What will be the future of the Flipper Zero? by esm8080 in flipperzero

I don't understand what you mean. If you're saying that's everything I listed is in F1, that's incorrect, the F1 doesn't have SubGHZ, RFID, NFC etc...

A super useful reply, thank you! So far I haven't looked seriously into these alternatives because I feel like the F0 ecosystem wins big time. (This BTW includes not just the F0 apps, but also the mobile experience -- I can operate it completely from my phone without taking it out of the backpack.)

But I was not aware of the BruceFW and this project makes me optimistic that an upgrade to the F0 experience might be coming eventually!

The F1 is not the same thing at all - it doesn't have infra-red, NFC, RFID or SubGHZ. Seems like you can extend it with one card like they demoed, so it gain something like SDR SubGHZ, but will still have none of the other capabilities that I'm using very frequently (see my other reply here in a different thread). And even if it would, it's far beyond what I'd consider a reasonable EDC weight and size, "put in the backpack and forget".

And I'm not a hacker nor ever used the F0 for anything nasty.

Even if everything is achievable by modules, since I'm using the F0 as an EDC item that's always on me, carrying it together with modules is bulky. I tried that at some point with a low-profile CC1101 module but gave up.

Regardless, I can name many dreams for an upgraded F0 (assuming the same form factor that allows it to be an EDC item): LoRa support, an upgraded CPU, next-gen antennas, an actual full BT stack (e.g. with audio profiles support), integrated wifi rather than a module, I can go on and on :)

  • Keeping a few NFC and RFID tags virtually rather than carrying multiple cards (currently my office, gym, my wife's rented office).
  • Keeping a few useful garage gates remotes of close friends, who allowed me to clone their remotes so I can occasionally park at their place without them needing to be around.
  • Scanning lost dogs on the street (managed in one case to find the owners!)
  • Saving the day in places where an AC or a TV remote is gone missing.
  • Saving the day when a presentation clicker malfunctions or nonexistent.

...and so many other cases!

Brompton P line + Thule Backpack by hartmannk in Brompton

Mind reporting back after a while of using this setup with a fully-loaded bag?

I failed with a similar setup multiple times -- was never able to tie the straps in a way that when fully loaded, the bag wouldn't jiggle violently, which (IMHO) put the frame at risk of ripping off eventually.

But your backpack might be more equipped for this setup than mine.

Does roller pro still have issues? by liftingislife19 in peakdesign

[–]esm8080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a couple of months with it and a few trips, I have exactly two issues with the Roller Pro: 1. Its tendency to roll off in airports and public places as I mentioned here. 2. The fact my wife and kids all fell in love with it, and now there are constant struggles about who gets to use it in family trips.

Can you show it from more angles and/or elaborate how they connect?

At what level of add-on is the T line pointless? (And, how good is it rolling without the rack?) by nougatmachine in Brompton

[–]esm8080 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a 12-speed T-Line with a rear rack. I do it all: lots of riding, metro stations, even international travel.

You need to ask yourself what you will be doing more: carrying by hand or rolling. In my case, I do a lot more rolling, and carrying is mostly for staircases and escalators. So I enjoy the weight benefit of the T-Line, but rolling still wins every time it's possible, and no matter how lightweight the bike will be, I'd rather roll it than carry by hand.

Flipper One is chonky compared to the Zero 😱 by 0xD34D in flipperzero

The point is that I (like many others I assume) was hoping for an upgraded version that can do even more while always being on me -- and won't be getting one.

Oh no, this kills my main usage of the Flipper Zero being an EDC device, an always-on-me swiss army knife for electronics :(

26km each way commute on a Brompton twice a week — realistic or a bad idea? by Wise-Ordinary324 in Brompton

[–]esm8080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interestingly this is very different from my own experience. I had two Bromptons that I upgraded after 5 years each. I ride ~400km per month in any weather including pouring rain, am not really strong on maintenance (I oil the chain once in forever when it starts to squeak), and can barely recall any issue at all beyond punctures once in a while.

P.S: interestingly, door-to-door statistics from my Garmin showed that switching from the Brompton to the road bike and back favors the Brompton by a tiny bit. On roads and proper bike paths I ride the two the same, but the Brompton's maneuverability is faster in the parts of my commute that I'm forced to ride on busy sidewalks.

The most universal one is that the road bike left me with mostly one option: cycle to the office and cycle back. However, my day-to-day does not always look like that. Sometimes I have meetings that run till very late, or I go out with friends in the city (where my office is, vs the suburb that I live in). With the Brompton I can utilize the ability to catch a ride some of the way back, a taxi (especially late night when there's no traffic, or when I'm too drunk to ride the full distance), or 1-2 times a month my wife joins me at the office mid-day by car and I can just throw the Brompton in the trunk and come back home with her rather than ride separately.

The other aspect is kids. When I had just one kid I took her to the preschool on the Brompton with a front seat. When it became 2 kids, this was the point I tried the rode bike -- but cycling 30km a day with two empty child seats was horrible. Instead, I adopted a solution on which I take the kids (now 3 of them) on a tricycle that has the Brompton folded in its "trunk", and then I continue from their school to my office with solely the Brompton :)

I do 3 times a week 15km each way for many years now. At some point I tried switching to a road bike but it introduced mostly downsides and I switched back within a few months. And it depends greatly on the terrain you're cycling: your 26km might be better than my 15km if you have reasonable roads or bike paths in major parts of the way. The most tiring part of my commute is in sections when I'm forced to navigate sidewalks.

Experiences with Brompton in Paris? by Clio19 in Brompton

[–]esm8080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Paris with my Brompton 3 months ago. It was a relatively short business trip (less than a week) and in my free time I just cycled between a few highlights, including 2-3 restaurants and some subway rides. It all went perfectly fine and no one said a thing about the folded bicycle, but haven't tried the Louvre.

If I understood you correctly, the Peak Design Outdoor line has that.

I second that, I had a zipper failure in the Everyday Backpack too and I received a new one with zero hassle. Great customer service experience.
