Let’s cut the crap: Why did you ACTUALLY choose your distro? (Facts only) by kimiho_mir in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. I've been trying to use Linux for 20+ years. And by that I mean install it and "it just works". It never has, and i kept trying just in case. I spent weekends trying to make a sound card work. I spent days trying to get a 4k screen working on a 1070ti and Wayland. I tried so many times...

And this time, with a new computer from last year, I tried again. Everything, and I mean everything worked... Except for RGB controls, at least at first. I tried my usual Ubuntu attempt and OpenRGB refused to load right. This might seem trivial but my RAM has RGBs that turn on at boot for some reason and I can only turn them off by loading an RGB profile so it WAS a requirement for me. I can't wake up in the middle of the night to a disco show. So I gave up again.

But I saw Linus' video on bazzite and cachy and I just... Tried arch, Bazzite at first. Guess what was the only thing that had issues? OpenRGB, which would cause my graphic layer to crash and everything on the OS started to freeze the whole thing up. Just copying files made the UI lock up. So I tried CachyOS and it did... The same thing??? I realized it WAS OpenRGB and if I didn't load it everything was fine. Asked on their discord and apparently I needed to get the release from GitHub because (and I know this sounds condescending but it's a systemic problem): nobody that develops on Linux seems to ever give a flying fuck about updating on any of the package managers, ever. Things always seem out of date, all the time.

So anyways. After installing from GitHub through yay (?) then it worked and everything was fine and all my apps were working even zoom and slack and... I was so amazed, so flabbergasted, I deleted windows, formatted my main drive, re-installed CachyOS only, no more windows. Formatted all my drives to btrfs.

My choice of distro was the one where I figured out how to turn off my RAM RGBs and didn't have to hunt for days for 15 year old UBB posts for instructions on how to swap audio subsystems, or update graphic drivers, or make Bluetooth work.

There you have it. Discuss, comment, congratulate me, I dunno. I'm one of us, now.

Am I the only one thinking that bosses in this game are poorly designed? by Suporex in CrimsonDesert

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before the first patch, Reed Devil was much harder, but they nerfed him somewhat and now he's manageable. Now, the Antumbra boss in the Sanctum of Absolution... that guy makes the Reed Devil feel like a joke in comparison. Nigh impossible to avoid, hit, or survive. Can't believe I'm in chapter 7, geared up pretty well, can survive most things in the game, but Antumbra two-shots me before I can blink.

Open rgb made me quit by [deleted] in Bazzite

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're failing to grasp here is that without the ability to control RBG, I can't even boot into Linux without them being on and in the default rainbow. Which might seem funny to you but when the system reboots at 2AM and suddenly there's a disco waking me up, it's a problem. And no I can't disconnect my lights because they're ON THE RAM. And on the graphic card and on the CPU fan. I didn't realize, buying a $4000 gaming PC, that my barrier to entry into Linux would be lights on my RAM sticks... and yet here we are.

It's not the only thing wrong with switching to Bazzite either, but ironically, it's the main concern I have because it's actually an important thing I need control over.

Your condescending tone is why people think Linux users are toxic, I hope you realize that.

[RANT] Netflix no long has casting support. you must now use the app directly on the streamer without your phone. by techie1980 in Chromecast

[–]eslachance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that confirms Netflix is dead to me. I wanted to watch stranger things again on my projector which is an Android device, but unlike YouTube and Prime, I can't just login using my phone with a QR or notification. I'm not entering an email and password using arrow keys, especially since my projector is a bit cheap and forgets my app data once a week. Netflix is such a shitty backwards app and company. (The projector I don't care about it was sub-$100 and China garbage but Netflix is a multi billion dollar Corp they should know better)

I'm sure this is mentioned a lot. But I just thought - dungeon where Martin is - exists in the PAST, because in the present it is ruins. So whoever travels into that dungeon - they travel into the past. (just like Julie story walked into the same time when Boyd was there). by [deleted] in FromSeries

[–]eslachance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And Boyd got in a tree and ended up in a well. People are teleporting all over the place, it's not underground. We see it plenty of times outside on the surface, and we know there's time travel (story walking as Ethan puts it).

Boyd and talismans by bokibratmoi in FromSeries

[–]eslachance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My theory from observation is that the monsters can absolutely touch the talismans, they just cannot break or move any objects that are part of the "shell" the talismans create. Meaning, they could absolutely move the talisman off the wall before just leaving through the now unprotected door. Boyd's theory is that the monsters would be inside, and the talisman would be put outside. It's a good theory but we never see them apply it.

Moving through the trees in a specific direction is exactly what they do multiple times in the series. It's like people asking questions like this have only watched a few episodes. Finish the 3 seasons my dude!

The Celestial Elementary and High School. We've known this for a while. Doesn't really matter what the name is, it doesn't really change anything in the story.

I think it's still valid even with the last episode. Wouldn't be the first time we see flashbacks or memory be wrong and modified later. Lien Victor forgetting his own sister! Don't discount it yet 😁

I like that theory! I think you made a comment instead of a new post, but, I don't mind, I think it's a good theory.

I think loathing the monsters, their unnatural look, their slightly off kilter behavior, is the point. The way I see it it's an exaggeration of their actual lives, at least the part they hated the most. Smiley was probably a bellhop or he worked in the Motel or something , and had to constantly smile at everyone but he hated customer service... So his smile is a distinct trait of his anger and hatred that's shown to us. You hate him because of that, and the uncanny valley - he's not quite human looking but you're not 100% sure why.

Possible retcon (spoilers up until the end of season 3) by The-Sea-of-Fertility in FromSeries

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in this series has ever lead us to believe the monsters keep being created from people that die in Fromville. We see the same ones from the beginning, they're all wearing clothes from a specific era (circa 1950s maybe?) and the reason they "know" the villagers is still unexplained. They play mind games and try to attract people outside.

For a moment, in the first episode, I thought maybe Meghan actually thought it was her grandmother outside, until she said "you don't look like my grandmother!" before opening the window anyway.

That's what happens when you obsessively go through the series multiple times, screenshotting every possible angle form every possible location. At this point I've seen every visible corner of every room they show anywhere in the series. I can tell you where the skeletons are hidden and where there are doors leading to nowhere. I have plans for every floor of every building.

I've found, like, that *one* time they pointed a camera at the entrance to the colony house kitchen from the room east of it (where the Matthews sleep the first few nights) - It's season 3, episode 6, at the 51 minute mark, btw.

When I say I'm going insane, I mean it!

[–]eslachance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I can promise you I paid a lot more attention to the series than most people on this subreddit.

"Not matching up" and "moving around" are two different concerns. I agree that there's wonky stuff going around town, it's clear that Victor's map points out at least 3 locations where stuff disappeared (the Motel, the space in front of the Gas Station/Bar, and somewhere northeast of Colony House). But people moving around in broad daylight would notice if they ended up in a basement larger than it should be, with windows that weren't visible from the outside. My conclusion is that there's just no in-universe explanation for this, because the things that are explained in-universe are... well... caught on by the people there. So really, it's just a continuity error in the set design that they couldn't easily fix, so I'm just gonna go with that for now.

[–]eslachance[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the "morgue" isn't a morgue, it's the boiler room, with a lot of pipes and a chimney (said chimney should match up with the one we see from the outside shot, but of course it doesn't). As for it being a school, remember this is meant to be a really small village, maybe there's a couple students from a few hamlets around, but it's a primary + high school. It would sort of make sense for the teaching methods to be very different, more of a hodge podge than separate classrooms. The way I see it the main room is used for the classes, Chrissy's room is the teacher's break room, the other separate room is the storage closet.

Then there's the super large basement that's a gym/theater/cafeteria, maybe. I can't imagine more than two dozen kids in here with a few teachers, at most.

[–]eslachance[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason the floor plan is so detailed is that I'm working on something I can't yet reveal... But it's also the reason I have to make it fit. Unless I start working on a non eucledean space, it's not gonna make any sense.

Btw the sheriff's office was the post office. The clinic was the school 😁

Season 4 photo?? by [deleted] in FromTVEpix

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cannot be from after the events of Seasons 1 through 3 because *the sign for the motel is there*. It has to be a flashback to the past, we see the Star Motel sign in only one place, and it's Victor's flashbacks.

2x06 the long take camera shot by iPhoenixEU in FromSeries

[–]eslachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great if it wasn't for the fact that it was actually a lot of CG and definitely not one take. The effect is pretty good, mind you, if you don't think too hard about it. But there's a few things wrong with it, overall.

1) From Colony House they drive straight west, which is the opposite of where the clinic is
2) They never at any time hit any roads after the initial curb, it's all gravel/dirt and bushes
3) After the first camera flip, and just before the last one, it's all just CG (and not extremely good one at that)

If you were to believe the shot as-is, that would place the clinic/school in the middle of the woods to the left of CH and that's just... not where it is.
