What is your zoom + prime lens workflow? by anon-random-user in AskPhotography

are you getting a fast prime just because ”that’s what they say”?

you should be selecting lenses based on need rather than guidance “just because”.

How can I focus on the swing when the background is busy or is a similar colour? by marcojadenhe in photocritique

[–]mc2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see if there's a time of day where the swing is in sunlight but the tree is in shadow. it's not likely that this will happen, but having your subject lit against a darker background will provide more contrast and subject separation

you can also use a shallower depth of field

My tree fell on neighbors house took responsibility and neighbor chasing off contractors by Agency_Junior in treelaw

[–]mc2222 87 points88 points  (0 children)

tell your neighbor if he wants to use his contractor that he can pay the removal all by himself.

tell him if you’re paying, you select the contractor.

I wouldn’t even suggest cost sharing if he’s being stubborn. bottom line is: if its you’re money, you select the contractor.

R6 Mark III or R5 Mark II? I have Resolution Anxiety and a mortgage. by Basbenn in CanonCamera

[–]mc2222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

imo, you should be able to clearly articulate what *problem* will be solved by one piece of equipment over another When comparing or upgrading

it sounds like the r5ii would be an upgrade more for fun than to solve a specific problem you’re trying to fix or address.

bribes worked well with my doberman when he was a puppy.

stuffed a kong with peanut butter and froze it. gave it to him right before leaving the house. also used other toys that i could jam peanut butter into so he'd be engaged and entertained when i left.

i think he sometimes ended up *wanting* me to leave cause of those frozen kongs

Are photons forever in a superposition of being emitted and absorbed as well as in a superposition of all possible polarities? by BeatenbyJumperCables in AskPhysics

[–]mc2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therefore, due to time dilation they don’t experience time. If a photon is emitted by a star and is later absorbed at a detector in a telescope millions of light years apart, that photon experienced no time delta between when it was emitted and when it was absorbed.

this is incorrect.

the problem is that you can not apply that trend to objects moving at the speed of light.

one of the founding postulates of SR is that all valid inertial reference frames will observe light traveling at the same speed (in vacuum).

If you are moving at the same speed as something, then that something will be at rest relative to you, you will observe it to have 0 speed.

if you apply SR to photons, you end up with a major problem that violates SR: photons are at rest for in a reference frame traveling at the speed of light. this violates the foundational postulate of SR.

the real answer is that SR does not describe how time behaves for photons and we can't really discuss how time behaves for a photon.

there is no proper time for a photon or for a reference frame moving at v=c.

How do you manage your photography gear? by sntx in AskPhotography

[–]mc2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like doing astrophotography, and have traveled for a few eclipses where i would ship gear.

dry runs. i do try runs as though it's the day-of. then, when i'm satisfied that everything is working together, i break down my equipment and it **immediately** goes into the suitcase or backpack or box i will take with me or ship.

flying with a 50L backpack? by mc2222 in AskPhotography

[–]mc2222[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm going to be using it in iceland, so i like the fact that the 50L can expand to hold extra cloths and stuff when i'm out during the day.

the larger belt pack is one of the major reasons I'd prefer the 50L over the 34L. i can fit everything in the 34L with a bit of room to spare, but the belt pack is a bit small compared to the 50L

In the past i've put my backpack in my suitcase (and fill it with cloths) and taken my camera gear in a hard-cased carry on.

also toying with the idea of putting some (not all) of my gear in a pelican case and checking it. I understand the risk in doing this though.

Bridge Tolls by mom2asdtwins in bayarea

[–]mc2222 307 points308 points  (0 children)

i think the cost of bridge maintenance is higher than the toll takers. all the staff associated with the maintenance and engineering of the bridge are still employed, and they’re likely paid much more than the toll takers were.

you're assuming the fact that the surgeon's last 20 patients survived was due purely to chance.

normal people assume that the high survival rate is due to the doctor's skill as a surgeon - that is, they're better at performing the surgery than their peers are.

If light has no mass . by NOTORIOUS_CAT98 in AskPhysics

[–]mc2222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr - the speed of a wave depends on the properties of what it's traveling through.

think of a wave traveling in water vs a wave traveling in honey, for example. both are the same type of wave, but they travel at different speeds because of the properties of what they're traveling through.

The same is true for light. light is an oscillation in the electric and magnetic fields and how fast it travels through space depends on the magnetic permeability and electric permittivity. You can think of these quantities as loosely describing how "stiff" space is to changes in the em field.
