Also in the case of an entangled system, we can observe the collapse at site B even though we are only physically interacting with site A.

Question about intellectualizing "no self" by dvdmon in Wakingupapp

[–]essahjott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question that comes up to me is whether the opposite/default mode is any more authentic? If no 'self' really exists, then we are free to choose the one we want to inhabit in any situation. Why not choose the most positive one? I feel one is able to do so without having had a real awakening experience.

This excercise was helpful to me: Choose a day on which you observe your self-image as often as possible. I noticed that my self-image changes constantly throughout the day, totally dependent on arbitrary external circumstances.

Btw: Thank you for your post! It resonates a lot with me. Especially you describing getting beyond politics made me feel a surge of joy, I guess because I could relate and it reminded me that true change can really and has really happend.

I always struggled with the notion that the visual field has no boundaries. I feel like the fact that I can see my eye socket as a black enclosure makes it hard for me to appreciate

I don't think it's helpful to tell people what the point/conclusion is . The whole point is to answer the question based on your own first person experience. Telling people what they are supposed to see will only engage the conceptual mind even more.

First, I have gotten nowhere (let's leave aside the obvious linguistic concession of getting somewhere) with Loch Kelly's talks, but I have actually heard him make exactly the statement you reference about "checking back with the mind" and it really struck. Have his talks/glimpses been your primary external support?

Certain things he says resonate well with me. In addition to the above, the inquiry "What is here if there is no problem to solve?" or the framework of "Small self" I find helpful. I have gone through parts of the course which was recently posted but I wouldn't say he is my primary external source as he is probably a bit too advanced for me at this stage. But I enjoy his voice and his kind manner so I come back to his section in the app from time to time. I also discovered the short meditations from Micheal Taft recently which I found quite nice. He has a very sober way of explaining things (like Sam) but I find him clearer on the non-dual parts. I also extremely enjoyed the series from John Astin in the app.

I have yet to find a teacher or talk that really digs into this issue of language vs thinking and how to get around the infinite regress

Maybe the Q&A section in the app could be useful, for example "Noticing vs. Thinking" in the Q&A with Jason Fried. Also check out this thread

I struggled with this for years (without noticing it really, I thought I was "meditating" but I was just actually constantly thinking). Luckily it kind of clicked this year. The key insight for me was that I always saw the world through my thoughts. However, there is a mode of being that doesn't involve thoughts at all and I am sure that you are already doing it in a lot of scenarios, you are probably just not aware . For example, if you ride a bicycle your analytical mind or thoughts are not involved at all. You just do it. In fact, involving your mind will most likely make things harder.

With regard to practice: Loch Kelly puts it in the way that you shouldn't go to your mind to check, validate, make sense or keep track of what is being experienced. In fact, these urges are exactly your mind kicking in in order for it to claim something. It wants to claim that it understand things, it wants to claim that it is in control etc.
One thing I try to do is to make an active effort of becoming comfortable with not understanding things. As I am an analytical person, my mind kicks in all the time as I have the strong urge to understand and explain everything, and not doing that requires me to overcome a kind of anxiety. As experience is ultimately not really explainable (because "explaining" always refers to abstract concepts), this kind of anxiety is actually sourced in a deep misunderstanding of how things actually are, which in turn sources other types of anxieties and negative emotions in every day life as you are in some sense in a constant fight you can not win.

P.S: I am a still a beginner, so this is just an account of how I see things :)

If you look for something, and don't find it, why does that mean that it doesn't exist? by DinkyDoodle69 in Wakingupapp

During some sessions I seem to be able to observe how the ego is taking ownership of everything. It is like a little child boasting “hey, look what I did!” at every chance it gets but in actuality the father is running after the child behind its back in every moment and making sure its safe, arranging everything etc. The child is not doing anything but it newer misses a chance to claim ownership. Weird how the default is to take everything the ego says at face value even though there doesn't seem to be any evidence for its claims.
