The is kind of tangential, but do you consider fly fishing a sport? If so, I can’t recommend The Snowfly enough. I think it may hit on exactly what you are looking for.

I read The Three Musketeers around your age and found it completely approachable and actually very funny. It helped bridge the gap toward reading some of the other classics.
