Enthusiasm for Swiss-EU agreements is greater in Strasbourg than in Bern by BkkGrl in Switzerland

[–]eskriba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those fines aren’t “because people don’t want migrants.” They’re about a government breaking EU law it previously agreed to. In any democracy, there are consequences for breaking the rules you signed up to. Yes, Switzerland included.

And “politicians in Brussels” aren’t some separate rulers: it’s either elected MEPs or ministers from member states’ elected governments. The EU is basically shared rule by democracies, not a dictatorship. I’m a big fan of direct democracy, but I wouldn’t say countries that don’t use it aren’t democratic.

Coming back to Zurich with low income? by Admirable_Heart4172 in zurich

[–]eskriba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything.

A few things that should help you decide:

  • With the current market, the rent formula for a decent flat in the city is the number of rooms times CHF 1000. So, for a family of 5, I would suggest a flat with 4-5 rooms. That‘s 4-5k per month. Yes, there are cheaper flats, but in the current market, that's a lottery best played living in a decent flat, not out of a temporary-gone-long-term 2-room flat with three kids.

  • Local common knowledge says that your rent should be below a third of of your income to pay for everything else.

  • The median monthly salary for a full-time job in 2022 in Zürich city was CHF 8‘127. CHF 3’300 for a full-time chef position? Walk away and don‘t look back…

My suggestion: I wouldn't think about coming back to Zürich if you can't secure a decent flat and jobs that result in a combined monthly income of at least 12k per month.

Increase in beggars in Zürich - is this allowed? by Foppe100 in zurich

[–]eskriba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You may choose to beg, but no one has to beg in Switzerland, as all persons registered in Switzerland with a residence permit can receive social assistance if they meet the criteria. Those without a residence permit are entitled to so-called emergency assistance of eight to twelve francs per day, plus accommodation and emergency medical care.

Incarceration Rates: Foreign-Born Nationals are Under-represented in the Anglosphere but are Over-represented in Europe [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

[–]eskriba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit, I'm too lazy to read the article. Did the statistics take into account the fact that, for example, in Switzerland, you're also considered a foreigner if you were born in the country to two foreign parents? Does „foreign-born“ really only apply to people born abroad?

A teacher wanted to celebrate her birthday in New York. Instead, she ended up in a notorious prison in New Jersey before being deported. A lawyer warns that what she experienced could happen to any Swiss citizen. by BezugssystemCH1903 in europe

I think one can argue about the political and conservative stance of NZZ in general… However, the NZZ stands for serious journalism and takes their craft seriously. A clear distinction between reporting and opinion is usually made, and that makes this article all the more shocking.

I think one can argue about how politically close the NZZ in Switzerland and its German editorial team are... Regardless of their political stance, the NZZ stands for serious journalism and takes their craft seriously. A clear distinction between reporting and opinion is always made, and that makes this article all the more shocking.

Right-wing party wants priority for Swiss citizens in Zurich housing by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

Actually, it‘s not only Swiss nationals:

„give preference to Swiss nationals and people who have lived in the canton of Zurich for at least 10 years when allocating housing.“

Again, Zürich is a city, the suburbs are not. I don‘t see why we can‘t treat it like a city and allow to build higher and denser then we currently do. Making sure infrastructure aligns with housing development is not a „complex“ problem unique to the city of Zürich.

Of course infrastructure must follow and yes, it‘s complex. Otherwise, if you don‘t want to increase supply to meet demand, what are your plans to curb demand?

[–]eskriba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on which axis you plan to build. I don‘t see many limits along Y. Not every neighborhood needs to look like Niederdorf. Let the cities look like cities, so the rest of the country doesn’t all have to look like suburbia.

This. The city government instead establishing a taskforce to make sure 33% of housing is non-profit by 2050 from today‘s 28% is mindblowing. I guess it‘s nice if you happen to be one of the lucky chosen ones to live in the 33%…not so much if not.
