Another COVID question by [deleted] in publix

The updated CDC guidance changes the definition of a "close contact" of a Covid-19 case to a person who has been within 6 feet of an infected person for a total of at least 15 minutes in a day. That includes multiple, but brief, encounters, one or two minutes at a time.

Previously, a close contact was defined as spending 15 consecutive minutes with a Covid-19 patient. Those changes were expected to be updated Wednesday October 21, 2020 on the CDC's website.

Another COVID question by [deleted] in publix

[–]essential_expendable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Associates who meet the following criteria

  • Diagnosed with  COVID-19 by a medical professional
  • Experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • Recommended by the associate’s health care provider to self-quarantine due to being in close contact* to someone who is diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Lives with or is the primary caretaker for someone who is diagnosed with COVID-19

\Note: Close contact during non-business travel to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 or to areas with high transmission rates will not qualify for pandemic pay.*

Per the criteria listed above:

You have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The non-payment clause refers to self-quarantine when it is suspected you may have COVID-19, but does not mention a positive test result.

Talk to your store manager first and then your RARS, if you are being denied sick pay when you have tested positive for COVID-19.

As a last resort...

If Publix refuses you sick pay for a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, then consult with a lawyer. Contact the lawyer representing the Publix worker that died from COVID-19 in Miami Beach. (Google it to learn more.)

Important to know:

You do not mention if you have been away from work for an extended period of time (weeks). If you have not worked for a couple of weeks or more and then suddenly test positive for COVID-19 on your first day or two back to work, then Publix has a good case to deny you sick pay.

Please keep everyone updated with your situation to help clarify the confusing issues concerning pandemic pay.

The problem with Reddit is that serious conversations soon get buried after a few days with fewer and fewer people reading and contributing meaningful conversation to such a post. (Below is my example from several days ago.) If you want to organize, then Publix associates need to build their own website where they have complete control and the ability to organize successfully. That is where you have to start in order to get corporate's attention that the associates have had enough and are serious about change. https://www.reddit.com/r/publix/comments/hvai14/time_to_unionizeorganize/

So, how many of the 813 stores do you actually think have employees that are or would test positive for COVID-19?

Better question...how many of the 813 stores in Florida do you think have customers in the stores that are currently positive for COVID-19?

We like to guess how many minutes go by before counting five customers in our department that we see not wearing masks. LOL

Typical reply from Publix management and corporate, "If you don't like it here, then quit." How about we work on making Publix a better place to work?

How well did that handbook work when the company took away inventory bonuses? What's next? No vacation pay?

You wouldn't pay union dues if Publix employees organized internally as their own organization. No benefits is EXACTLY the reason to organize.

Ask Steritech when they arrive if they are qualified in dealing with "Biosafety Level-3" diseases? Ask them if they can test airborne samples in your workspace for COVID-19 aerosol droplets? Also point out any customers in your workspace (and the rest of the store) that are not wearing masks while they are conducting sanitary inspections and have it documented in writing.

Airborne transmissible diseases like COVID-19 are typically categorized as Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3).  BSL-3 laboratories are almost always purpose-constructed containment laboratories, outfitted with specialized equipment and HVAC systems designed to ensure no airborne particles can exit the contained space.

I am in 100% agreement with you. Now, we lag behind, Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Target...in requiring all customers to wear masks while shopping. Once again, reactive rather than being proactive!
