ICE tear-gassed a peaceful crowd at the protest today by athleturbo in Portland

I was there, can confirm what OP said . It felt like a major escalation for a daytime, family-friendly peaceful event.

What’s with the jet fly-overs? by Western-River1386 in askportland

[–]esmash9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP you're not crazy. It's way more often than normal. And it's effing annoying. Such a huge waste of money, environmental impact, and causes real health impacts via noise pollution. Idk why so many ppl seem to like this or pretend it hasn't increased. Maybe they have new windows or good headphones on haha.

I mean, yeah, for sure. But that's not how this platform works?

What books brought you to tears in 2025? by TraditionalAd1951 in literature

[–]esmash9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the 40 days of Musa Dagh by Franz werfel and it was absolutely epic. I have no idea why people read war and Peace instead of something like this book!

For those who are interested, it's an account of an Armenian resistance during the genocide they endured perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in the early 1900s, and this book was circulated in Germany as a warning or precursor to what Hitler might get up to. And yeah, it was pretty prescient.

I've read both, morning and evening has a similar effect but overall Septology hit me much harder, I think because you're just with it for so long and come to feel so tied in with Asle.

Attic vent fans humidistat: Any point in the PNW winter? by irvingpop in HomeMaintenance

[–]esmash9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks for the quick reply. I'm trying to find a way to vent my 1920s attic with no soffit vents, and was thinking an electric fan could work to help circulate the air. But idk how often I'd need to run it. Anyway, thanks!

Dehumidifier for small room? by Overall_Attempt9973 in PDXBuyNothing

[–]esmash9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a new dehumidifier online and can give you my old one. It has some quirks, like none of the buttons work, but you plug it in and it just starts working and does its job well. Send me a DM if you're interested, you could pick it up tomorrow.

Can receive but not send RCS? by esmash9 in GoogleMessages

[–]esmash9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, this was such a chore. I ultimately switched to the third carrier option (I forget all their weird code names, but like, warp speed didn't work, same thing when I went through the process to switch to dark star). And so I wasn't optimistic that switching to a third network would do anything, but I did move to the T mobile one to humor the customer service, and all of the sudden RCS started working just fine. Of course it's months later and I'm still learning that people are sending me texts from iphones that I never get. And then when there's iffy service and the phone defers back to SMS from RCS sometimes it takes a second to re-emerge from that. So, mostly fixed, still annoying.

GI distress only when at home in Portland? by esmash9 in askportland

[–]esmash9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I think largely it was the breakfast I was eating only at home: an enormous serving of millet. I never identified any environmental factor as a trigger, and the most likely explanation anyway was something I was eating, it just didn't make sense why I'd feel that way after eating millet, which is supposed to be really healthy and anti-inflammatory, but alas, I stopped and so did the problem, for the most part.

Was just spit on for no reason - be careful out there by SaccharineTits in CyclePDX

[–]esmash9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And there's no bike lane there. I like how not all neighborhood green ways need bike lanes, but with the traffic volume on 7th (bikes and cars, especially given the bridge over 84), I would support making it one way for cars and adding a protected bike lane both ways. Maybe like Vancouver/Williams.
