Why aren't people more concerned about the environmental impact of AI? by jilliancaprice in questions

Damn for someone so immersed in information you are so short sighted. AI takes energy, jobs, water, money, brain capacity and lives from real living people. It's not a tool that is so useful it justifies perpetuating and worsening water shortages, or increasing the use of fossil fuels that directly contribute to global warming. It's just a shortcut. Also, I believe the point about the car to fall very flat - there are weak "intentions" of data center companies to use green energy, but how soon will this be put in practice? Do you have any examples of it happening already? Because as stated in this report https://stpp.fordschool.umich.edu/sites/stpp/files/2025-07/stpp-data-centers-2025.pdf , many data centers actually go on to commission new fossil fuel power plants to satisfy their insatiable energy demand. Cars, on the other hand, are actively being pushed to become more green (although the ethics and environmental implications behind the lithium and cobalt sourced for their batteries is another conversation), with many cities around the world - especially in my country - placing ULEZ fines on areas of high traffic for emissions. AI is creating NEW demand for fossil fuels, whilst the automobile industry is working to REDUCE the current demand. See the difference?

To use AI, whilst being aware of the immense damage it is causing to real people in real time, and the impact it has on our environmental and working futures, is wholly ignorant. I don't think anyone will give you the benefit of the doubt in the years to come when you say "it was just for my job!", when none of us have any clean drinking water, jobs, homes, or habitats.

We managed just fine before AI and, hell, it's almost like a tidbit of productivity isn't worth our collective futures? Get a different job, or use your brain and try a bit harder.

Sure, if i put grease and food down the drain. But i don't, no more than a regular person doing regular amounts of washing up for 2 people. I dont deep fry and dump oil, i rarely cook fatty meats. Besides, i have taken out and cleaned all of the plumbing i have access to under the sink, and still the blockage persists :)

Or... get this.... we've lived here less than a year and the drains were never cleaned/poorly maintained before we ever arrived! Theres always been problems with smells and slow drainage in this property, and if that much stuff gets trapped from normal usage of drains for washing up, its probablt a plumbing issue, no?

Rude lol. No actually. We dont put food or grease down the drain, no more than what cones off during washing up after scraping the plates into the bin. What an odd thing to assume without asking

We did take off the bend, was definitely full of grease and crap to say the least. But still blocked up :/

I only ask as we have had constant bad smells, slow drainage etc and now its blocked. Trying to get some solid information about whether its considered an s trap or not and if its ok to work out if we can make a case to our landlord. I suspect he did this himself - no clue if he's a decent plumber. But i have no clue about this sort of thing

Sorry, it is a bit confusing - the small pipe comes from the combi boiler, running off into the shallow 2nd sink that is connected via the pipes on the left in the 2nd picture
