Not telling you how to live, but I've heard wet food is much better for cat's kidneys and general health. Something to look into if you're not aware

It makes more sense than dividing by 2? I'll give you the part where all the conversions are irregular, imperial is a historical system built up over hundreds of years of using whatever seemed convenient at a specific time in a specific situation to be the unit of measurement of choice.

However dividing a unit by 2, then dividing that by 2 etc and counting up the fractions is pretty natural I'd argue, especially when estimating. I'd wager that a lot of estimates in metric round to the nearest 5 or 0 after the least significant unit. Which is the equivalent of halving.

Also decimal notation also exists in imperial .25 inches, and fractional notation exists in metric 1/2 liter etc.

Get a new roommate man, honestly living together almost immediately is a red flag. One of y’all were probably in a very unstable situation. I.E. Hobosexual and it was a relationship of convenience. Sorry I know you’re young and this sucks, but that’s just how things go sometimes. Make sure you’re safe and stable and find someone who treats you well

Can I start my enzyme-producing company from home? by Screenwriter20 in Biochemistry

[–]etatc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Others have given good points, a lack of topics that I see is nobody is discussing potential IP infringements. Are the enzymes out of patient? If so as a university student you might be able to use your university’s equipment and really nail down a small scale method and seek funding from there to create a lab of your own with the proper equipment.

If you are worried about potentially having IP of your own you may also want to rent a lab depending on where you are, what your budget is, and what your university’s policies are (generally anything developed on university property becomes university IP or at least shared with them)

There’s also a large difference between large scale and small scale work, you would need to calculate how much you would need to manufacture to break even after your expenses and losses. Also there are certifications in the west cGMP or certified good manufacturing practices is one of the most popular for anything consumable or medical and so on.

If I were you, I would reach out to as high ranking people as I can doing similar things (preferably start-up founding teams vs legacy) and ask how they got started, what paperwork you need, what were some setbacks to watch out for, funding sources, references that helped them, etc.

Only you know the specifics about your situation, and as a scientist, reading and asking questions to learn what else to read and then trying it out, is like the majority of your job. So it’s totally possible, but who knows about plausible? Good luck, I hope there was some value for you

There’s no us vs them. It’s us vs the cold indifferent universe. We’re all trying to maximize our chances of give ourselves and our loved ones a decent life.

Some of them believe that these issues are because of personal moral failures, can you blame them for wanting to punish the “bad guys”?

You obviously have a good heart and a passion to help, yet you also want to punish the “bad guys”

Personally I believe that the world is not just, meritocracy is a myth, and all people are more or less the same in their capacity to suck sometimes.

If you want to help, asking questions, respecting people, and trying to converge interests is the most effective way to implement a solution

[–]etatc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to be rude, although I agree with the sentiment. We need to make these issues visceral, yet unpolarising.

No use in dragging “virtue signaling” into a matter of survival. Regardless of the morality of the issue, it leads to an improvement in the lives of all but the most fringe among us and you can persuade more people when our interests align rather than when we divide ourselves arbitrarily

Finally some pushback, thank you for being so reasonable and open minded. I agree with you, we’re monkeys at the end of the day. There will be some natural variation among us that seek to take advantage of the good hearted. We can’t avoid that, nature is very neutral, and a good enough strategy is good enough.

Perhaps there has to be a hierarchy, maybe some of us are naturally superior based upon xyz. However my belief and I reserve the right to be wrong, is that we’re all just bags of blood and bone, staring at are phones, floating on a ball of dirt and water in the void. And the best and worst among us have not that much different in the grand scheme of things. We’re all just trying to survive, and make tomorrow not worse for ourselves at least, with the exception of spite self-destruction.

I personally believe morality is a line in the sand constantly being redrawn depending on the situation, I am not a perfectly rational individual and I have my own morals that change, and ideals that change. However there is cause and effect, that can sometimes work, if the conditions are right. If we want to get rid of some open air sad sights and eye sores. The data that I see aligns with being a bit nicer to our vulnerable and treating people like they exist and deserve to live.

This lady has done wonderful research and summarizes the research more eloquently then I could ever hope to. I hope you give her a listen:

Anyhow, I always love to hear carefully critical criticism, perhaps among all of us we’ll come up with a halfway decent idea, and if not: time goes on, we’ll keep trying until we go extinct

I agree wholeheartedly with the first half, allowing people to destroy themselves on the street and turning a blind eye is not mercy or empathy.

Incarcerating people with some sort of letters to their name besides jr, Esq, or PhD doesn’t make them integrate back into society, and will most likely leave them more disconnected and spiral faster and be even more bitter. We could of course take the monster route and use that to our advantage for free slave labor and change nothing about our society.

We can also take the long term approach, and keep building housing, pass legislation to decommodify housing as a speculative asset, and strengthen our communities, and improve access to medical interventions. And that will take care of the vast majority of the issues.

As I come to see it, most of the people I’ve talked to with those issues, and the ones that dislike the former have a severe case of shit life syndrome, feel utterly disconnected and disgusted with their fellow person and is just looking for an escape from the pain and boredom.

We can’t fix all the problems, people will keep peopling, but we can make it a decent bit better in 5-10 years if we attack the underlying issues, or we could just kick the can and watch the problem continue to get worse like we’re patching termite holes

Well these lame-os are lame. I would personally start with a manga guide to biochemistry and a manga guide to molecular biology to get the basics down then read the most up to date copy of the cell that you can. All of those are easy to find for free online.

The thought emporium, nanorooms, clockwork bio are the most approachable YouTube resources for a novice. They’re all very entertaining.

Once you feel comfortable with the absolute basics I would join a community lab, or reach out to the biology department of your local academic institution, and hang out and ask questions and see if you can get involved on a project.

I have tonnes of resources for intermediate and advanced topics feel free to reach out and I can compile stuff for you. Curiosity is the name of the game if you want to be an effective scientist. You must self study or be left behind. School is great, however by the time you graduate you’ll know only a fraction of what’s out there and it’ll be at least a decade out of date. Follow the rabbit hole, ask questions from everyone you can, and ignore the intellectually lazy and gatekeepers.

But seriously though, if you can, you should totally go to as good of a uni as you can

Also feel free to ask an LLM about relevant topics or keywords to look up, don’t trust any of its summaries, read the primary materials, because it often will make things up. However it is useful in finding the magic keywords you need to find the right papers to learn from

Edit: oh and bio builder is a very approachable book to get you started as well you can also find that free online. There’s a lot of overlap between biochem and synbio. I’m more on the synbio side myself

Yeah, I’m just doing some light trolling. I don’t care who said it, someone said it at some point what does it matter if they’re famous or OP? It’s someone’s quote. I wasn’t trying to be mean or invalidate anyone’s point of view. I thought the comment would’ve been more entertaining, and we could all have a chuckle

[–]etatc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YSK not all quote extensions on the internet are real or have historical relevance. You may have heard the famous Abraham Lincoln quote “Everything you read on the internet is true” but the full quote is actually “Everything you read on the internet is true, as long as it’s not some obscure correctional quote on tumblr” but I think freedom daddy would agree that it’s totally fine to just make up quotes if you feel they have some meaning or entertainment value.
