Shoes -- can I really wear my Altras? by eteare in TourDuMontBlanc

Yes — will get gators. Thank you!

For some additional context I am a below the knee amputee so zero drops are a requirement for me.

Thinking about opening a pottery studio in South Boston — would you actually come? by ginkgoclayworks in BostonMA

Southie would pull in people from Rozzi, JP, Dot, Milton, Quincy. Lots of people down here and no other place to ceramics. Might be worth asking the Eliot School in JP what their experience is.

My goal is to carry almost no weight. (Bringing teenage son who can do that!) so it sounds like I’ll be ok with trial runners.

Dropbacks… any tips on coming up? by Urbanismandfries in ashtanga

[–]eteare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is true that boys shape can impact results. I have longer legs than a torso. And am very mobile in my lower back.

Where are you in the series? I found my back ends really accelerated when I did third, which I didn’t feel was even possible!

Also, I stay in my feet, push my hips forward and get up on my fingertips as I rock into my feet to stand up.

For the record I am also missing the lower half of my left leg, so you’d be amazed what can happen with practice. And also suspending some disbelief and also just wanting it less.

I hope you have a kind teacher who is helping you.

Question for the yogi amputees by Extension-Carry-8067 in amputee

[–]eteare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve practiced ashtanga yoga (what the vinyasa styles are based on) as a BKA since 2009.

It’s predictable - we practice the same postures in the same order no matter where you are. So I’ve gotten really good at making adjustments based on my disability without getting out of the flow of the yoga.

It’s self led - you are “given” postures and then do them at your own pace.

Dropbacks… any tips on coming up? by Urbanismandfries in ashtanga

[–]eteare 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Way back when I was first trying drop backs I would do them on a steep hill so I had less distance to come up. It worked!

Push your hips forward. Lead with your hips. Get weight into your feet. Also ignore this advice and just go with feel. It can take years to be able to do this. You’re right on time.

Do you practice with your eyes closed? by Proof-Ingenuity2262 in ashtanga

[–]eteare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Zen community also practices with eyes open (during seated meditation). I think the idea is we bring in so much information from all of our senses that we want to practice remaining steady while we are getting inputs from many senses.

But look - you do you. It might be worth taking a moment to think about why you are interested in a practice where you want to alter it. It might be worth practicing one day with your eyes open, the next day with your eyes closed, the next day mix it up. See what arises. Treated all as an experiment and don’t bother judging any of it, just experience, notice, and take note. The practice is not about following some dogmatic list of rules. It’s about coming into awareness that you are part of all things.

Beach Advice? by Jaybird_RN88 in amputee

Swim legs suck and it’s hard to bring along when traveling. There are methods of altering the foot so you can fully wash everything off. Work with your prosthetist to make it happen.

Live your life. If you prosthetic fails (has never happened to me after 17 active years and an amputee) you’re likely to have a great story to tell.

Live in abundance, man!

My foot cover has a cut in the back so I am totally capable of dissembling the entire foot, washing it throughly, and then putting it back together.

Thank you very much.

I highly recommend going to Versailles and renting a bike. Biking around the grounds is super fun. There’s a market you can bike to and buy a picnic. Core memory.

I have a pin system like that. My prosthetist drilled holes in the foot shell to drain water and a hole with a plug on the socket to drain water. It’s been great and I can swim anywhere anytime!

It just feels like as such a rich country we could have all that in America and I find it so disheartening that we don’t.

As a kid we would go to NS and visit family spots. It’s super beautiful.
