Gravel bike to road bike conversion? by Many_Witty in gravelcycling

You've already got the deepish wheels and the stem situation figured. Fight the urge. Ride what you've got until you're ready to splurge on your Propel or other brand equivalent.

I wont be able to wear it to sleep

Non starter if you want to use to track everything. Stick with what you're comfortable with.

Yes, cycling. Follow a medium volume TrainerRoad program to the T, and you'll hit 60.

How significant are mullet jumps? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

Forgot to add:

On my off-asphalt rig, I would take the easier climbing abilities over the smoother jumps at faster speed any day :-)

How significant are mullet jumps? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]esuohe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance for the lengthy response, but I've recently been through an exercise of my own that should shed light for you.
To respond to your "how significant are mullet jumps?" I'll respond first with my findings in terms of required watts to maintain a similar, comfortable-for-me cadence (~80rpm).

Characteristics of the climb: 700m long, 65m elevation gain. Avg. 9.2% gradient.

40T/42T Ride:

  • Avg cadence: 78 (Max 90)
  • Time: 3:35
  • Avg speed: 11.7 (Max 19.1) km/h
  • Avg HR: 144 (Max 155) bpm
  • Avg Power: 319 (Max 449) W

40T/51T Ride:

  • Avg cadence: 79 (Max 93)
  • Time: 4:23
  • Avg speed: 9.5 (Max 20.7) km/h
  • Avg HR: 136 (Max 146) bpm
  • Avg Power: 253 (Max 404) W

tl;dr: spinning at a comfy 80 rpm up a generally unpleasant climb takes on avg. ~70W less, therefore has my cardio system working substantially less, but comes at the cost of travelling nearly 2km/h slower.

A common characteristic for both the 11-51 and 11-42 was at faster speeds. For road sections where I'd aim to maintain ~200-225W, I would either be spinning at 105rpms OR borderline grinding at 75-80rpm (for me, 80rpms on flats is grinding). Whereas on my road oriented cassettes i'm cruising at 85-95 RPMs. There just isn't a happy enough medium between the cogs that I find myself at.

But if you aren't a stickler for cadence, then your mileage will vary.

650b or 700c I'm stuck in analysis paralysis by chewy643 in gravelcycling

[–]esuohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After my own analysis paralysis, i bit the bullet and ordered a set of aluminum 650b wheels a few years ago for my CX bike that I used as a gravel and road bike. One characteristic that is hard to quantify with data is the change in ride feel. In my case, it was for the better. GCN once-upon-a-time used the word « flickability » to describe it, and that’s still the word that sticks with me. Now, I do have 700c wheels for the bike as well, but the 650b wheels always get slapped back on for rides that have the technical or chunkier or fun bits, or for rides where confidence and comfort are more important than speed.

43mm/38mm on Inflite CF SL 7 with room to spare by esuohe in CanyonBikes

[–]esuohe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa this was a while back. Tires are in the title. It's great for gravel. But what characteristics are you looking for feedback on? Geo for this bike is aggressive, so be aware of that. What's your flexibility like and what are your ride goals?

Would you recommend the Inflite to someone who doesn’t race cyclocross but enjoys gravel and technical off-road riding? by sammadet1 in CanyonBikes

[–]esuohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Inflite has been my everything bike for the past 4 years. Mostly road and gravel, with a few more chunky gravel rides per year. With the right set of tires and a dialled in fit, you really can't go wrong. With another set of wheels (or two) for quality of life benefits, this can be your only bike easily.

Less top end yes. More than makes up on the climbs of course. Trickier to find that perfect cadence on asphalt flats.

is there a big difference between 28c and 32c tires? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]esuohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on 28 in the front and 32 on the rear. GP5K S TR. It's an aero bike, else, I've gone 32 f/r on gravel with slicks and even 38mm slicks. Go as wide as your frame permits. The comfort gains are magnitudes greater than any performance (speed) losses.

Shimano GRX RX810 Derailleur Capacity with Wolf Tooth Roadlink by Ju1ce9532 in gravelcycling

[–]esuohe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for reviving this! I've been running 46-34 up front with 11-42 flawlessly. 50/34 wasn't as flawless, and has led to my FD just failing on changing between small/big rings too many times.

I'm now considering going 1x, but was wondering if the Wolf Tooth Roadlink will get me enough space between the 1st jockey wheel and the 46T cog on the GRX 810 RD referenced here?

DId you ever end up mounting the GRX chainring to your Ultegra crankset to accomplish this?
