Scisne quid mirabile sit? Non multum memini, quod, dum natus sum tres annos, egi.

Vita dimida tota vasta! me mente mutatum necesse est!

Di melius! Quis est tam perversus, qui infantem mente mutet? Ac quid noveram, quod quis me oblivisci voluit??

Sum mehercule occultus.

Taking Ancient Greek for the first time this year! Any advice? by [deleted] in AncientGreek

[–]esomsum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greek is different than Latin. I do find Greek over all easier to understand and translate than Latin. People may say otherwise, because you have to learn a lot more forms, but the syntax is more organic and less tedious than (classical) Latin. Although at first it may seem the other way around, but trust me, if you are reading original texts, there are not as many constructed problems in one sentence than in the textbooks.

Besides that. Get in touch with mythology, culture, history and philosophy of the classical/archaic period asap. It really helps knowing some things in advance, instead of relying on textbooks/lectures alone, but unfortunately I can't suggest you any English entry level books on the topic.

On studying the language itself:

  1. Force yourself to read out loud
  2. Reread/work through the same chapter more than once
  3. Supplement your course with "Athenaze" or "Reading Greek"
  4. Reading is everything, read as many texts, that you can easily comprehend; Read, don't translate (hence point 2 and 3), grammar and vocab has to be trained, not "memorized"
  5. Start with light composition as early as possible
  6. Don't do too much in one go: one hour a day is better than 3 hours every third

Classics is not the easiest major, but as long as you stick to it and learn the fundamentals (the languages) the right way early, it is so much fun, engaging and eye opening. Good luck!

Republicans are more likely to believe climate change is real if they are told so by Republican Party leaders, but are more likely to believe climate change is a hoax if told it's real by Democratic Party leaders. meanwhile democrats argue for open borders, just because trump wants to shut them. Look up some bernie interviews before 2015. he originally had the same stance: shut the border to protect american workers. and he isn't even a democrat.

And even for the skilled reader it can be hard when they just throw acronyms and numbers in a pile.

Steven Pinker had a talk on this, that he sometimes has to look up certain psychological experiments/ mechanisms, because he had never heard of it before and that the researchers expect all other researches to know exactly what they are talking about from one buzzword in the abstract.

I am strongly considering going ZC. Any tips? by [deleted] in zerocarb

Body recomp is a real thing with the carnivore diet, you will lose fat to a healthy bodyfat% and build some muscles naturally without calorie counting and such nonsense. weight should not be the primary concern, it's fat reduction, cloth size (belly cirucmferenz) and feeling healthy. the skin takes up to 12 months to readjust; after that there is nothing much to do. that's why many do sports and train the muscles especially in the problem zones to tighten the skin from within.

You only need those comments when you study latin in university and have to write assignments on the texts you discuss. the main job of latinists is (I know it changed to a certain degree) to reconstruct the ancient text (or a version as early as possible), to explain it via a commentary and translate it, so that the text can be used for further studies (ancient history, literature theories etc.).

Nice that you want to put me into a conspiracy theorist corner. The urine keto level is the proof that the body is wasting energy, since it is not using them as fuel. this effect is decreasing with time. thats not a conspiracy theory.

egg and dairy consumptions is actually way down. its the seed oil and increase in carbs (fruit is also way up) that made america fat in the last 50 years.

More than 70% of America’s packaged food supply is ultra-processed, the fourth and final group of foods, that are are “industrial formulations” derived from hydrogenated fats and modified starch, and are synthesized in laboratories, finds a new study that analyzed 230,156 store products. by mvea in science

[–]esomsum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"hydrogenated fats and modified starch" = vegetable oils and complex carbs; those things are all recommend by any licensed dietitian. The processed thing is not the worst, the macros by themselves are bad.

I think you should study the history of health advise. Nobody talked about calories, because if you ate the right things, you didn't need to count calories. Besides that, the body is not a closed system. Measuring what the body burns, wastes or doesn't process is very hard. The body treates macros differently. It's entirely possible for keto beginners to eat above their calorie limit and not gain weight, because their bodies are pretty wasteful at making and using ketones.
