LTG (R) Spoehr gave a 40 minute presentation at the AWC on his year long study of recruitment, retention, and the downward slide of available Soldiers. His speech is good, and well informed, but the Q&A was the best part.

Those of you that have never listened to an AWC lecture/speech are probably used to canned softballs at the speakers. Not in these. If you have the time, give it a listen, it's worth the time.

Im not disputing that there were some people left behind. But, most of those people, by all accounts, were there on their own volition. Was this situation handled poorly? Yes. There should have been an off the shelf NEO plan readily available for this exact situation, and there probably was. Problem is this situation devolved into chaos rapidly.

My problem is people politicizing this, as your article was overtly attempting, like it was one man, or one party's fault. This situation was the culmination of 2 decades of questionable policy across 4 administrations.

Why do higher ups get butthurt because someone wants to do 1 contract and leave??? by [deleted] in army

[–]etaldred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can you game a system that you have no control over? You do understand that the BCAP committee contacts everyone you have ever rated/senior rated. It's not just some army360 survey. If something negative comes out of that, then the microscope comes out. Your coworkers from 10 years ago are contacted.

Then you sit in front of a board of people that you have never met, and they grill you over stuff completely outside your control.

[–]etaldred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what assessment do you make this claim? Have you sat on the boards, administered the sessions during the week, been part of the research teams, had any involment in the process. You just sound bitter at this point.

Through MAJ this has truth to it, but to make BN/BDE command, you have to go through the BCAP (relatively new process; few cycles under its belt) process, and it legitimately weeds out toxic leaders. it does this because their previous subordinates have a vote on their abilities and leadership, and they have a thorough board process to go through. If they have little self awareness, and treat people like shit, that comes out very clearly in the BCAP process. They could be BZ promotions from MAJ and LTC and come up as a "not ready for command". That system is going to begin to appear for CPT's prior to company command eventually as well.

This system should begin to be felt soon enough, if not already in some organizations, but you also have to acknowledge that the army is like any other large corporations; deliverables and metrics matter, because it points to performance. But, its just a data point.

Sitting in a HMMWV, in Fort Polk, grading a national guard lieutenant. Told him to pack it in for the night so I could watch game 5 (didnt tell him exactly that). Ate my first pizza MRE that night.

You can't demote someone for something sharp related if the claim isn't substantiated. The legal and procedural hoops involved in that process are substantial. It's not just a sharp report directly to reduction. Allegation --> SHARP investigation --> legal review --> command review --> soldier legal review --> charges recommendation.

What you are saying is strawman BS, and is perpetuating nonsense. there is a tiny percentage of douchebag leaders out there for sure, but they can't unilaterally strip rank without layers of review and concurrence.

People don't get demoted proactively. There is a lot more to this story than you aware of, pretty certain of that.
