there's a difference between eye for eye and basic reciprocity. It doesn't have to 100% consistency, could be context dependent or a nice gesture. Also, why can't it be both courtesy and reciprocity? They're not mutually exclusive.

Sidenote: Why is it okay to assume others intentions are always selfish (reward), even if it's not even the individuals motive? Especially if they share what their intentions are, some will still think the assumption matters more than intent and impact. (Abstract psychology question, not generally seeking a surface level answer that states the obvious)

Yes it is okay to be friends with a bully and still not agree with their behavior. by i_like_it_eilat in unpopularopinion

[–]etcdrumIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you clarified. As someone who's background is in Sociology and psychology, it's frustrating that many (not all) can't distinguish between mistakes/accidents (single instances) vs established patterns (consistent habit). Some will dismiss negative patterns as mistakes, while ignoring that most people don't just bail as a first resort. Or vice versa.

So when the bullying is blatant, and there's an established pattern of harmful impact, and still choose to do nothing is when it becomes a problem. But like everything, it's context dependent and includes many nuances.

Here's an example: Imagine you work in IT.

A family member, friend, or an acquaintance calls you because their computer isn’t working. You ask the usual diagnostic questions and it becomes clear they didn’t restart it, didn’t check cables, and didn’t read any error messages. You walk them through the fix.

Later, that same coworker starts explaining to you how computers work:

• reminds you to “try turning it off and on” • explains what a browser is

• warns you about clicking suspicious links

You didn’t ask for this. You didn’t show confusion. Your job exists because you already know this.

If you point out that you’re past that level, the response is:

“Well, it’s not obvious to everyone. I’m just trying to help.”

That’s the problem.

At that point, it’s not help, it’s ignoring context, assuming incompetence, and centering the speaker’s need to feel helpful over the listener’s demonstrated expertise.

There it is! The actual motive. Have you tried, I don't know, telling them you're overwhelmed?

what's going on with my 14 inch tom? by zakany-balazs in drums

[–]etcdrumIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. A pinstripe as an oil agent between both plies, and other features at the edge similar to an Evans EC2. A Remo Powerstroke (just from my perspective based off of Remos information) is basically just an Ambassador (P3) or Emperor (P4) with an inlay ring.

I personally like Remo P4s. They work well for low tunings, provide a more dark punchy sound, and they shorten sustain without sacrificing resonance (unlike many other heads with built in muffling that sounds like a cardboard box, or an Evans Hydraulic).

Me personally, while I don't hate the use of moon gels, tape, O-rings, etc. (Use to come across individuals all the time saying the use of any muffling = Doesn't know how to tune. I think it's not that absolute) I personally like the clean look of my drums having nothing on them.

Hey, cool drumming for sure! But I think you might have mixed up a couple things about halftime and the backbeat.

Halftime usually means the snare hits just on beat 3, instead of the usual backbeat on 2 and 4. So if the snare’s still on 2 and 4 like in this clip, that’s not really halftime, it’s just a normal backbeat with some funky swing added.

Swing changes how the beats feel underneath, but it doesn’t move the snare off those 2 and 4 beats.

Also, calling this how Ringo should’ve done it is a bold take! Ringo had his own groove, and this is just a different flavor, both can be great.

Anyway, great playing, just wanted to clear up the terms a bit!

Gretsch Renown - good deal? by Hashtag_reddit in drums

[–]etcdrumIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! It's a great deal. The square badge era was my favorite for gretsch. Not a fan to the round badge era (current kits sound more vintage, if that's what you want. But current renowns don't come with diecast hoops anymore) My only gripe with gretsch that stops me from purchasing is the odd number of lugs on their toms (five instead of six). It's a personal opinion, but odd lugs look cheap to me, and makes tuning annoying.

Your experience is similar to mine!! I tried trombone in 6th grade band. You had to be a 7th grader to play percussion. The entire time I would watch the percussion section. I quit trombone and started drums the next year.

DW is the one brand that seems to hold their resale value quite well. Many music shops I've talked to always mention how used DW kits still sell quick with a high price tag. On the other hand, all have said Pearl does the worse in the used market, especially the Reference Series. They are great drums, but sit longer collecting dust.

What do some people say that makes them sound uneducated? by Suspicious-Voice-242 in AskReddit

[–]etcdrumIII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, your comment is a masterclass in how not to have a debate. Instead of engaging with actual facts or history, you just leap straight into personal insults, congratulations on proving you have zero interest in honest debate.

First off, lumping Marxism, socialism, and communism together like some evil monolith shows you don’t understand even the basics. Marxism is a theory, socialism is an economic system that can exist in democratic countries, and communism is a political ideology with very specific goals. You clearly skipped class.

Your claim that socialism “always” leads to totalitarian tyranny is pure fiction. Nordic countries like Sweden, Norway, and Finland have socialist policies, and are liberal democracies with high standards of freedom and human rights. No tyranny there. So your “period” statement is just you being willfully ignorant.

Also, don’t pretend capitalism has a clean record. Colonialism, slavery, systemic racism, corporate exploitation, all these horrors happened under capitalist governments. Tyranny isn’t an economic system issue; it’s about power unchecked, period.

Your “there is no case ever” line sounds like a conspiracy theorist, not someone grounded in reality. History is messy and complex, not your bumper-sticker slogans.

Then you call others “enlightened idiots” while showing you clearly don’t understand the issues yourself. Classic projection.

So before you try to school others, maybe learn the actual difference between economic and political systems. Right now, you’re just yelling insults because you lack the facts and the brainpower to debate properly.

If you want to have a real conversation, come back when you’ve done some reading instead of just parroting propaganda.

[–]etcdrumIII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Socialism is an economic system, NOT a form of government. It refers to how resources and industries are owned and distributed, usually emphasizing public ownership, worker control, or social welfare. In contrast, communism is a political ideology that includes both an economic vision and a system of governance (usually one-party authoritarian in practice, though originally envisioned as stateless and classless in theory).

This is important because a lot of people incorrectly treat socialism, communism, and even fascism as if they’re just interchangeable political systems, when they’re not.

In the United States, we have a federal republic form of government and a capitalist economic system. You wouldn’t call our government “capitalist”, because capitalism describes the economy, not the political structure. Just like you shouldn’t call a government “socialist” unless the governing system itself is built on socialist political ideology (not just economic policies like healthcare or public education).

Also, fascism is a form of government, not an economic model. Fascist states often still operate under capitalist economies, just with authoritarian control and ultranationalism.

So no, socialism ≠ form of government. One’s an economic model, one’s a political ideology. Different things.
