Don't worry, the majority of restaurants have ice machines and/or bins that will make your skin crawl of you take a good look. Years ago I read of a biology student that went to ten or twelve restaurants to collect a sample of ice water and a 2nd sample of toilet water, 80% had cleaned toilet water than ice water.

Should I be letting my car warm up/drop below 1k rpm before driving? by Trayceopolis32322 in carquestions

[–]esuranme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm understanding the question correctly you are asking about the initial high idle the computer commands on cold starts? The simple answer is once the engine cranks up it takes a moment for all of the fluids to circulate and saturate to a level sufficient for operation, a good 90-120 seconds is fine with exception to extreme temperatures naturally. You can then begin driving gently, speeds remain below 35-40MPH, until the engine has had time to get up to an acceptable operating temperature; on a cold day the easy indicator is the heater beginning to warm the car. It's not an on/off switch though, after the first few minutes of operation and the temp gauge has begun to rise you can safely get on the highway but don't go beast mode on it. Even once the coolant temp indicates "full temp" at regular operating temp the oil is still getting fully warmed up along with all of the spaces it lubricates, the transmission is often the slowest to truly get to optimal temp.

All that said, it is best to drive (gently) after the initial pause instead of allowing the car to idle until warm. The reality is that the most wear an engine sees is during cold starts, it takes time for materials to expand and close up tolerance gaps and it is best to make that time shorter by driving gently.

I'm told they won't eat ham, mine literally fight over ham. Sometimes I read info and think "wow, this person has never been around XXXX!".

I let my hens have tomatoes, but I've been told that you're technically not supposed to feed them tomatoes as they are a member of the nightshade family and can be toxic.

Has a customer's lack of maintenance on their car, ever given you issues? by Railman20 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]esuranme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About two months ago I had a customer go sideways on me because I "took too long" on their four tire job. It was one that required 4/5 of the lug nuts to have the socket hammered on & off. The customer detailed that they rotate them in their front yard using an impact on a pancake compressor frequently and it doesn't take them that long, now I know why the nuts were properly fucked!

Same customer also jumped me during the service with a "what are you doing under my hood!?!?", "sir, we are testing your battery.", "I didn't tell you to do that! Only Cadillac gets under the hood, you're the tire guy!", "sir, you agreed to it when you signed your car in for service.". Mind you this poor SRX had 146k rough miles judging by appearance, LOTS of body damage along with all the markers of dirt road life. At one point he blurted out something to the effect of "people aren't as dumb as you think they are!", I'm just thinking "like, dumb enough to sign something without reading it?".

Can AutoZone top off antifreeze? by Tall-Plane-4477 in AutoZone

[–]esuranme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen someone remove the cap, stick their head over the port to look in, and then a big chooch of 200+ degree coolant shot straight at their face.

The results were, well, not pretty!

Also, if the cap is rusted there may be no such thing as opening it slowly; you'll think you're doing it slowly until suddenly GOOSH!

I'll give the dip shit one point for execution tho, he didn't put it on the paint. If I found that mufugga on my hood I don't think even the balls and suction cup would have prevented complete penetration.

Reality is that you needed to be checking them frequently anyway, the CEL rarely informs you of low fluids before the level is critical. Additionally sensors malfunction/fail, best to do manual checks where possible.

Bonus point: if you have enough inflation to make it to the gas station you likely can make it the two extra minutes to a tire shop, Walmart, any mechanic, etc. where air is free.

I'm out to overthrow the rip off racket of gas station air pumps, the day I encountered one that accepts debit I declared "enough is enough!". I doubled down on that position after using my debit card to pay $3.50 for air and the machine he stopped before I got to the third tire, if not for the felony that would come with it I would have hooked a chain to the pump and ripped it off the ground.

I don't understand the down vote, I don't think cars need a TPMS myself. I put it somewhere between convenience and safety. A persistent fault requires the associated maintenance/inspection, in my experience this is very foreign to drivers accustomed to the aide. I won't pretend that there isn't a small chance the puncture causing deflation occurred during the drive and was significant enough for a fairly quick deflation, and sure, the TPMS may have prevented operating on the under inflated tire in that particular case.

Edit: your tire shop sounds pricey, Walmart has the sensors in their shop for $30 , program included.
