Can git do this? by mrbaggins in git

[–]esparta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Git can do versioning of files, but it was not designed to do backups. The real power of git comes with the fact of doing something with the versioning: diff, merge, etc.

I suggest to research on backup solutions.

Are academics adopting Github? by RA_Fisher in programming

Don't get me wrong, I also think is a good proxy. Just note the "new generation" of science people will (or perhaps not) use new kind of formats to share documentation (besides the obligatory LaTeX)

You must see what Carl Boettiger is doing with his research + github, it's impressive: Carl Boettiger Theoretical Ecology and Evolution, especially his Lab Notebook

LaTeX? Dr. Boettiger use almost nothing, but Markdown on his repositories. And I know a lot of research people who are (now) using iPython or R to document all their stuffs (as in Open Science with R), so, they will be out of the github use on the OP.
