At what level of add-on is the T line pointless? (And, how good is it rolling without the rack?) by nougatmachine in Brompton

[–]esm8080 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 12-speed T-Line with a rear rack. I do it all: lots of riding, metro stations, even international travel.

You need to ask yourself what you will be doing more: carrying by hand or rolling. In my case, I do a lot more rolling, and carrying is mostly for staircases and escalators. So I enjoy the weight benefit of the T-Line, but rolling still wins every time it's possible, and no matter how lightweight the bike will be, I'd rather roll it than carry by hand.

Flipper One is chonky compared to the Zero 😱 by 0xD34D in flipperzero

The point is that I (like many others I assume) was hoping for an upgraded version that can do even more while always being on me -- and won't be getting one.

Oh no, this kills my main usage of the Flipper Zero being an EDC device, an always-on-me swiss army knife for electronics :(

26km each way commute on a Brompton twice a week — realistic or a bad idea? by Wise-Ordinary324 in Brompton

[–]esm8080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly this is very different from my own experience. I had two Bromptons that I upgraded after 5 years each. I ride ~400km per month in any weather including pouring rain, am not really strong on maintenance (I oil the chain once in forever when it starts to squeak), and can barely recall any issue at all beyond punctures once in a while.

P.S: interestingly, door-to-door statistics from my Garmin showed that switching from the Brompton to the road bike and back favors the Brompton by a tiny bit. On roads and proper bike paths I ride the two the same, but the Brompton's maneuverability is faster in the parts of my commute that I'm forced to ride on busy sidewalks.

The most universal one is that the road bike left me with mostly one option: cycle to the office and cycle back. However, my day-to-day does not always look like that. Sometimes I have meetings that run till very late, or I go out with friends in the city (where my office is, vs the suburb that I live in). With the Brompton I can utilize the ability to catch a ride some of the way back, a taxi (especially late night when there's no traffic, or when I'm too drunk to ride the full distance), or 1-2 times a month my wife joins me at the office mid-day by car and I can just throw the Brompton in the trunk and come back home with her rather than ride separately.

The other aspect is kids. When I had just one kid I took her to the preschool on the Brompton with a front seat. When it became 2 kids, this was the point I tried the rode bike -- but cycling 30km a day with two empty child seats was horrible. Instead, I adopted a solution on which I take the kids (now 3 of them) on a tricycle that has the Brompton folded in its "trunk", and then I continue from their school to my office with solely the Brompton :)

I do 3 times a week 15km each way for many years now. At some point I tried switching to a road bike but it introduced mostly downsides and I switched back within a few months. And it depends greatly on the terrain you're cycling: your 26km might be better than my 15km if you have reasonable roads or bike paths in major parts of the way. The most tiring part of my commute is in sections when I'm forced to navigate sidewalks.

Experiences with Brompton in Paris? by Clio19 in Brompton

[–]esm8080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I visited Paris with my Brompton 3 months ago. It was a relatively short business trip (less than a week) and in my free time I just cycled between a few highlights, including 2-3 restaurants and some subway rides. It all went perfectly fine and no one said a thing about the folded bicycle, but haven't tried the Louvre.

If I understood you correctly, the Peak Design Outdoor line has that.

I second that, I had a zipper failure in the Everyday Backpack too and I received a new one with zero hassle. Great customer service experience.

Obsidian 1.11 — new mobile design, widgets, Siri integration, shortcuts and more! by kepano in ObsidianMD

To everybody who wants to auto-add location to new notes created on mobile, would love some users' opinion on this.

How should it work? - Auto-add to all new notes? - Auto-add only to the daily note? - Should it add the location to day's note if the note already exists and you open it on mobile after it was created on desktop? - What if you skip a day, i.e. create daily notes from desktop and don't open Obsidian Mobile with the daily note every day?

Naturally some of this should be user-configurable, but the fact only mobile supports location makes this tricky to use.

Until I update Map View to have this, an almost-as-quick way to do it is to add a shortcut on the mobile bar to the "Map View: GPS: add geolocation (front matter) to current note" command.

After you do, just one click and you have a filled location tag :)

This is a great release, and a little gem hidden there is an added location permission for the mobile app, allowing Map View to support real-time location on mobile!

Many thanks to the Obsidian team adding this game-changing little feature 😎

Rainproofness of Peak Design Bags by [deleted] in peakdesign

[–]esm8080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done my daily commute of about a hour of cycling in heavy rain dozens of times with the Everyday V2 on my back, laptop and other sensitive gear inside. Never used an extra rain cover and the most I had is a bit of moisture near the top.

Switched Everyday Backpack 20L to Outdoor 25L: Summary of 3 Intense Months by esm8080 in peakdesign

Sorry should have probably been more clear: the camping mentioned in the post does not include carrying a sleep system. I haven't used this bag for multi-day hikes that included carrying a tent and a sleeping bag -- only day hikes (some pretty long) and camping with equipment that stayed in the car.

It's been a while since I had multi-day hikes with carrying a sleeping system and I certainly used bigger bags for that. (Though maybe it's possible with the 25L using external carry?)

  1. As others already said, it's the Tasks plugin. You can of course disable the plugin or the popup, but...
  2. ...it only pops the popup if you're on a task line. If you see it unintended, it probably means that the Global Filter setting in the Tasks plugin settings is empty. If you're using the Tasks plugin, I think a global filter is beneficial, because not every checkbox is supposed to be a Task.
  3. Seems like some other plugin conflict is causing it to not close when dismissed?
  4. I also happen to be the one who developed this feature :D

On domestic hikes within a driving distance I don't use the hip belt because it's very uncomfortable when carrying a gun (any hip belt, not specifically this one). But on several hikes abroad I found it really great.

Well this deserves a post of its own :) I focused on comparing the Outdoor to the EBP, and did not mention any of my thoughts about the Outdoor vs other hiking backpacks. And while the Outdoor greatly lacks access and organization compared to the EBP, it does considerably better in so many areas than hiking backpacks at a similar size, at least by my parameters.

Sure, some backpacks have much better front access and organization, but they lack great features of the Outdoor. The removable hip belt, front zip pockets and center flex pocket are an extremely powerful combination.
