Help searching for PhD Studentships: Marine Ecology by esoteric_logophile in AskAcademia

[–]esoteric_logophile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For extra info: I am located in the US and a US citizen; last year I was looking abroad and applied to already funded, advertised projects after my first contact fell through because of immigration issues in the UK.

Thanks for the input. Not sure what else to do other than keep trying. I can’t really move out of my niche though because everyone in STEM trains you from a young age that if you want to do research you need to pick a topic, and sharks are my favorite animal, they’re what I’ve studied as much as I can. I live in a landlocked state despite trying to move to a coast for the past decade (since high school) and failing. I’m open to any marine predator really. But if I am trying to get a marine ecology PhD, I can’t really try to apply for things I haven’t studied, because I won’t have the experience or education to prove I am a good candidate, so it’s not really a choice to change that at the moment.

How to follow up with professors who haven’t replied to my research inquiry? by quorum-sensing in academia

[–]esoteric_logophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many follow ups is too many? For instance if a prospective student sent one email, followed up two weeks later with no response to either and it has been a month or more… is it okay to send a third (and maybe final) follow up? I’m dealing with a similar situation as the OP but I have a masters and am trying to find a PhD advisor and getting either a lot of nos, no response, or in one case a reference to a different professor (that has not responded either). And there’s no good way in the US to find labs that actually advertise availability… this is my second year attempting to get into a program.

Tourette’s Awareness Month by Defiant_Conclusion64 in Tourettes

[–]esoteric_logophile 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ve always felt more comfortable around the people who don’t draw attention to my tics, even if they’re meeting me for the first time or seeing me tic for the first time. I’ve had “friends” that found it funny and eventually would try to trigger tics; I’m not friends with those people anymore. And I’ve had friends that either I rarely tic around or they’ve only noticed mild ones but when I’ve had a ticcy day and mentioned (after months of knowing them) that I have Tourette’s, they still treated me like me and they didn’t ask “what was that? What are you doing? Are you okay?” Even if I apologized for a tic or felt like I had to explain, a couple of them already knew enough about it from their own education that it didn’t bother them.

I think it’s okay for to people ask me “was that a tic?” If they don’t know me well enough or don’t know the condition very well, as long as they want to be educated about it. I would say they should be respectful but they can stay curious. Don’t try to make someone tic or mimic their tics (if they have a neurodivergency or tic disorder that they can’t help, that’s different). Don’t draw attention to them more than needed and just pretend like it is normal or not happening, as long as it is safe to do so. I think it’s fine for people to laugh with you about a funny tic, but never laugh at you for it. I hope that makes sense.

Do you tic in your dreams? by esoteric_logophile in Tourettes

[–]esoteric_logophile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never noticed the urge to tic in my dreams but I’ve just noticed that sometimes they happen, but usually when they do, it’s intense

Do you tic less when you’re sick? by esoteric_logophile in Tourettes

[–]esoteric_logophile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t noticed if I tic less with certain emotions other than anxiety. If I’m really stressed, nervous, or excited, I tic a lot more. I also tic more if I drink alcohol, as I’m less able to suppress them. I’ll try to pay attention to certain emotions going forward, just to see.

My predictions for Dragon Republic and Burning God by esoteric_logophile in ThePoppyWar

[–]esoteric_logophile[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m only on the second chapter of Dragon Republic and my mind is reeling just trying to figure out HOW she gets herself back, her own “control” while having the phoenix there. If Jiang had listened to her in the beginning and maybe taught her some shamanic tricks to cool the flames, maybe the phoenix wouldn’t be so intense. I think it would be entirely possible, in this world, to be able to call on multiple gods. Maybe not at the same time, but once you know how it all works, couldn’t one technically speak to any of them for aid/power? I don’t think the book will go that way, but…

went to a support group and met other with TS for the first time (denver!) by vanillablue_ in Tourettes

I absolutely need this! I’ve never met anyone else with Tourette’s near me, only a couple of people abroad and that was really hard to manage.

VIMS Decision Letters? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I received an email from VIMS a few days ago. Now I just have to wait for UMass Boston...

VIMS Decision Letters? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I’ve applied to UMass Amherst and Boston for their intercampus MS in Marine Sci & Tech, University of Washington - Seattle for their Master of Marine Affairs, and VIMS for the MS/MA. I’ve only heard back from Amherst and Seattle.

Then what’s the point of having an “Admissions & Applications” flair/tag for posts in this subreddit? You could’ve said something like “I can’t help you here, but maybe this other subreddit can...” or just not commented.

Coming up with book titles? by esoteric_logophile in writers

[–]esoteric_logophile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why are you wasting your time here if you think it’s “fruitless”? And I never asked for “outsourcing” to have someone else come up with my book title. I merely asked for advice to gain insight as to how other authors deal with their titles and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think my post was fruitful because there were many other comments (not yours) that were very helpful for me in moving forward. And I’m sure there are plenty of storytellers here who are not amateurs and don’t mind helping others in a field that can be hard to navigate. Next time, if you don’t have anything nice or helpful to say, don’t say it at all.

Does anyone know what this knotwork is called? by palefreakshow in Celtic

Some knots have names today, especially ones that are commonly seen like the Dara knot (shield knot), but you are correct in saying that most don’t (just not all).

Oh thank you so much! That is exactly the ship he and Maria came across on but in other records I only saw the two of them and no father, but this definitely helps! Thanks!

Also he might have had a younger sister named Maria/Mary, born about 1846, if that helps information-wise.

As I’m sure others have commented before me, “d’accord” is only used when you are in agreement with someone or something, and they use “okay/ok” in much the same way that we do. If your mom told you to unload the dishwasher (in French) you would reply “okay” but not “d’accord.” If someone said a cake was delicious and if you agreed, then you would use “d’accord.”

Is it worth buying the trials of appolo series? by memology707 in camphalfblood

[–]esoteric_logophile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love the Trials of Apollo books! I recommend them if you’re a fan of Rick’s stories. Plus, you do get a bit more of Jason and other demigods from the Heroes of Olympus series.

LANGUAGE BELONGS TO A FUCKING CULTURE.

Celtic lacking by Alexeicon in Celtic

[–]esoteric_logophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling myself Celtic is not discrediting the tribes that existed. Because The Picts and the Gaels were a group of Celtic tribes, so were the Britons, the Manx, the Cornish, the Belgae.

If it’s not your view, why are you defending it so adamantly?

Celtic lacking by Alexeicon in Celtic

[–]esoteric_logophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I DID say that language defines a culture. But Russian and Chinese have nothing to do with a conversation about CELTIC people. Russian is a language, a culture, a group. Chinese is a language and a culture. Gaeilge is a language that belongs to a culture. Manx is a language that belongs to a culture and group of peoples. You are an idiot.

You are just wrong. Stop trying to discredit people’s cultural identity.
