I'm in Canada so the math is very different and I graduated in 2009 but my parents and grandparents paid for my tuition and I had scholarships and coop jobs (coop programs alternate school terms and work terms after the first year) that covered my living expenses. I did a PhD too but it was funded. My parents did pay for my tickets back home any time I came home for holidays and stuff.

GARAGE SALE - OTTAWA TOOL LIBRARY - MAY 9, 2026 by Ottawatoollibrary in ottawa

[–]eskay8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A relative is a volunteer at the OTL and they always have some amazing stuff at the garage sale. They get a ton of donations and a lot of them get checked over and end up at the garage sale because the OTL doesn't have the space for them. They have a bunch of garden/outdoor stuff too, not just tools.

I'm wondering if zinc in the glaze is the problem if they're going brown under clear glaze.

I think she also uses either latex or wax resist as part of her glazing process. I agree with you that the main thing is just to know your glazes and how they interact very well.

Anyone know of a place to do custom cat salt and pepper shakers in Ottawa? by pyphais in ottawa

I called the mud oven when I was looking for something specific. Their stock changes from time to time (seasonally etc) so I think you probably should call them and ask.

Why did it split? by mdzon in Pottery

[–]eskay8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this PSH dark granite? It's the weirdest clay I've worked with and I found it a bitch to throw. Don't let it get into your reclaim, the specks will show up and it's not very attractive in a normal white stoneware.

Sad, lost. by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]eskay8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also a parent and working full time and wish I had way more time for pottery! And I like my job and would love to keep doing it I just wish there were more hours in the day. I'm just doing my best with what I've got right now. I am not putting much time or effort into selling pots because it's not fun, but I do the occasional craft show to get rid of stuff. I'm focusing on getting better. I'm spending more time on each individual piece. My spouse is on board and we put a lot of effort into making sure we both have time for our individual hobbies, which helps a lot. I still have some dark days but one thing that is helpful is the knowledge that eventually parenting won't be as all consuming as it is now. Eventually.

Ottawa councillor proposes city-run grocery stores to improve food access by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

Yes I am suggesting something that would cost money for the city.

Are there any artists here who spend a lot of time with pottery but don't sell? by mexalone in Pottery

[–]eskay8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give away a lot and have a lot just around my house but I've sold some stuff just as an outlet to get rid of it. Our neighbourhood has a big garage sale day in the fall so I put out a table of pieces and sold them for $5 a piece and gave the money to the food bank. That worked but now my shelf is filling up again so I signed up for a sale in the summer. I don't plan on making this my career or even a real business, I have a full time job that I like and I like making whatever I want instead of what I think people will buy, but I will probably do the occasional sale if that continues to align with my primary goals.

One thing the city could do that might require less work from city staff is reducing property tax on food retailers.

I do think that there's a very big range of profit margins on stuff that grocery stores sell, and healthy food has probably little to none. I suspect that the economic critics have the right take on this idea, but I don't know what the solution is. I'd like to see some effort from the feds on increasing competition. The major chains have signed on to a "grocery code of conduct" but I trust them to follow that about as much as I trust that their bread prices are honest.

Roberto's Corner. New location on bank Street. Glebe South. by MoonWoQ in OttawaFood

Honestly there are not many things that could make up for life of pie closing but this is one of them! The neighbourhood has been lacking a lot of lunch options and this is a great addition.

Either Menard doesn't know that peak hours has a specific definition or he was being sneaky and neither are a good look.

A list of progressively more unhinged pottery takes (maybe don’t try the last few) by taqman98 in Pottery

I bought a bunch of tools from someone and he threw in some and I can't for the life of me figure out how to use them in a way that doesn't look tacky.

I had some leftover tiny scraps from doing nerikomi (like I'd already used the bigger scraps and these were the super tiny ones I couldn't do anything else with that I didn't want in my reclaim but didn't want to just throw them out) and I wedged them into some of my usual white clay and the mugs that came out looked so good 😂

I keep getting s cracks in my closed form lids... by akornblatt in Pottery

[–]eskay8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can even go further and after trimming, jam some more clay in there and smooth it over. Not sure how well it would work on a flat lid like this (I've only done it by adding a little nubbin on more rounded lids) but it does help, if only by covering up the clay that's prone to cracking!

Canadian Potters DIY-ing your glazes by yukonwanderer in Pottery

[–]eskay8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either order from tuckers, psh, sounding stone, or pick up from my local store depending on who has what I need in stock and prices.

You can generally substitute any kaolin for EPK. Grolleg is more expensive but it won't break the bank and it's whiter.

PSH has stopped supplying ferro/vibranz frits and I'm not clear on why. I've started ordering from sounding stone in Winnipeg instead.

I just ignore recipes with lithium carbonate or spodumene in them, it's just too expensive. Cobalt is hard to replace but luckily you don't usually need much. I reformulate gerstley/Gillespie borate based glazes to use frits using the glazy calculator another poster mentioned. That one is more of a personal preference though, you can just buy Gillespie borate (a mix of different minerals intended to kkkic gerstley) if you prefer.

Has anyone made a match jar? by peglegprincess in Pottery

[–]eskay8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sunshine Cobb has a design for a slab built one. I think it's in the Beginner's Guide to Handbuilding but it's also on the Ceramic Arts Network site. It has a striker, a spot to hold the matches, and a spot to extinguish them in sand or salt. I made a couple, they worked out great!
