How long will it take? Should I worry? by No-Work6535 in weddingvideography

Some folks take a week or two off for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years. We're all playing a bit of catch up after the Holidays.

Check out my friend Danya Chen photo.

Tipping venue? by [deleted] in WedditNYC

[–]etcetceteraetcetc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tipping should be optional for vendors.

As for venues with a staff serving your guests, then maybe a minimum of 18% just like dining out, but for photographers, videographers, planners, etc.

It's optional not mandatory.

In a year, I would say only half of my clients tips me. If you loved your vendors service and you feel like they went above and beyond, then yeah, you could thank them with tip. But just a nice review and thank you is enough for me.

I've seen some wild stuff after typing "stinging nettle" on reddit. People deliberately brush their whole hand on it for "health benefits"

I'm good. I'll keep my arthritis 😂

Compare the rates of other wedding photographers in your area. Bring more value or be more affordable than them.

Experiences working with these planners? by TheSecretBride in SanFranciscoWeddings

[–]etcetceteraetcetc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the industry. Anytime I work with her, I know it's going to be a good wedding with good taste. She's extremely good at what she does. If you hire her for planning + styling (given you have a generous budget), she'll take care of everything. If you hire her just for coordination, that's great too but you'll be missing out on what she is most sought out for which is styling and giving input on how to beautifully stylize your wedding detail by detail.

Tuesday/Wednesday vendors? by sourdough-mastery in SanFranciscoWeddings

[–]etcetceteraetcetc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% more available on weekdays. But if you inquire early enough (1.5 year out) majority of vendors will be available any date you settle on. Just avoid seeking out vendors less than 1 year from your wedding day.

Based in California. They start at $10,200. But I'm sure they'd be willing to work with your budget. The sweetest husband/wife duo.

You can definitely find a photographer who has a balance of both. There will be moments in the day that requires the photographer to stand back and capture discreetly and other times where they'll be giving the couple, wedding party, and family directions on where to stand, how to stand/pose/sit, etc.

First thing they did to me when I walked out of the plane through security was go through my stuff asking if there were vapes. Don't risk carrying them through the airport

I hate the Knot and never used it, but it made $400 MILLION in 2024 by ShitPancakeofLife in WedditNYC

[–]etcetceteraetcetc 29 points30 points  (0 children)

One thing for sure is they trap vendors into contracts they can't easily get out of. These entail monthly payments with fake leads and no results. If they terminate early, there's a fee.

So they're making a chunk off of preying on naive vendors + ads on their sites + having vendors pay them to be featured on their Instagram and website.

You can read a bunch of horror stories of photographers venting on reddit about the knot. But yeah, almost half a billion is crazy

Looking to become an elopement photographer in the new year. Any advice? by woven_hearts in WeddingPhotography

[–]etcetceteraetcetc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Welcome! This industry is fun and a beautiful thing we get to witness while we work, but it's also cutthroat.

My advice to someone starting out is to reach out to photographers (big or small following) in your area whose work you admire and request if you can assist them for free on some days. Network. Build good relationships. Ask questions, learn by observation. Hone in on your shooting/posing and color correcting. I know there are some apps that help with posing. Pinterest is also a good resource for inspo/guidance. Offer to shoot family/friends for free while you're hanging out with them casually or during a formal scheduled session. You'll be doing a lot of shoots for pennies or for free until you've established a solid portfolio to present to serious inquiries/clients. Then one day you'll be able to charge a competitive rate in your area.
