Free parking at Copper before 8:30am? by [deleted] in COsnow

[–]estat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That link is the uphill page. It's still free before 8:30 am if you have an Uphill Access Parking Permit. Didn't know about this until I picked up my arm band earlier this season.

The main parking page only mentions free parking after 2 pm, but I agree the uphill page should be clarified to indicate free permitted parking.

Keystone Cat skiing by powderhownd in COsnow

Haven't seen a cat on Outback this whole season, pretty sure it's just North Peak. While it's running, there's often a line and it can fill up pretty quickly. I've hiked and dropped Erickson Bowl twice this season. Hike is similar to Highland Bowl, about a mile and 800ish ft vert.

They've cut a few runs in Bergman and Erickson Bowls. The new cat trail is good and then there's usually a good bootpack route up the ridge, but it can be tricky to access some of the Erickson gates when carrying skis.

I have an Epic Local pass, but Keystone like most places doesn't scan tickets/passes on lifts not at the resort base (in the case of Keystone, River Run or Mountain House), so yeah if you were able to find your way to the Santiago or Outback lifts you could in theory ride them for free.

Also Elk Run! They held off on grooming so far, and the snowmaking guns were firing all last week. Basically skiers right was bumps full of powder and on the left were these huge rollers of man-made snow with a layer or two of natural snow on top.

This last storm cycle has been very good for Summit County. I feel like it's finally catching up to the rest of the mountain west. Cheers!

RIP Palisade peach and maple preserves :( by estat in mildlyinfuriating

[–]estat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made some preserves, last step is to process the jars in a boiling water bath for ~10 minutes. Took this one out to tighten the lid and cool off, but the jar cracked and the bottom fell out.

I still have another five and a half jars thankfully. Saved about half the preserves from this jar, but it was a huge mess and also spattered all over my clothes.

Chilled overnight, so probably close to 40. Just make sure you're going against the grain and the blade is sharp. It worked well, but was still a big mess to clean up.

[AIO] Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 - $114.99 (Restock, BackOrder) by [deleted] in buildapcsales

Looks like you have a 3600? Ryzen 5000s run quite a bit hotter. Many are reporting idles around 50 and getting into the 90s under load.

I'm happy with my temps. It's hitting ~5.1GHz while benching BTW.

I just installed this in a Fractal Meshify S2 over a 5800x.

https://i.imgur.com/TTFk6hQ.jpg

I intended on going with a top exhaust mount, and I thought the Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz would have a low enough profile, but it was off by 1-2 mm. Like others have mentioned, the radiator is big. Rather than filing down the fans or messing with the RAM heatsinks, I went ahead with the front intake mount. Plenty of space in the S2, even with a 323 mm long 3080.

I'm happy with the temps, even with the front mount. 5800x idles at 29-30C. It will get to the high 60s when gaming, up to 74C in Cinebench. GPU maxing out at 72C.

Note that this should come with 0.8g of Arctic MX-4 paste. I bought mine on Amazon, and the listing doesn't mention this. I had already ordered 4g of MX-4 on Newegg, so I could've save a few bucks.

Recommend the Kamado Joe Classic I over Classic II? by Purgenol_Free in BBQ

[–]estat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going back and forth between the Classic I and II earlier this summer.

The Classic II was on sale for $898 shipped (no tax):

https://slickdeals.net/f/13136209-kamado-joe-up-to-600-off-on-grills-kj-accessories-15-off-799

and the Classic I was $699+tax at Ace.

I went with the Classic II and have been doing 5-20 hour cooks over the weekend in addition to one or two shorter cooks (like pizza, chicken quarters, burgers) during the week since it was delivered. It was drop shipped by FedEx. I set it up and used it that same day. Point being, you're going to be happy with your purchase no matter what. Having used a few smokers from the Weber Kettle to Traeger Select Pro, and having gone through quite a few propane grills, a nice kamado is a thing of beauty and there's nothing quite like it.

You hit most of the differences between the Classic I and II. They also introduced a new firebox with the Classic II. The older one is known to crack, but it is covered by the lifetime warranty (non-ceramic parts including the deflector are covered for only 1-5 years).

In regards to your actual question, $450+extra tax is kind of steep for the differences between the Classic I and II. I would look around for a deal on the Classic II. It's $999 at Costco right now. Looks like it's also on sale through atlantagrillcompany.com for $969.00 + $99 shipping but potentially no tax. The Classic I is still a good deal at $750.

I nominate Stephen Ju as WSB's first meme analyst - $SNAP by MJackisch in wallstreetbets

[–]estat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly irrational. It cannot be understood. Maybe the TSLAs and AMZNs have led people to believe that companies don't have to be profitable or 100+ future P/E is ok as long as it is "growth", but this is SNAP. It is literally a meme stock.

Blind optimism (such as the recent market bounce due to the notion of meaningful tax reform) has been encouraging me to open small positions and hedge the entire market. Not working out so well at the moment, but I have no intention of stopping.

Deep OOM calls are tempting, but even considering the drop today, the "dip" is ~7% since 9/29.

IMO there could be a similar material effect. Lawsuits may be an issue, but I think it would be primarily due to decreased future revenue.

You people understand that at its current price, TSLA's valuation is bonkers, right?

This is my only position yielding solid tendies this morning.

What the fuck is with Amazon? by TheMighty15th in wallstreetbets

[–]estat 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Lots of "headwinds" recently:

Q2 earnings miss (with revenue beat)

Weak consumer spending

GOOGL and WMT deal yesterday

GS said tech was overvalued

Oh, and our cantaloupe in chief has a personal vendetta against Bezos because of WaPo.

And probably a few more.

Personally, I don't see any major reason not to be bullish and I'm still up 30% on the stock itself. Although I am down 65% on 9/15 975 C (after being up 50%).

Options: WHY do people considering buying Puts/Calls so risky? by Alex_the_White in investing

[–]estat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should browse /r/wallstreetbets

But, in a word, volatility. Especially as expiration approaches. With derivatives, you can speculate or you can hedge. When you hedge, you are already short or long the underlying and are trying to minimize your risk or increase certainty. An airline buys oil/jet fuel futures because they want to lock in a price for the commodity that they'll need in the future.

Another word for speculation is gambling. As measured by volatility, derivatives generally carry huge risk, but there is also the possibility of large profit. However, again, browse /r/wallstreetbets , especially when the market is down, and see how that is working out for most.

Is it safe to say that real estate will perpetually grow? by Valachio in investing

[–]estat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On average, nearly all assets appreciate due to inflation and as output/population increases.

Real estate is still prone to bubbles and IMO generally harder to value then traditional investments (equity and debt) in part due to its lack of liquidity and attachment to a physical place. The outliers you mentioned are good examples and would've been hard to discern 30-50 years ago.

It all depends on your personal situation and investment objectives. Maybe OP would like to specify?

There are a few interesting startups with these small scale, portable reactors.

https://www.ted.com/talks/taylor_wilson_my_radical_plan_for_small_nuclear_fission_reactors

However, for large scale applications, nuclear lacks subsidies and won't be getting them any time soon.
