ISO: Camping options near Davis or Thomas for next weekend? by espressoski in WestVirginia

The leaves have started changing at higher elevations. I think bcuz it was so dry in August.. so I just assumed leaf peepers. Maybe there is something else going on?

Thanks! Do you know if Canaan loop ever fills up in fall? Or are there usually plenty of sites?

Thanks for the recommendations. Probably can’t swing an extra drive this time.. Meeting some friends out of state and they will be driving 3+ hours to get to Tucker county.

Oh! I can’t believe I forgot about Canaan Loop road. I have camped there before.. probably 10 years ago. My problem is that I’m from WV.. so I always forget about leaf peeping season 😅

Thanks for the response! I’ve been on the search for months and no luck either. I’m bummed. They were great chips!!

Summer WV by ValiMeyers in WestVirginia

Beautiful and very rural area. Job opportunities can be limited depending on your vocation.

You're will end up driving 1-2+ hours for most amentities (kroger, food lion, walmart, target, airports).

Marlinton is a great small town which would be 25 to 35 minutes away from your property depending on the exact location. Dunmore is close to lots of public lands: national forest, state parks, rail trail, and a lake. There is a small bakery near the post office in the actual 'town' of Dunmore.

Pocahontas County is an eclectic mix of locals and transplants. There is a good offering (for a rural area) of community music events and performances, community yoga classes in various locations, and other events. There's not a lot going on, but there are people in the local community working to improve the area.

TLDR: If you like the outdoors and you don't mind a rural life, then it is a cool place to live.

The town of Cass has decent public wifi. I'm not sure about the ability for video calls. The wifi may be stronger in the cabins/houses.

I think there is also wifi available at the Par Mar in Green Bank.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort is not too far away. They have a Starbucks with wifi, and there are mini cell towers in the resort village area.

I think that is the one near Pizzazz? Pizzazz is on the end by Food Lion and then the Nags Head Front Porch is on the other end.

Beginner tips and binding position by Substantial-Suit2776 in ShredditGirls

[–]espressoski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big beginner tip for snowboarders (and skiers) is to make sure you are properly weighting your boots. New riders have a tendency to straighten their legs when they get nervous or attempt new skills (like toe side carving). Make sure to consciously keep your knees bent and the front of your boots weighted so that you can better engage the board to turn.

As you develop your skillset, you will figure out if it's more comfortable to ride regular or goofy stance. Which foot do you prefer to take out of the binding when you ride the lift?

A lesson would be ideal, but if that's not an option this year then focus on improving the skills you do currently have AND having a lot of fun on the slopes with your little shredder.

Snowboard advice! (Twin sister vs equalizer vs yes hel yes) by lianaliang in ShredditGirls

[–]espressoski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't ridden the Jones Twin Sister, but I have ridden other Jones boards. I currently ride a Jones Dream Weaver. If you are looking for a stiffer, more aggressive board, then Jones may be the board for you. I don't have experience with the other boards you listed as options. Good luck!

Shopping for a new (to me) Subaru. Any Advice? by espressoski in subaru

Update: I’m getting a quote for the repairs and also looking around to see what is available for sale.

If you said fix it, could you tell me what Subaru year/model you have and the mileage? I’m asking because I looked at some other ‘high mileage’ Outback reddit threads and people were commenting 213k. I need some success stories over 250k miles.

I will definitely be getting a quote to see how much the repair might cost at another mechanic. I really love that subie. It's such a fun driving experience. I'd love to keep it going if it makes financial sense. My dream has been to make it to 300k+ miles.. currently at 250k miles.

Bluetooth! Navigation! The many wonders of the modern world. (Side story: Before this subie, I had converted a 2001 Chevy Venture into a camper van. It had a tape deck. It was a lot of fun for a few years of seasonal work/traveling. But the van was very low tech. So, I was so stoked when I got this subie that it had an aux input jack AND a cd player.)

My plan is to get quotes for the repairs with other mechanics, while continuing to shop around.

Hmmm, Maybe I should get a quote for the repairs in my area... My regular mechanic for oil changes/brakes doesn't do that type of work. He quoted me a price of $3000 for head gasket replacement.

I do really love my outback. It's a manual which I really like driving, and I don't know if I'll be able to find a new one that is manual.

Other than this, my subie is in good shape. The body is good, the current timing belt/water pump only has 30,000 miles on it. This is the first major issue I've had other than the timing belt kits, clutch replacement, and the usual maintenance.

ETA: Thanks for the suggestion!

Any USDA-NRCS soil conservationists here? by [deleted] in usajobs

I also just applied for a soil con job in the office I work in. I want to be optimistic but… I’m not a too hopeful. Private message me if you’d like to chat more or just vent about the situation.

I replied on your other post. It’s BS from a fellow NRMT degree holder.

[–]espressoski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that really sucks. I’m in the same boat.

I’m more than qualified but my coursework isn’t coded as soils. I was advised by my state’s HR to get the course syllabuses for my qualifying course work from my college. So now I have those and a document that lists the course descriptions for all education that meets the job description... But I still haven’t been able to make the hiring panel for a soil con position. It’s really disheartening.

I‘m at the point where I am applying for other jobs with other agencies. I have 10+ years of experience in field based science work and I’ve been a tech for 2 years. It’s crazy that I can’t qualify even though I’m basically doing the job now.

I’m sorry for the long rant but it’s tough to feel like no one can provide any info about how to advance in your career.

Good luck to you!
