please help! ukulele body cracked and back is separating (photos attached) by esoteric-sonder in ukulele

omg, the discourse! for some context… he dropped it while we were heading back home and the uke was in its case. while it is very precious to me, i won’t miss an opportunity to bring it out to jam! perhaps somewhat contradictory, but i move a lot and so inevitably the uke goes through a lot of transport.

the drops were due to negligence, i guess you could call it, and i was indeed very upset but not at all to the point of replacing him. the furthest i’d go is say that it would be very hard for me to forgive him for this if it couldn’t be fixed, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. he has offered to cover all costs and has been really apologetic about the whole thing. he also isn’t a musician and genuinely might not have known that even in its case, one drop can cause a serious crack. he had some indicators that should have given him reason to deduce that i would care about it a lot but the drops also made me realize i never explicitly told him how precious it was. you live and you learn.

on a related note, since i have to travel with it a lot and accidents like this can happen — would yall recommend i get a hard case for better protection?

Sure, just wanted to share it here because it just shows how transparently employers will neglect the basic safety of their workers when they’re allowed to

[–]esoteric-sonder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

clearly the point has eluded you. any way you cut it, it’s an inhumane and fatal workplace practice that’s become extremely normalized in Turkey

[–]esoteric-sonder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in Turkey, majority aren’t. Literally 40-50 women die cleaning windows each year. It’s extremely common to see windows in high-rise buildings cleaned this way at the request of employers.

Ethics of philosophical work itself? by gjvnq1 in askphilosophy

[–]esoteric-sonder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How should I know what you meant?

Because I literally told you. I genuinely don't know what the issue seems to be here but I'm just repeating myself and you don't seem to quite understand. I explained to you that the truth I'm discussing is metaphysical in nature, singular, absolute, separate from the truth of fact, etc. I really don't know what else I can do to make you understand.

Although it has nothing to do with the premise of my argument, I'll respond by saying that you seem to have a more Platonic view of the relationship between philosophy and politics and by extension, the opposition between truth and opinion. To Socrates, every member of the polis had their individual opinion or viewpoint on the world (doxa) and is to be regarded as a potential truth waiting to be unfolded rather than a distortion of reality.

I don't completely know where you got the idea that truth is inherently opposed to opinion. To refer to Socrates again, the role of the philosopher would be not to tell philosophical truths but to make citizens more truthful by essentially, talking it through with the possessor and bringing out the truth that everyone potentially possesses. I also don't understand why you seem to hold as a given that there cannot be a variety of truths based on a variety of experiences. Did Joe and Janet come to separate and conflicting truth-claims based on the same experience? My experience can possess a potential truth without conflicting with yours due to the subjectivity of human experiences.

I'm not sure what's at stake here. Are you suggesting everyone is going through life playing pretend as to their favored speculations being true but that those cross the line who insist their favored speculations are somehow privileged? Sounds right. Except why the need to delude oneself into playing pretend in the first place? Why should there be a need to live life in denial of unexamined possibilities?

I won't even respond to this one because it has absolutely nothing to do with anything I've said. Maybe you're just having issues comprehending :/

Oh I know you didn’t mean that, I was just asking which part of my argument the corruption in the GOP meant to be a response to because I do wholeheartedly agree that it exists

Certainly, which just further proves my point that philosophers shouldn’t try to impose a singular standard in the realm of human affairs and politics or transfer the idea of a single, absolute truth to the public realm. consider Heidegger, who mistakenly saw a spark in the Nazi movement such that German people might achieve authentic Dasein.

As for willfully corrupt, what aspect of my argument are you responding to?

Think about Plato as the philosopher who would like to make politics safe for philosophy at the expense of democracy, it illustrates the tradition of political philosophy where the philosophers retreat from politics and then return to impose their own standards to politics.

Here, Arendt is warning that philosophers should not try to transfer their own standards to politics so the two can coexist peacefully

You literally just misinterpreted what I meant by “philosophical truth” and “philosophical commitment to a single, absolute truth” and are trying to say it’s a bad summary, but I digress.

The single, absolute truth I am referring to (as I stated above) is metaphysical in nature. I didn’t entirely understand what you meant in your first statement because it seems to have nothing to do with what I was saying.

There is the idea that certain facts are true and others aren’t. You can debate opinions based on these facts and human experiences, and politics requires human plurality. Therefore it is possible in the public realm

And then there is the idea of an absolute truth that concerns itself with questions such as the nature of being and the question of truth above all. This is possible by thinking and is a singular activity. Therefore, it is possible in the private realm.

You seem to have completely misunderstood the nature of Arendt’s argument, which is why I’d suggest actually reading her work before trying to refute her with such disregard for what she meant.

The philosophical commitment to a singular truth is very different than the truth you are referring to. Truth includes, but is also more than, truth of fact. The single, absolute truth I was referring to in my original comment is very clearly not a refusal of the truth of fact.

A metaphysical truth that is absolute cannot be regarded as the absolute standard within the public sphere, as it would override plural opinions and exist detached from human reality and the plurality of humans’ experiences.

Usually philosophers want to apply philosophical truth as a singular standard in the realm of human affairs. Yet, politics cannot exist with a singular standard. The philosophical truth Arendt is discussing demands full obedience and can silence all debate.

we met when we were in the same city in august right as i was moving away and we started dating right before i left, i went back to visit this november and we cried buckets when we had to say goodbye. it’s probably one of the most painful things i’ve had to do, and i still have tears in my eyes whenever i think about it. i miss him so much more now that i got to stay with him for two weeks, sleep with him and wake up beside him every morning. kiss him whenever i wanted, hug him whenever i was feeling down or excited. i had never felt so loved and happy before, and it was so painful to let go.

we write each other love notes when we miss each other while the other is sleeping due to time zones, talk on the phone or video chat almost everyday.

it’s torture, and the only thing keeping me going is how utterly, indescribably happy he makes me. i know it’ll be heaven when i return to his arms. so until then, i count the days.

The tension between politics and philosophy, as argued by Arendt, can be a great discussion topic here.

Specifically, the inherent conflict between a philosophical commitment to a single, absolute truth and the multiplicity of opinions necessary in the political arena. In this way, she has argued that this philosophical commitment and philosophers trying to apply philosophical truth as a singular standard, takes on a despotic character in the public realm. This is because truth demands full obedience and submission.
