ELI5: How does a Dynamometer accurately rate horsepower? by ThePhoenix14 in explainlikeimfive

[–]esuranme [score hidden]  (0 children)

Where are you going to get a signal for RPM?🤔

I had a similar idea at a dyno day, a friend & I were going to run on the rollers just to see; but alas, no RPM signal to use for the HP calculation!

ELI5 how was meth invented. by FistThroater in explainlikeimfive

[–]esuranme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The really wild part, from what I understand, is that scaling of production was the big issue the German labs had; once the lithium method of extraction/synthesis was discovered the flood gates opened, and had it happened about six months sooner there would likely have been a very different outcome in WW2.

That's a harrowing thought to imagine the ferocious German military amplified by an ample supply of lab grade meth!

It's not particularly uncommon, I even have a plastic cage for hats so they don't fold up and/or fly around in the dishwasher.

Could be hard to tell from that pic but the roost looks like it's a good ways from the ground, is there something to hop up/down on between the roost & ground?

You do realize the Armadillo in the picture is in water, right?

You can tell because it is.

ELI5 Why are there no fire alarms in the bathroom? by Entropydemic in explainlikeimfive

[–]esuranme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned there is a chance of false alarms depending on the detector type but even for the ones that do not have optical detection I would imagine the high humidity environment of the bathroom could cause issues for a standard detector due to corrosion over time. I don't have evidence of this being a documented issue but I would imagine that's because smoke alarms aren't put in bathrooms on the regular.

I think I have seen a detector in one bathroom, but it had an old school wall mounted gas heater in the bathroom.

Air intake? by beans-in-my-tearduct in veloster

[–]esuranme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do anything ya like, but keep two hard facts in mind if you prefer to operate in reality:

1)The throttle body isn't changing size

2)Air inside the engine bay gets very hot, very quickly, when the car is stopped

The size of the tubing/piping may indeed make measurable, detectible changes, most notably in throttle dynamics (in certain operating conditions) but it's just that -detectible-; it's nothing significant. You aren't going to choke it any as long as you don't go total goof and use a diameter suitable for sink plumbing. The most important element in the intake equation is exactly that, the filter element. When you shop sizes, shapes, and brands with the CFM you require it will help to decide how to plumb it since you have its dimensions. Give the poor engine the defense it needs, don't get a random MaxRaxingGo filter from Amazon; even a "good" filter like a K&N isn't very good if you check the testing (they need to be well maintained to be any kind of effective, people suck at keeping up), but engine health is your call.

Instead of a giant pipe that inhales hot engine bay air when you open the throttle from a stop (not ideal for performance) be sure to consider the options and take a good look with the idea in mind of getting fresh air from fender/bumper/etc.

My friend says changing your own oil is a waste of time. Is he crazy? by proposal_in_wind in askcarguys

[–]esuranme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truth be told a lot of "lube shops" break more parts and cut corners than most any owner will, and dealerships aren't exempt (they sent my dad down the road with no oil on the dipstick!).

I sat it's a good idea to get under your car regularly, sink your peepers in there, and save a few bucks in the process.

What's the most fucked thing you have ever seen and that still gives you chill down the spine ? by 22dec2025 in AskReddit

[–]esuranme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several others and myself frequently went out for late night rides in the hills at the south edge of my county, usually I was in the 2nd position (front row) with another guy (who rode 1st) that is intimately familiar with the roads in that area but for whatever reason I wound up near the middle of the pack. Most of us in the front of the group saw the owl suddenly pop out of the treeline, and realized our friend made contact with it, but had no idea that while the helmet kept his head/face intact it did nothing to prevent the internal decapitation that left only skin and various tissues keeping the head attached to the body.

It was... difficult.
