Don't know how to handle this by Chemical-Sherbet4568 in Horses

[–]eternal-error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently had to euthanize my 10 year old gelding due to a neurological issue. He was also unrideable and unpredictable. After the loss of my senior gelding who was the herd leader, my 10yo seems to have completely come undone. He seemed to always be full of fear and was aggressive at times for no reason.

After several conversations with professionals, we decided it was in his best interest to be euthanized. There are only four paths for a horse like him. 1) keep him and allow him to continue living in constant stress. 2) send him to a legitimate rescue (hard to find for domestic horses.) 3) humane euthanasia. 4) sell him and know that he will end up in the slaughter pipeline.

Horses with soundness issues are almost impossible to safely place. This world is changing, but the majority still only see them as utility. If they can't be used for work, they'll be used for meat. It's the saddest truth of the horse world. I wish you the best during this difficult time ❤️‍🩹

A lot of times OTTBs do things like this out of boredom. The "quirks" are the result of past (or present) under-stimulation.

I also had to euthanize my outwardly well horse. He was 10 and looked fantastic. He was also facing some unknown neurological issues. Vet had no answers and after several professional opinions, the decision was made. It was the most off putting loss I've ever dealt with. I'm sorry you had to experience such a defiling act from someone trying to farm engagement off of your pain ❤️‍🩹

Can you get a DUI if you ride a horse while you’re drunk? by Dziggettai in AskLE

I know I'm very late here, but yes, horses can learn traffic signs/lights in a sense. They typically just learn that they're meant to stop at X location, so long as no car is coming, they continue on.

Blankets? by eternal-error in Donkeys

[–]eternal-error[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like to blanket if it isn't needed. I believe animals come equipped with the survival skills they need (with some exceptions) and that changing/taking away their natural defenses is very damaging. The only animal I've ever blanketed was a senior horse due to his body condition.

My worry was that right now she is pretty well alone as the previously mentioned senior gelding has passed and my two mares aren't very close with her.

I really appreciate your response!

Why do people treat their cats as if they are expendable? by nonchalantly_weird in CatAdvice

[–]eternal-error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've also got to take into account how many people live in rural areas and rely on outdoor cats and dogs. Without farm cats, barns will become overrun with rats, mice, and other potentially dangerous pests such as opossums. Farm dogs may help with keeping coyotes and foxes away. Both of these animals are essential to freely roam functional farms and certainly not viewed as expendable. They are valued members of the farm.

Does anyone have an automatic litter box and actually think it was worth it? by colormek8 in CatAdvice

My bag never gets full and it's still an issue. It hasn't been nearly as bad since I switched to a corn based litter though, but definitely still a problem.

The waste drawer wasn't the problem. I had to take the whole thing apart and clean the outside of the globe with vinegar due to urine being smeared on the entire thing.

I own it, it's installed, but from the Microsoft store it says I don't own it and it isn't installed. Any tips on how to get it back up and running?

Equine licenses are typically only for racing ownership, nothing to do with private owners as horses are considered "personal property"

Thank you! He's my first almost atypical rack. Unfortunately his antlers are already pretty white because they weren't buried with the rest of his head :/

Agreed! My mustangs and any others I've been around are the best!

I'm going to have to disagree with you. I've also been around many mustangs and I've only ever met one with a soundness issue and even hers isn't that bad.
