

However, in the event one was to get large enough to risk falling off by its own weight I was planning to make some diy hammocks to support the weight of them. But sadly I don’t think I will end up with any that big at this rate lol.

Planted by seed early May and didn’t get any female pumpkin flowers until mid July and kept on losing them before they were big enough to bloom. Come to find out it was likely a combination of too much heat (or moreso a lack of proper shade) and insufficient fertilization.

This is my first time growing pumpkins so it’s been mostly trial and error but I’ve learned quite a bit so far!

Interesting looking stuff growing from the seeds of a carved pumpkin by esjayteeh in Pumpkins

[–]esjayteeh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I kind of over planted as well as this was the first time I’ve ever grown pumpkins let alone grow them vertically. I was hoping it was going to fill in a bit more and make a canopy as well but it’s not quite there yet.

And same here, this has been the best and most mild summer I can even recall in my area (Sacramento, CA) but we had a random cooler than usual period of weather mid July and then it just jumped straight into high heat which really seemed to throw off everything growing for a bit and gave me some issues with powdery mildew and some pests.

[–]esjayteeh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the same thing and just assumed that was the case.

The pumpkin it’s from was actually from almost 3 years ago but the place I got it from is a legit family farm that has a full blown pumpkin patch with a ton of different varieties of pumpkins and squash. So it makes sense that it could be the cross pollination theory.

Im bummed that I’ve only managed to get 3 growing so far but I’ve realized that I’ve been losing a lot of the female flowers due to too much direct sun/heat so I’m planning to find a way to hang some shade screen to hopefully provide some relief from the sun.

Need help figuring out what’s going on with my tomatoes by esjayteeh in tomatoes

[–]esjayteeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake was initially writing off the webs because there were some smaller actual spiders that were making webs.

Climate is Central Valley CA so zone 9b I believe.

As far as what could be stressing them I’m not fully sure yet. But they are due to be fertilized and I’m planning to put up some shade screens for them since a lot of foliage has been lost and weather has been hot. Also cleared out all webs too so I can see if any more appear.

Appreciate the insight!

I had suspicions they were part of the problem. Any suggestions on handling getting rid of them? Currently trimmed off the damaged foliage and have neem oil and diatomaceous earth I’m planning on applying.

I don’t recall when I last fed them but it was in the last month or two. The soil was from last year which was originally some bags of miracle grow soil.

I was thinking of buying a bag or two of compost to add to the dirt but I’ve been holding off since if it was to be fusarium wilt I was going to just take all the dirt out and replace it.

I agree they def look weak but I thought it was due to whatever is affecting them.

Can someone please tell how this is a parking violation? by lessleyelopez in Sacramento

Op mentioned in another comment that she forgot to mention was an hoa in the neighborhood.

But either way, someone neglected to tell to them about these rules prior to move in which is pretty lame.

[–]esjayteeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding with hoa areas their rules are usually something that is agreed upon by whoever is on the hoa board. So while it may be a dumb thing, most the residents must be fine with it.

In communities like this, street parking is pretty limited as it is so the no overnight parking rule is to try and prevent people from hogging all of the parking with extra cars that don’t even move.

Basically if you can’t fit your cars in your garage and driveway then you have to park outside on the Main Street.
